Indians interview Acta; Valentine, Mattingly next

  • Print

CLEVELAND (AP)—Manny Acta led off the second round of interviews to be Cleveland’s next manager. The heavy hitters are coming up.

Acta, fired by the Washington Nationals in July after 2 1/2 rebuilding seasons, spent nearly eight hours meeting with Indians owners Larry and Paul Dolan, general manager Mark Shapiro and others on Tuesday at Progressive Field as the team searches for Eric Wedge’s successor.

Acta was the first candidate to get a face-to-face interview with the Indians, who plan to meet with former New York Mets manager Bobby Valentine and Los Angeles Dodgers hitting coach Don Mattingly. Torey Lovullo, Cleveland’s Triple-A manager in Columbus, interviews on Friday.

Shapiro said the team, which conducted phone interviews with as many as 10 candidates last week during meetings in Goodyear, Ariz., is considering two other finalists he declined to identify. Shapiro wasn’t sure when Valentine, who took the Mets to the World Series in 2000, would come to Cleveland. The team is trying to work around his obligations as an ESPN analyst.

Shapiro also did not disclose Mattingly as one of his candidates, but the former Yankees All-Star first baseman confirmed he spoke with the Indians last week and will talk to them again. Mattingly, who has no managing experience, said he also has been approached by Washington about their opening.

“I’ve wanted to manage for a long time,” Mattingly said as the Dodgers, trailing 3-1 in the NLCS to Philadelphia, prepared for Game 4 on Wednesday. “When the opportunity knocks, you kick the door down. I’m flattered there are organizations that are interested. I’ve been through what it takes to get from one place to another.”

Shapiro also said he spoke with both former Indians manager Mike Hargrove and former third baseman Travis Fryman, and although either would be a popular hire with Cleveland fans, neither are finalists.

“Mike is a guy I have immense respect for and appreciation of,” Shapiro said. “I made the decision that at this time it just wasn’t the right fit for a variety of reasons.”

The 59-year-old Valentine has spent the past six seasons managing the Chiba Lotte Marines in Japan. They would not renew Valentine’s contract of at $4 million per season, prompting a protest by the team’s fans, and Valentine has said he wants to get back into major league baseball. He had a 1,117-1,072 record with Texas and the Mets.

Acta was confident and relaxed during a 20-minute meeting with reporters. He spoke candidly about his time in Washington, where his won-loss record carried the ugly blemishes of rebuilding.

The club went only 158-252 under Acta, but the Nationals lacked the talent to compete and were regarded as baseball’s worst team.

Acta said his time in the nation’s capital prepared him for other jobs in similar-sized baseball markets. It was a job he could not afford to turn down.

“Let’s be realistic,” he said. “Everybody in this town and every town in America would want a top-notch guy, a Joe Torre, a Tony La Russa, one of those guys to walk in and manage your club. The reality is, those guys don’t go for those jobs. Every one of them already paid their dues and those type of jobs go to guys like me at the beginning.”

Acta, 40, said he has no regrets about his time with the Nationals, who fired him after a 21-61 start last season.

“I knew what I was getting into,” he said. “I knew rebuilding is tough. It’s grueling and you are going to suffer in Ws and Ls and people earn their right to judge you on that. But I’m thankful that baseball people count more the Ws than the Ls when you are going through the rebuilding process.”

Last week, Acta interviewed for Houston’s opening. He was drafted by the Astros as a 17-year-old and played and managed in their system until 2001. When he was 22, the Astros told him he could not play in the majors, so he turned to coaching as a way to make baseball his life.

Acta, who prides himself on his communication skills, was prepared for his interview with the Indians. He spent countless hours watching them on TV last season, knowing they might be changing managers. He rattled off the names of Indians players, from stars to part-timers, and said the rebuilding project in Cleveland is far different from the one he left in Washington.

“This is far and away advanced,” he said. “The Indians have a lot of pieces in place.”

Acta was born in the Dominican Republic and his ability to communicate with Cleveland’s Latino players is a plus.

“I can communicate with them without anything getting lost in translation,” he said. “It’s on my side but I hope I’m not getting the job just because I’m bilingual.”

you really don't need a lot of spanish to manage the cleveland indians, just a lot of "ay cabron" and "dios mio" and you've got most of it covered.

The Indians firing Wedge after the '09 season is just plain stupid. No manager, past or present, could have won consistently in MLB with that AA roster the Indians fielded for the '09 season. The GM should have been fired, not the manager IMO.

