Sabean, Bochy receive extensions from Giants

SAN FRANCISCO (AP)—Giants general manager Brian Sabean and manager Bruce Bochy have been planning for the 2010 season for a while now, even with their own contract situations unresolved.

Both knew their futures with the club would be handled in time. Now, they know they’re staying in San Francisco.

Bochy and Sabean each received two-year contract extensions with a club option Tuesday after meeting with managing general partner Bill Neukom. Both men expected to return, but Neukom had said he would wait until the end of the season to make a decision after sitting down to debrief on the year.

While the Giants missed the playoffs for a sixth straight season, they were in the NL wild-card chase well into September and at 88-74 won 16 more games than in 2008.

“The job of the Giants in the 2009 season was to return to winning baseball,” Neukom said on a conference call. “The Giants had a winning season and then some. We are not complacent about that. We have more work to do because we want to get the San Francisco Giants to be a franchise that’s a contender year in and year out.”

Sabean is the longest-tenured GM in baseball after completing his 13th season with San Francisco. Bochy’s three-year contract worth roughly $6 million expired after the season ended.

Bochy and Sabean believe this rebuilding franchise is headed in the right direction to become a regular contender again, but knew it would take time with a young roster. Neukom clearly saw the strides he’d hoped for with Bochy and Sabean leading the way.

“We’re at a good place in a good time to use this season as a springboard,” Sabean said.

Bochy has been committed to “changing the culture” around the Giants and said when the season ended, “We’re in a win mode now.”

There were significant highlights this season, most notably Jonathan Sanchez’s(notes) no-hitter against San Diego on July 10 and left-hander Randy Johnson(notes) becoming the 24th pitcher in major league history to win 300 games.

Sabean guided the wild-card Giants to the 2002 World Series and NL West crowns in 1997, 2000 and ’03, their last year in the playoffs.

Sabean acknowledges he’s made his share of mistakes along the way, too.

He has been criticized for signing players to big contracts such as pitcher Barry Zito’s(notes) $126 million, seven-year deal through 2013 with a club option for 2014, and a $60 million, five-year contract for center fielder Aaron Rowand(notes) done in December 2007.

Sabean is gearing up for a busy winter. One of his top priorities will be to upgrade the offense by adding a big bat in the middle of the order, though he’s said that will be a challenge in this free-agent market.

The Giants could be in for a complicated, expensive arbitration process with ace Tim Lincecum(notes), the 2008 NL Cy Young Award winner who went 15-7 with a 2.48 ERA in 32 starts and 225 1-3 innings this year.

Sabean compared Lincecum to Phillies slugger Ryan Howard(notes), who won $10 million in an arbitration hearing before the 2008 season.

While Sabean has vowed not to trade Lincecum or fellow All-Star pitcher Matt Cain(notes), he said he might consider dealing a pitcher to acquire a powerful bat.

“We all have the same thing in mind—let’s get back to postseason and the World Series,” Bochy said.

San Francisco hopes to bring back second baseman Freddy Sanchez(notes), who was acquired in a trade with the Pirates on July 29 but was limited to 25 games because of injuries. The 31-year-old Sanchez was hindered by a shoulder injury, then underwent surgery last week to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee.

Bochy knows a lot can be built from this year’s success with emerging players, even if there are many changes this offseason. Infielder Rich Aurilia(notes) and right fielder Randy Winn(notes) aren’t likely to return, and catcher Bengie Molina(notes) appears headed for free agency.

“If anybody deserves credit for this year’s turnaround it’s these two people, Brian and Bruce,” Neukom said. “The encouraging thing is we think we’re back to playing baseball the way it ought to be played.”

Bochy and Sabean are still in the process of evaluating the coaching staff, and there could be some changes there.

The 54-year-old Bochy went 143-181 in his first two seasons as Giants skipper but showed improvement in 2009 with a mixture of veterans and young players.

After managing the San Diego Padres for 12 seasons, Bochy was hired by San Francisco in October 2006 to replace Felipe Alou.

The difference between the NY Yankees, Bosox, Philli, both LA's, and the old Oakland A's under Finley and all ther other MLB teams is not money. These teams won't settle for MEDIOCRITY.

I am a Giants fan and I am glad they only got two year deals, Bochy did a good job for most of the year with the pitching staff, but thats about it. He has no pull in offense, I recall him pitch running using pitchers way too much, of course his options on choosing someone who could hit was limited. As for Sabean he makes a lot of bad veteran signings but to be honest thats sometimes all he can get. Giants have the best ballpark in the bigs but players want to get paid and hit homeruns so sometimes he has to go with certain guys, I like the way the Giants went after some help in trying to make the playoffs and if they get one huge hitting megastar they could be in the playoffs next year.

I hope they don't trade Jonathan Sanchez, he has done very well and has potential to be even better. I think they will regret it. I also hope they don't keep Molina or Winn, they are washed up. Whiteside is very good defensively even though he can't hit, and Posey can be worked in regularly - besides the Panda can catch too.

Now that we are set for a pair of 81 win seasons the next few years, can I ask if "the best GM and manager in baseball" (neukom said it) have any plans to replace Lansford, Winn, Renteria, and B-Weezy? Bri Wilson has one pitch only, a fastball, and that means either strikeout or home run. Carney Lansford orchestrated the worst offensive performance I can remember...maybe Canseco was right and he is a fool. Anyhow, I say go with young talent to replace Winn and Renteria and then put Romo in the closer role. B Weezy is great trade material right now since he hasn't blown a save in a playoff game yet.

