Cubs activate INF Miles, option RHP Stevens

CINCINNATI (AP)—Infielder Aaron Miles(notes) was activated Wednesday by the Chicago Cubs, who are about to get their starting catcher back, too.

Miles had been on the disabled list since June 29 with an injured elbow. He was back in the starting lineup at shortstop for the final game of a series against the Cincinnati Reds.

Miles is batting .203 with no homers and 46 RBIs this season. He also was on the disabled list from May 27 to June 10 with a strained right shoulder.

The Cubs have moved into first place in the NL Central with a strong run since the All-Star break, inching ahead of St. Louis. They’ve done it without catcher Geovany Soto(notes), who has been sidelined since June 7 by strained muscles in his left side.

General manager Jim Hendry watched Soto play on a rehab stint in the minors this week and thought he was ready to be activated. Soto is expected to rejoin the team Friday in Colorado for the start of a three-game series.

With Soto out, Koyie Hill(notes) has started 26 consecutive games, the first Cubs catcher to do that since Jody Davis started 38 straight in 1986. Manager Lou Piniella said Hill will continue to play regularly after Soto returns.

“He’ll do some catching as we get Soto in shape,” Piniella said. “I know the record (with Hill behind the plate). He’s done a really nice job. We appreciate it.”

Reliever Jeff Stevens(notes) was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday to open a roster spot for Miles. The right-hander had no record and a 2.84 ERA in five games with the Cubs.

The Cubs also granted an unconditional release to left-handers Jason Waddell(notes) and B.J. Ryan(notes), who had been pitching at Iowa.

Ryan, the former Blue Jays closer, signed a minor league deal with Chicago on July 16 and appeared in five games for Iowa. The 33-year-old reliever was 1-1 with a 6.53 ERA when Toronto released him on July 8.

“Ryan asked for his release today,” Hendry said. “He handled himself great. He just didn’t feel like he was going to be able to help us this year. He just wanted to go home and regroup. His velocity wasn’t there.”

Please stop complaining! for all u Cub fans who remember how bad they use to be. This is still a good season and there right in it. And for all those long suffering Cub fans like my self , the Cubs need to win before my health care gets taken over by the people who spoke & voted for my president . I'm going to sell my car now ( C 4 C ) because I want to save the car industry first before my self. WOW! Cubs in first, sounds like I'm complaining now. HAVING FUN ONLY.

Trade soriano and bradley toany team willing to give up a decent pitcher. hendry should go just for letting marquis go to colorado. hoffpar and fox can play every day for any team. catching is what the cubs realy need. soto is not every day and he needs to get in shape. bz

#24, Bradley and Gregg will not be sent down... they do not have options anymore, therefore if they are "sent down" they would have to clear waivers in order to stay with the team... therefore it will not happen, no matter how bad they may get. Bradley is starting to come around... Gregg has been better, and although we Cubs fans may think different, he has only blown 2 saves this year.

I agree with Jared F. I think it's lame that they sent Bobby Scales back down. He got on base more than most of the first-pitch swinging all-stars. And he never had a chance to play on a regular basis, which he should have done. I hope we haven't seen the last of him. It was a great story, and he delivered when he got the call.

And yet, the Cubs will still win the NL Central.

It doesn't matter who is on the DL until October. The biggest, and really only major worry for the Cubs is, will Ramirez return at 100% strength, or will his shoulder affect his swing all season?

derosa's number aren't the best. and woods are worse. ibanez would have been better then bradley, but who knew he was going to do what he is doing (ibanez i mean, not bradley). hendrys job is safe, the season is far from over. bring scales back soon though!

The Cubs Shouldn't have even started the season with Cox, he has sucked every single time he pitches.
They should have kept not only Derosa, but also Edmonds, I think he and Johnson together brought a lot of stability and and confidence that the team is really lacking this year. I agree with the guy who says Hendry's already fired but just dosent know it yet, I believe signing Bradley awarded Hendry the Fir and after the Cubs finish without making the playoffs he will earn th ed! And Lou will say The Cubs really are cursed its unbelieveable I quit!

As soon as the ink was dry on the DeRosa trade, they should have gone after Brian Roberts. Only been trying to get him for 2 years. The Gathright, Gaudin, Heileman experiment was a bust. I hope they get rid of Lee, and Sushi-Boy. Hoffpauir can freakin make any team as a starter. I hear Josh Vitters is gonna be a stud too.

Heilman is garbage and I think I said back when the deal was made that acquiring anyone from the 2008 Met's bullpen is a huge mistake....sometimes I hate being right.

When will Heilman go? Has he recorded an out yet this year? (That was facetious). That guy totally blows. 3 years, $10 million a year for Bradley? About a third of the way through the season, so can we project the following numbers; Hits 69, HRs, 15, RBI, 39? That's about $666,666.67 per home run. He has been the biggest waste of flesh I have seen in a Cubs uniform in some time.

If only Fox didn't have a stone glove. That kid can mash, but he can't pick up the ball. Hopefully his bat will make up for his glove.
