Mariners option Jakubauskas to Triple-A

CLEVELAND (AP)—The Seattle Mariners optioned right-hander Chris Jakubauskas(notes) to Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday and purchased the contract of righty Randy Messenger(notes) from their top minor league club.

Jakubauskas has been bothered by soreness in his right shoulder, leaving the Mariners short a reliever.

“He’s feeling a lot better, but it would be a couple of days until he pitches in a game,” Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu said. “We don’t want to take that chance right now to be short-handed.”

Jakubauskas was 6-7 with a 5.28 ERA in 32 games, including eight starts. Wakamatsu said Jakubauskas will return to Seattle with the team after Sunday’s game, throw in the bullpen Monday and then report to Tacoma.

“He’ll get a game or two in and we’re looking to bring him right back up,” Wakamatsu said.

Messenger has spent the season at Tacoma, where he recorded 25 saves in 52 appearances. He was 0-2 with a 2.86 ERA.

“Randy’s obviously deserving,” Wakamatsu said. “We need a chance to take a look at him. We’ll see how he fits with the rest of the guys in the bullpen. We’re happy to bring him up at this point.”

Messenger has pitched in the majors in parts of five seasons, compiling a 4-11 record and a 4.90 ERA with one save in 161 appearances, all in relief.

Wakamatsu said he’d like to use Messenger in the seventh or eighth inning.

To make room for Messenger on the 40-man roster Saturday, the Mariners released minor league right-hander Luis Pena.

I honestly can't believe Silva has been as terrible as he has, he started out decently enough, but ever since May 2008 yikes.

Meaning this has essentially become Bavasi doing his best Woody Woodward impression: follow up one bad move with another, but make it look like a bigtime move to appease all the casuals that Armstrong/Lincoln have stupidly been pandering to for years.

Dump Silva!!! He's a complete waste of a pitcher! Dump Batista while they're at it! This team will never prosper until they shed these pathetic players/contracts from the Bavasi era.

I honestly can't believe someone's trying to make an argument for "Boom Boom" being a solution to anything. BTW, he's still barely on pace to get more ABs than he was in his most active years with the M's (2006-07), meaning I wouldn't bet the farm on that .997 OPS holding up (esp since it pulls his career OPS up to a whopping .660)

"Willie Bloomquist(my favorite mariner after Edgar left) batting average .378, Ibanez .351 8 home runs 3rd in BA and 4th in HR, Jose Guillen .306, and yet here we sit this year with an anemic offense..... "

Yes because the extra half a run we scored (which was still just 7th in the league) when we had those three guys two years ago just made all the difference............................

Come to think of it, didn't Bavasi sign all those guys? You want him back too?

OK so we needed another pitcher and I am happy we had one available....on another note lets see how ex-mariners we refused to sign are doing this year...Willie Bloomquist(my favorite mariner after Edgar left) batting average .378, Ibanez .351 8 home runs 3rd in BA and 4th in HR, Jose Guillen .306, and yet here we sit this year with an anemic offense.....
