Giants bring back Molina, hopeful about Sanchez

  • Print

SAN FRANCISCO (AP)—Bengie Molina(notes) is back behind the plate with San Francisco, though the Giants aren’t so sure when Freddy Sanchez(notes) will be ready to play second base.

Saying he was “shocked” that he didn’t draw a multiyear offer on the free-agent market, Molina returned to the Giants with a $4.5 million, one-year contract. The sides agreed to terms earlier this week and the deal was completed Friday, one day after the 35-year-old catcher passed a physical.

“There was never an offer out there like we thought it was going to be,” Molina said on a conference call. “Nothing developed. A lot of teams were not, like, into me.”

The Giants also addressed Sanchez’s left shoulder injury, which might sideline him beyond opening day.

Athletic trainer Dave Groeschner said Sanchez had surgery Dec. 23, information the team did not reveal until manager Bruce Bochy told a radio station on Thursday night.

“We planned to announce this very soon,” Groeschner explained.

Doctors repaired Sanchez’s torn labrum and cleaned up his AC joint, Groeschner said, adding that the normal recovery time for such a procedure is probably 10-15 weeks.

The 32-year-old Sanchez has been rehabbing in Arizona with a goal of returning in time for opening day.

“It’s a certain possibility, but it may not happen,” Groeschner said.

If Sanchez isn’t ready, the Giants can turn to Juan Uribe(notes) at second base after re-signing the utility infielder to a $3.25 million, one-year contract this month.

Molina can earn another $1.5 million this year in performance bonuses based on games started. He’s eager to catch San Francisco’s young pitching staff again, though he won’t have to hit cleanup anymore thanks to an improved offense.

“I was just thrilled to have Bengie back. We all know what a great job he’s done for us,” Bochy said. “He knows our staff, our division.”

Molina turned down $5.5 million in guaranteed money from the New York Mets as part of a proposal that included a vesting option for 2011. But if he stays healthy, he would earn $500,000 more from the Giants this year than under New York’s bid.

He said if the Mets had offered two years guaranteed, there’s a strong possibility he would have signed with them.

“We were very clear with them at the beginning and very clear with them at the end, when nothing happened,” Molina said. “I don’t understand why they didn’t want to commit to another year, with my numbers and my experience and things like that.”

With only one-year proposals to choose from, Molina gladly returned to San Francisco, where he and his family were comfortable. Plus, he said he thinks the Giants have a better chance to make the playoffs than the Mets.

Still, the move was a surprise, because Giants general manager Brian Sabean had indicated Molina wouldn’t be back for a fourth season with the team.

“That ship has sailed,” Sabean said at the winter meetings last month.

And then it turned back.

“It became a great fit. Was it expected? No,” Sabean said Friday. “He’s certainly welcomed back with open arms. Just an interesting twist of fate.”

The slow-footed Molina hit .265 with 80 RBIs and a career-high 20 home runs last season, ranking second among NL catchers in homers, RBIs and extra-base hits (44).

“It’s a relief knowing what transpired because there wasn’t another offensive catcher out there,” Sabean said.

Molina is a .276 career hitter with 139 home runs and 675 RBIs in 12 big league seasons with the Angels, Blue Jays and Giants (2007-09). He won consecutive Gold Glove awards in 2002-03 with Anaheim.

A three-time All-Star and the 2006 NL batting champion with Pittsburgh, Sanchez was acquired July 29 in a trade but played in only 25 games for San Francisco because of injuries to his left shoulder and left knee. He had knee surgery late in the season and signed a $12 million, two-year contract with the Giants on Oct. 30.

Sanchez had an MRI before signing the new deal, but the Giants didn’t think he needed shoulder surgery.

“MRIs are not perfect,” Groeschner said. “It’s not just, get an MRI, read it and go. There’s a lot of interpretation involved.”

While rehabbing from the knee surgery, Sanchez started his offseason conditioning and baseball activities. That’s when he felt serious discomfort in his non-throwing shoulder.

“Freddy’s obviously sensitive. He wants to get back out there,” Groeschner said. “He’s probably right where he should be, or a little ahead of schedule.”

Sanchez batted .293 with seven home runs and 41 RBIs last season in 111 games for Pittsburgh and San Francisco.

NOTES: To make room for Molina on the 40-man roster, the Giants designated first baseman Jesus Guzman(notes) for assignment.