Congrats to both. Hoping to see a strong Giant and Padre seasons as it is much more exciting to play these teams when they are contenders. Go Dodgers! I was not happy when the Giants were almost playing in FL as well as the Padres set to go to Washington DC. I'm also glad that the AZ D'Backs weren't forced to go to the AL Oh, and I was pulling for the Rockies in the playoffs against Philly. I kind of like the NL West. Hope all the teams stay healthy.

Hmmm...I'm not sure what to think. On one hand, if Nostrodamus and the Mayans are right, then in 3 years none of this matters! On the other hand, I would have preferred the Giants exercising Sabean's 2010 option, rather than extending him. Between him and Bochy, Sabean has much more to prove and to make up for. I'm OK with Bochy getting 2 more years (especially since there really isn't anyone better in the market).
In terms of how Sabean can redeemed himself, perhaps signing 1 of the following 6 players (either free agent or via trade):

    1. M. CABRERA (I've had a man-crush on this guy since he bounced the Giants out of the '03 playoffs...a young, right-handed slugger who averages .300++, 30 HRs, 100+ rbi's). * If this requires trading Cain or Sanchez and/or Valdez/Martinez/Sadowski, then do it!!! *
    2. A. Gonzalez (trade to SD - Sanchez, Ishikawa, and Valdez)
    3. P. Fielder (We'll teach him some different choreography...trade to Mil - somewhere between #1 and #2)
    4. J. Bay (too expensive?)
    5. J. Dye or P. Konerko (any power-hitting right-handed hitter to replace Molina's clean-up duties)
    6. M. Holliday (I've never been thrilled about him and his defense, but AT&T Park favors power righties)

Go Giants in 2010...playoffs or bust (aka. fire Bochy AND Sabean)!

The proof is in the pudding!! Guess the EXECS are satisfied with the same "flavor" year after year. Just don't expect much, because with those two running things, you settle for less than adequate.

Fairweather fan? I'm more of a Giants fan than you. I know more baseball than you, you old fart. You obviously don't know baseball. Go become a Dodgers fan.

Frandsen isn't great. I never mentioned him.

So us almost moving to Florida means that the worst GM gets tenure? Screw you, old fart.

Giants won 16 more games. The Nationals could win 20 more games and still be under .500.

"But theres much more to being a Giants fan that winning the world series." Yeah, you clearly demonstrated your loyalty to winning. Go have lunch with Brian Sabean since you've embraced mediocrity wholeheartedly.

Go retire in AZ and watch the D-Backs, and stop pretending to know anything about the Giants.

Don't trade SP J. Sanchez for a big bat, if he can cut down his walk total, he will be a 15 game winner with 3.50 ERA for sure. And he is only 25 year old. Trade Sabean for Fielder, straight up.

here we go again the fair weather fans wants to replace everyone on the teams. You cant trade zito with his big contract. they won 16 more games and your complaining? do any of you fair weather fans understand the Giants dont have the yankees checkbook? Get rid of Bengie? are you out of your mind? Posey is not ready for the majors Frandsen? give me a break he cant hit . There are some of us diehard Giants fans that remember our team almost became the Tampa Bay Giants. iT would be nice if the giants wont the world series, But theres much more to being a Giants fan that winning the world series. why do fair weather fans always demand a worlds series title? GO move to New York.

Bochy = You have no clue. puts in terrible pitchers to ruin wins.
Renteria = You're telling me Burriss isn't better?? not only better, but $8 million cheaper.
Rowand = Gamer. But you're no Darren Lewis with your stats.
Molina = You have heart but you have no legs and you are not a cleanup hitter. Posey's turn.
    Garko = Yhanks for nothing.
    Winn = Bye, bye.
Zito = I'm so glad you did well last year. Now we can actually trade you.
Martinez = How the hell did you make it to the big leagues? You don't have any pitches.
Sanchez = Your no-hitter isn't enough to keep you around. Bring in a bat for Sanchez.
Brian Wilson = The most overrated closer. Fastball, fastball, fastball, loss. Cut your hair, loser.

The man behind the OVERRATED Giants = Brian Sabean.

here we go again-the pitching will come down in 2010 and the hitting should improve-but we need hitters with more patience and take walks and not swing at balls out of the strike zone. other team wear out our pitchers by the 7,8, and 9th innings. we can not give the other pitchers a 7, 8 ball innings, Therefore, the same old baloney for two more years under the same losing General manager Sabean and Manager Bochy. You can see at the end of the season, everybody is so tired and overworked that even getting into the playoff, we are not going anywhere. We need a drastic change.Looks like we still is run by the Safewqy guy. We have guys that do not know talent. Same old stuff and no world series for at least ten more years under the present ownership.

Sabean's big mistake was not going out and getting a legitimate power hitter or two for the stretch run. There's no guarantee that the Giants' pitching will be what it was this year.

Now he says it "might be difficult" to get a good hitter in this free agent market - already making excuses for failure.

The Giants' success this year was more due to luck than Sabean. They were 12 out of 16 teams in runs scored, next to last in HRs and RBI, and dead last in OBP and OPS. DEAD LAST in all of baseball. DEAD LAST. And they are saying they accomplished their mission this year?