5 guys remain on managers list and 2 are from Indians, and neither one of them is ready for a Big league Job!

Boby V will cost us Big Bucks and he will take no crap, which is something I like about him.
Not sure Boby V could will put up with Shapiro and all his spin doctor crap.

Many Acta, whats he bring to the table? not sure except he is Biling...whats that worth.

Don Mattingly is UNPROVEN like the other 4 except Boby Valentine!
And if u are not going to go with Valentine you might as well as go with HARGROVE.

Still 2 many other guys out there we could have that Shapiro has not even talk to yet.
Larry Bowa, Phil Garner, Tony Pena, just 2 name a few guys. Why has Shapiro not even talk with Tony Pena? I am not sure this so called managerial list of 10 people exist.
We keep hearing the same name from Indians front office all the time, they have not done a extensive
search, you can tell. Oh John Farrell another cronie of Shapiro, a not ready for prime time player.

Something to think about, we could have had Jim Tracy in July have we got rid of Wedge then.
How would Jim Tracy look as a Manager in Cleveland......

    G

Who would u rather have Acta or Tony Pena? I say Tony Pena for sure, bring in Sandy Alomar as 1 of his coach's.

Good luck to who anyone who gets Manny Acta. No doubt he didn't have much to work with, but he is not a strong character, he could not get or keep these guys motivated and the most unforgivable thing is he didn't demand better from his players. Well..the notable exception might be the Dukes fiasco who was 5 minutes late because of a charity...that was really embarrassing to the whole Nats team. The shoddy defense of the Nats was horrific and the guy didn't even make them get out there and have them practice extra defense. The Nats have serious issues that start in the front office(thank god Bowden is history) but Acta did not make the best of what he had. Also...it drove me nuts to watch his pitchers get in trouble and he would rarely go out to the mound to talk to them. There was one game against the Phillies where the rookie Pitcher Shairon Martis had loaded the bases with friggin Ryan Howard coming to the plate. Not a soul came out there to talk to him...to calm him, give him advice, confidence anything...and of course...Howard hit a grand slam. A rookie facing Ryan Howard with the bases loaded and no one came to talk to him...all I can do is shake my head, and of course wish whoever gets Manny Acta all the luck...they are going to need it.

I really don't understand why this guy is getting so much PR in the press. He is not that impressive and there are so many better managers out there that should at least get a better look then what has been going on. Come on the fans deserve so much better!

Rick Manning isn't the first player or last to sleep with another players wife. While it is disgusting it has nothing to do with whether he would be a good manager. Back in the early 70's Mike kekick and Fritz Peterson of the Yankees swapped wives also disgusting but they continued to play.

Hey, I wonder what R.Crennel is doing. He was always a good guy, like Wedge.

You know what will happen if we go with Acta. He and the team will learn and grow, at the expense of the fans, and just about the time we start looking good...Sh*tpiro will get rid of them all.

Acta will then be in the playoffs and we'll "rebuild" once again.

BOYCOTT THE TRIBE IN 2010...or until Sh*tpiro learns how to scout & draft.

Don't let Acta's record in DC fool you, he's going to be a good manager one day. I live in DC and have become a Nats fan by default and while Acta was far from perfect, he was doomed from day 1 by how messed up the Nats front office was. I don't know if Cleveland/Acta is the best fit, but Tribe fans shouldn't immediately write him off. Look at Torre's early managerial record with the Mets as how a young/talented manager can be hampered by horrific front office. I'm not saying Acta's going to win a half dozen pennants in Cleveland, but I'd MUCH rather have Acta than Hargrove. Hargrove is a likable guy, but a chump as manager. The main reason Hargrove won so much in the late 90s was because the rest of the AL Central should have been playing in AAA.

Manny Acta! Awesome! Because what Cleveland needs is a manager experienced in losses! People mention Hargrove as always, but what this team lacks (among other things...) are the veterans he had to help groom the young kids. The Dolans are going to go with the most affordable choice and if they really want to keep with the "Tank 2010" theme, they should just hire me and I'll take some of you along for my coaching staff. Anyone willing to start a petition??

Oh God, it just gets worse and worse. They are going to hire somebody to make Wedge look like a genius. Mark my words, this time next year somebody will be posting to bring Wedge back.

Maybe they could bring in a few guys like Manning, Kekich and Fritz Peterson. The team wouldn't be any better but the club house would be a lot more interesting. ;-) Maybe the PD would actually have something to write about then.
