Torre says he doesn’t anticipate extension

LOS ANGELES (AP)—Joe Torre says he doesn’t plan to manage the Los Angeles Dodgers after his contract expires.

“I have one year on my contract and I don’t anticipate it being more than that,” he said Tuesday, two days before the Dodgers open the NLCS against Philadelphia.

However, he noted, “I’ve said that before and my wife doesn’t believe me at all.”

The 69-year-old manager is in the middle of a three-year deal he signed nearly two years ago after 12 seasons guiding the New York Yankees. The Dodgers are 179-145 with two consecutive NL West titles under Torre.

His 83 postseason victories are more than any other manager in major league history, and his 14 consecutive playoff appearances as a manager are tied with Atlanta’s Bobby Cox (1991-2005).

General manager Ned Colletti said Tuesday that he’ll sit down with Torre to discuss his future after the season ends.

If the Dodgers were to advance to their first World Series since 1988, Torre said he doesn’t think he’ll walk away a year early.

“It’s fun and if we were fortunate enough to win the World Series, it would make that next year so much sweeter,” he said.

Torre won four World Series titles with the Yankees, the last in 2000.

“I never get tired of this stuff, that’s one thing I found out,” he said. “You think once you win it, you say, `OK, I got it, I don’t need to do this anymore,’ but you do. You need to do it.”

Torre will be a HOFer. That being said, he was a below .500 manager before going to the Yankees as was another HOF Yankee manager, Casey Stengel. Cannot win without the players and sometimes cannot win even if you got the players. No matter what you think of Torre, he will go into HOF as one of the great ones.

not anticipating a new contract and not anticipating a world series ring as he hasn't won with highest payroll and best talent since.

As for post #114 - Torre doesn't waver and he's not undecided like Farve. He wanted a two year contract from the Yankees and didn't get it. So the left for LA and signed a three year deal, which is up after next year. Farve changes his mind everyday. Can't believe you're comparing Torre to Farve. Now, Farve and Roger Clemens have the same undecisive minds and super egos. So if you want to defend your idol Farve, just wait until Clemens announuces his comeback. Or wait until Jordan's big comeback at age 50.

Peter Gammons said on radio that Joe Torre is miserable in LA. He and the McCourts don't get along. Hmm...if true, the McCourts are a bunch of idiots. Sell the team and go back to Boston to operate more parking lots. Joe Torre never should have left NYY. I flew to New York for the final home series against the Orioles last year. It just didn't seem right that the pre-game ceremony did not include Joe Torre and Don Mattingly.

if this was Brett Favre saying this, people would be getting all over him. Apparently Joe Torre can be undecided and it's OK.

    CJS-
This year was the closest the Rockies will get to winning the World Series. Dodgers fired Jim Tracy but I bet you Tracy would gladly return to the NL WEST CHAMPS, whereas the Rockies are the ones that are getting old. Todd Helton is reaching the end of his career, so there goes your star player. And as for the Dodgers getting old with the exception of Kemp (24) and Ethier (27) you might want to take a look at this before betting against the dodgers next year...
    Broxton - 24
    Billinglsey- 24
    Kershaw-21
    Martin- 26
    Loney- 24

Good luck next year with the Rockies, try not to break a hip

Nice try...the Dodgers fired Tracy, and next year the sights are set clearly on the Dodgers.

Good luck this post season Dodgers and Dodgers fans....this is your last season of glory. Jim Tracy and the reloaded Rockies will take this year's NL West champs down and out of it by August 31st! The Dodgers are getting old (with the exception of Ethier & Kemp), and will be has-beens by next year!

Joe Torre beats his Yanks to end his coaching career. Sounds pretty sweet to me. I would be happy to bring back Jim Tracy, or even better, lets make Tommy LaSorda the new manager!

If Joe likes L.A., he'll want to stay there. He doesn't have the ambition to wander to some smaller market team just to prove he can win there.
