Suzuki sets mark with 9th straight 200-hit season

  • Print

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP)—Ichiro Suzuki(notes) has become the first player in major league history with at least 200 hits in nine straight seasons.

The Seattle Mariners’ right fielder set the mark with an infield single in the second inning of the nightcap of doubleheader against the Texas Rangers. In his second at-bat of the game, Suzuki beat out a slow roller to shortstop Elvis Andrus(notes) to break a tie with Willie Keeler, who did it for eight consecutive seasons (1894-1901).

Suzuki received a standing ovation from the sparse crowd, stepping off first base and doffing his batting helmet to thank the fans.

In the first game, Suzuki went 1 for 4 with an RBI double into the left-field corner in the third to come within one of the record.

i disagree #6 the japs still have the real home run king half our players cheated to get there ichiro deserves the hall of fame it dosent matter where you come from if you have talent if daffy duck could hit 4,000 hits id hire him.... ichiro dosent help the team get to the playoffs the rest of the team has to help itself get there it isnt a one man show with 200 hits hes done more than his part to help, hes done double most players barely get to 100 hits... hes already doubled what the others have done maybe seattle should get some real players around ichiro than theyd have a real team... its the management and salary at fault look at what seattle gave away hall of famers like randy johnson #5 ken griffey and # 10 arod... they just cant aford to keep good players thats why there an average team every year not everyone has the yankees bank account get real.... besides its team effort not just one guy... no quarterback makes a football team win either its team efort baseball or football..

He'll be 36 in October and has 2005 hits in MLB... is it possible he could get 3,000 in the USA after his excellent career in Japan?

an amazing record for modern baseball. he is living proof that ty cobb, rogers hornsby, sisler, all those old guys,\ that nobody really respects, could kick butt today. he toys with a league where he is the smallest person with zero power. ty cobb would eat up today's game i'll bet.

i wouldn't say ichiro is at all part of the group of all time hitters like ted wlliams. let's not get crazy. 20% of his hits are just like the slow roller to shortstop that set the record. a hit is a hit but he is the king of infield hits, afterall.
