Zambrano to make rehab start at Class A

  • Print

CHICAGO (AP)—Cubs right-hander Carlos Zambrano(notes) is scheduled to make a rehab start for Class A Peoria on Thursday before returning Aug. 25 against the Washington Nationals.

Zambrano, on the 15-day disabled list with back spasms, threw a side session Sunday and is expected to throw another side session Tuesday before his rehab start for Peoria.

He was scheduled to pitch against Colorado on Aug. 7, but was scratched 15 minutes before the game with stiffness in his lower back. Back problems also limited Zambrano to just three innings in his start against the Florida Marlins on Aug. 1.

Zambrano, who is 7-4 with a 3.35 ERA, said he will work on strengthening his abdominal muscles to help prevent further back problems.

“I got to be honest with me, (media) and the fans. I’m 28 years old. I’m not 16 anymore,” Zambrano said. “I’m a big guy. I work out every day hard. One of the things I got to do is work on my abs. I have to do more abs to make my back more stronger.”

The Cubs will keep Zambrano around 75 pitches in his rehab start.

“Remember he hasn’t pitched more than three innings in over three weeks,” manager Lou Piniella said. “He hasn’t run the bases or swung the bat so we have to be a little cautious with him.”

Piniella will welcome back left-hander Ted Lilly(notes) off the disabled list on Monday night at San Diego. Lilly is scheduled to start and Piniella said he will be limited to around 85-90 pitches.

Lilly, who is 9-7 with a 3.59 ERA, was on the disabled list with left shoulder inflammation.

hey Lind and Mr. Common Sense (#55-56)- Have you not heard? A Cubs fan has no sense-otherwise they
would not be rooting for the Cubs, a franchise that has not won a World Series since Teddy's Rough Riders.
    GO DODGER BLUE!

Yes AdrainM, the Cubs don't have crack sells, boring fans, bars, or a World Series ring (although the only crime at either stadium occurs at Wrigley--remember the shooting, the beer throwing, the threats to Bartman) so I feel just as safe at The Cell as I do at Wrigley. Damn, that was a dumb, stereotypical post.

#50 bozo man. you are right on the money.
another one from south of the boarder who is either a cheat, liar or wants to take his money back home.
doesn't care about the fans or his teammates.
i can't believe that someone that signed for $100 million + wouldn't keep himself in shape.
let's make a rule that you must be a citizen of the united states before you can play baseball.
also must pass an english test.

What is the deal with the injuries on this team. I do not remember a team that has had some many injuries like this ever before. You have to wonder about their conditioning. Secondly, why hasn't Fox been given a chance to catch. In the few brief chances he has had, I thought he has done a good job. Soto is the next Jerome Walton. The only thing he has done so far this year is a few hits here and there. Unfortunately, hits from a bong don't go towards your batting average.
