Mariners: Griffey ‘ripped,’ ready for camp

  • Print

SEATTLE (AP)—Ken Griffey Jr.(notes) is “ripped” and ready to go for spring training.

Baseball’s active home run leader had his second arthroscopic knee surgery in 12 months in October, to remove a bone spur. And Seattle Mariners trainer Rick Griffin says Griffey is “better now than he was at any time last year.”

Griffin spent a few days with Griffey at his home in Florida this winter. The trainer said Thursday the slugger who turned 40 on Nov. 21 has lost about 7 pounds.

Griffey’s even bragging about his new physique.

“He told our general manager that he’s going to be ripped. We’ll see,” Griffin said, smiling three weeks before the Mariners begin spring training.

“He knows he has to lose weight. And he has,” Griffin said.

Griffey hit .214 last season in his return to Seattle, with 19 homers and 57 RBIs in 117 games. He was a designated hitter for all but the first weeks of the season.

The man with 630 career home runs had his knee drained repeatedly in 2009, and often walked stiffly around the clubhouse with a bulbous ice pack wrapped around his leg.

Yet he still produced thrilling, late-game home runs, reminders of what made the 13-time All-Star a Seattle icon from 1989-99, beginning as a grinning Mariners teenager.

“A lot of people don’t realize, not being in the clubhouse every day, how bad his knee was last year,” Seattle manager Don Wakamatsu said.

He has Griffey penciled in as his designated hitter. Wakamatsu, who led Seattle’s turnaround from 101 losses to an 85-77 record last season, said Thursday at the team’s annual pre-spring training luncheon that the Mariners will again slowly work the 1997 AL MVP into everyday shape.

“When he can play, he’s going to be in there,” Wakamatsu said.

Griffey is Seattle’s clubhouse leader and the key to maintaining the environment of trust Wakamatsu created last year in his first season with the Mariners.

But just as Seattle is expecting more out of its rising team, its manager expects more out of Griffey now that he’s healthy.

“We’re expecting production,” Wakamatsu said.

i used to buy ken griffey jr. candy bars in1989...... if he wants to be in tip top shape he should do some of ichiro's stretches, and not swing for the fences. hit for bases and the homers will come. you can't be a one demensional hitter

junior makes aroid and all the roids look stupid he didnt have to cheat to get 630 homers he got away from a-roid so he could stay away from the roids im sure a-roid was passing them around to every player stupid enough to take roids i think a-roid should be banned from baseball he admitted using them to try and make himself look good but it would have come out sooner or later thats why he admitted it if not for the report he would have kept his mouth shut and still been using them, a-roid cant carry griffs jock strap

Jr is the man no doubt. say what you want about Bonds and A-Roid, they can't see Jr cuz offense aside he was possibly the greatest defensive CF of all time as well. Jr played BOTH sides of the ball for years. and he's a complete class act for going "home" to Cinci for way less than he would've gotten anywhere else at the time. too bad the Reds fleeced him and never put anyone else around him

hey two face! Get some facts! JR could have picked about 50 mil more to stay in Seattle, however he wanted to go home so his mom, pop, grandma could watch him play and his kids could spend time with their grandparents. He was never about money like A-ROID and other greedy ones who broke the bank of some teams. He played the game as it should be played, was a roll model for so many kids and many older fans. To us and most of the baseball world he will always be one of the greatest players ever, for just what he ment to the game. he makes it fun again for any team he plays on, he's honest and when and if you get a chance to talk to him he makes you feel you are an long lost friend. The Mariners will never forget what he did before or what he brought to the club house last year and will bring this year. If anyone can turn Bradley into a team player JR will do it.there will be no cancer in the clubhouse or on the field unless they bring Bedard back. We don't need a 75 pitch count pitcher on the team unless he works out of the bullpen. I hope to see Jr on the coaching staff down the road.

proof; you need to go no further than Bond's testimony before the grand jury in the BALCO hearings; in this testimony, Bonds admitted he took the CLEAR, but didn't know he took it at the time. Where have you been?

remember the "I thought it was plaxseed oil" quote

As a lifelong reds fan i wish jr. would have been healthy in cincy. But it is nice to see him still playing. He is the best i ever saw his first 11 years in seattle. But if it were to come out today that he was also using roids i would not be surprised. It does seem everyone one was, some more than others. For the record to you novice fans Barry Bonds Was a HOF player before the roids. And should be a first ballot Inductee. When bonds came to camp in 99 the change in his body was amazing ,along with Brady Anderson, Brett Boone, Luis Gonzalez among others. I knew then what i was already was thinking. Bud Selig and the owners all knew what was going. The press that covers the game like a fine tooth comb all knew it. And we the baseball fan all knew they were on the juice. . ( UNLESS YOU LIVED UNDER A ROCK! ) So take a look in the mirror and convince yourself to throw all these players under the bus. Your guilty too!

Everyone on here who says that there is no proof that Bonds hasnt roided up probably believed Mcgwire hadnt either! I used to love Bonds. He was a great baseball player. Steroids dont make a good baseball player, just cause you roid doesnt mean you are going to hit homeruns it still takes supreme talent. But as far as I am concerned the roids padded his stats, kept him really strong, and helped his muscles recover faster all gave him unfair advantage over legit non cheating players, like GRIFFEY!! Go JR! Anybody have any early 90's Bonds baseball cards? Compare those to him now! Anyways damnit why are we talking about Bonds LOL Go JR!! Only player in HISTORY and will likely remain that way to hit back to back HR's with his dad!

Junior has always been a supremely class act. Some other comments alluded to the fact that he should be compared to Ruth, Mays, and Aaron. I think that is absolutely correct. There is no way anyone should compare him to Palmeiro, Bonds, or Sosa. Junior has always given 100% and and has NATURAL ability.

He was an all around player with oustanding numbers. Hall of Famer in My Book. You all need to Get over the 2002 through 2005 years.... Everybody was Juicing!!!EVERYBODY!!!!

I am so freaking sick of all you idiots saying that Bonds cheated by using steriods. There has never been any proof, trust me when I say this; if there was some proof out there the U.S. Senate would have found it. They are the freaking Government, they can find anything on anyone. Why havent they found any proof of a failed drug test for Mr. Bonds? Why hasn't his name been released from that "list" that is out there? Everyone hates the guy because he broke the most coveted record in all of sports; The All-time home run record!!! The fact of the matter is that he was a great player, broke records, and by all (factual) accounts he did all of it without the help of P.E.D.'s.

Griffey is still the best player I ever remember seeing play. He had the best swing of all time. He was the most fluid fielder ever, and had the most natural power. First ballot H.O.F.'er for sure!!!

Griffey was the man back in the day and still can play but all those injuries slowed him down.I hope the knees hold up and if he is going to be ripped he will need to drop 15-18 lbs.and stay on the Bow Flex everyday to stay ripped. He can pass Whille Mays on the homers if he hits 30-35.My projection for the Kid...83Runs,32 Homers,94 Rbi's.

the only true non-steroid homer guy out there, a real star and role model----YES, ROLE MODEL....only 31 homers to pass Mays and then it's only Babe, Hank, and The Kid at the top for our lifetimes......I don't count anybody in the steroid club among my home run champs, that includes a big NO ADMIT for Arod.