Implicx - Scott Barnes, SF's 3rd best pitching prospect at the time, was traded for Ryan Garko. Tim Alderson went to Pitt in the Sanchez deal, and he hasn't done all that well. Prospects aren't sure things. Sure, Timmy A. could become something great, but there's a chance he never gets past AAA.

And if Eugenio Velez starts, I'm giving up on Bochy, Sabes, and Bow Tie. Just because Velez goes VRROOOOM, does not make up for the complete lack of a bat, and the catastrophe that is his attempt at playing defense. Yes, Rowand is "meh" at best, but that beats the hell out of Velez.

Just a couple years until Neal, Kieschnick, Crawford, Noonan, Adrianza, Posey, and, with a little luck and corruption, Villalona are patrolling the field.

I feel like I could do a better job than Sabean at GM! He always signs veteran players who are way past their prime, whats the deal??? No playoffs since 2003 I think and Sabean gets an extension! They best make the playoffs this year, I know the pitching will be good, will the offense??

Also, also... RoLand at LEAD OFF ????? Give me a beak. Screw those pathetic stats about his OBP at the leadoff position last year. He can't hit, can't run and half the time he can't catch. Can he throw? Ask Joe Montana........... Another sickening Sab-a-toge biz deal. He only had ONE good year at Cin. And they give this jerk 60 mill. Hope he had a good winter. Albiet, he was doing OK for a while last year before he crashed into the wall and hurt his shoulder -- am I correct on this ??? None the less, leadoff? They're just putting him in there to justify all the money. Hope Valez takes his job. E.V. is not the greatest leadoff, but he has speed. Now if he can only figure out how to run the bases............

Molina just needs a reduced roll of importance in the batting scheme of things. Being 4th was too much for him. Too much expectation. Batting lower in the line up will take the heat off of him a bit. Catchers aren't supposed to run. Let him bat 6th or 7th and just let him hit. Posey will be back at mid season, if he is indeed worth all his hype. If not, it doesn't matter anyway.

What a POS loser. I know for a fact he was offered 2 years guaranteed from the Mets, with a vesting option for 2012. He wanted 3 guaranteed. Greedy SOB, move to Haiti and die!

I'm OK with this signing as long as Molina doesn't bat clean up and clog the bases. My grandmother runs faster than Molina and she's been dead for twenty years. The next move has to be signing free agent Byrnes to a minor league contract. If he was hurt last year (he stunk it up) and he's healthy and the Diamondbacks have to pay the bulk of his contract this is a no-brainer. He's light out hitting in our ball park so why not take the chance. He's gone on record as voicing his desire to play in SF so Sabean, make the move!

benji molina is the team's best player. why not resign him? derosa and huff are ok, signings but posey is still not ready for the full time job. molina will get more ab's and game's but thats ok, with me. 1 year deal is good with me. with incentives, just hope we try to get at least 1 more hitter. or a pitcher.

well, no one year deal is bad, especially in this case. However Molina absolutely cannot be the clean up hitter. He is a good catcher, but he should bat either 6th or 7th in the order. Last year was a disastrous Single A lineup, this year its moved up to AA. Its pathetic what the Giants are doing, but hopefully they have long term plans for Cain, Lincecum and Sandoval. Btway do you guys remember, we gave up Tim Alderson for Ryan Garko. Alderson is RHP and one of the top prospects for the Giants and that idiot Sabean, not only gave him up, and Garko hit 2 homeruns and we let him go. I mean there is no logic to what Sabean does. Shierholtz has the best arm out of RF, Renteria is not good at SS and has lost his range, Uribe is more suited for 3B not SS, so who the hell is our back up SS? Giants should have signed a SS or bring Burris back.

having all these extra useless options makes the lineup even worse. How do we trust Renteria day to day or Uribe or Rowand. Day to day i want to take contact hitters and people who will take walks and have good AB. The lineup is so confusing and useless. But I want this lineup to play the most this year, but ofcourse that another idiot Bochy is gonna botch the lineup, give them no instructions to take pitches and walks and we will for sure lost 10 extra games this year and back to below .500.

    Velez/Rowand (CF)
    Sanchez (2B)
    Derosa (LF)
    Sandoval (3B)
    Huff (1B)
Uribe/Renteria/Burris/Random fan from the stadium (SS)
    Posey (C)
    Shierholtz (RF)
    Pitcher
