Cubs manager Piniella: ‘Blame me’
CHICAGO (AP)—Lou Piniella has offered himself up to critics looking to blame somebody for the Chicago Cubs’ disappointing season.
“Invariably, when things don’t go right, it’s always the manager’s fault,” Piniella said before the Cubs lost 5-4 to the Nationals on Thursday. “You want to blame me? Take your shots. It doesn’t bother me one bit, OK?”
Piniella, who led the Cubs to NL Central titles in each of his first two seasons—the first time they reached the postseason in consecutive years in a century—is under contract for 2010 and has said he expects to return.
The sale of the team was just announced, however, so there are many unanswered questions about the future—especially in light of the club’s mediocre performance this season. Chicago is nine games behind St. Louis in the Central and trails four others for the wild card.
“I’m the same manager … this year as I was last year as I was the year before. Same manager. No different,” Piniella said. “When you don’t win, somebody’s got to stand up and be the scapegoat. And if you all want to say it’s the manager, say it’s the manager.
“It’s fine with me.”
Still, he said he could only do so much for his club, which fell to 63-62 after Thursday’s loss. The Cubs dropped two of three to Washington, the worst team in the majors.
“I do the best I can every day; I can’t do any more,” said Piniella, who managed Cincinnati to the 1990 championship and won three division titles with Seattle.
“I let the players play,” he said. “It’s their game. It’s not my game, it’s not the coaches’ game, it’s not anybody else’s game. It’s the players’ game. All we can do is encourage them and give them an opportunity.
“I do care about wins and losses. I get hired to win baseball games. That’s my batting average, that’s my ERA,” Piniella added. “But … there are only so many things that I can do as a manager, and the rest of it is certainly not in my full control.”
That includes a roster that had significant turnover from last season, when the Cubs won 97 games before being swept out of the playoffs by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Leaders such as Kerry Wood(notes), Henry Blanco(notes) and Mark DeRosa(notes) weren’t retained. Additions included talented but temperamental right fielder Milton Bradley(notes) and failed closer Kevin Gregg(notes). In addition, several top players have performed below expectations and several have been injured.
“It hasn’t been one of our better mixes,” Piniella said. “Winning has a lot to do with chemistry. It makes the team come together a lot quicker. Remember, I told you all this spring we had a big turnover. Sometimes it takes a while. It doesn’t necessarily just fall in your lap.
“But yeah, this hasn’t been … one of my better-chemistry teams,” Piniella said.
Bradley, signed to a three-year, $30 million contract before the season, has struggled offensively most of the season. He also has had a shouting match with Piniella, has sparred with umpires and has gone at it with fans at Wrigley Field who have booed him. Earlier this week, he said many Cubs fans were “idiots” and full of “hatred.”
“Some people seem to think if I didn’t play baseball that I’d be collecting cans or something,” Bradley said Thursday after getting booed several times during an 0-for-5 afternoon.
“I’m a highly intelligent guy,” he said. “I chose to play baseball. … And unless you’ve been paid 30 million to play right field for the Chicago Cubs, then you can’t speak on how I might feel because you don’t know.”
A day earlier, he said he hoped games didn’t go into extra innings because he wanted to spend “the least amount of time as possible” at Wrigley.
Asked if he was upset when he read those comments, Piniella said: “Who needs … uh … we’ve had enough problems here with injuries and so forth that we don’t really need any more controversy of any sorts.”

Thanks for the line-up compliment. Perhaps you're right to say that Marmol and Dempster should stay on for the 2010 regular season. I think Marmol and Dempster could improve tremendously if the NEW! Cubs GM would try and sign on Maddux as the new Cubs pitching instructor. Also, I agree maybe it is a good idea to make Fox our new first string catcher, he is a big guy and would be able to block home base when needed.
However, I don't think the Birds are about to give up Holliday or DeRo anytime soon, but yes it would be great if the new Cubs owner could swing such a miraculous trade. Anyway... Go Pinella Go, hey Chicago whadda you say the Cubs will come back to win in a 2010 day.

Take a loss get rid of Zambrano (for his childish and demoralizing stupid attitude), Bradley (for being a big jerk), Soriano (for always being a whiner) and Soto (for being a careless lard-butt like Zambrano).
As far as the other present members (players and couches), of the Cubs MLB team are concerned, sorry but you guys should pack up too. Why? because you guys lack the consistency the team needs to stay on top of the central division and the tenacity it takes to get to the playoffs and win the NL pennant to go on the the WS championship competition.
Next year Rickett should invest some money and negotiate for quality veteran pitchers like Halladay from the Bluejays, a comprable quality veteran short-stop player, and two quality veteran catchers. Don't short change the critical positions and keep the present Cubs players that I mentioned above and what you have now are the 2010 MLB World Series Champions

milton bradley, you're a overpaid underachieving crybaby. no wonder you never stay with a ballclub. what general manager would want bradley after the 30 million has been paid out?
sorriano, if your knee is too whacked out, stop hopping around the outfield each time you attempt to field your position. you look retarded. and quit standing in the batters box after those rare occassions when you do get a hit. RUN! let the fans be the spectators. if you are so vain that you must watch, tape the game and watch it later.
soto, put the pot smoking behind you and play to your capabilities. and don't be such a dumbass to do drugs again.

Dgodinez, obviously you're a black guy defending your brother.
They boo and heckle Bradley, not because Wrigleys filled with a pile of drunken, rowdy caucasions.
But because he's making 30 mil to not produce and cry like a little babyback @#$%.
This guy is literally, the worst possible acquisition the Cubs could've pulled off.
Not only on paper, but he's managed to destroy a good piece of what was a decent chemistry beforehand.
"unless you get paid $30million to play RF for the cubs you can't speak on how I feel"..
"I hope games don't go into extras so I don't have to stay out in Wrigley longer"..
WHO in their right goddamn mind thinks these words, let alone says them out loud for people to hear him??
This "grown adult' is getting paid an assload of dough to play a game, be a role model, and be a professional. And this dumbass can't cover any of the bases.
Sure, if Soriano's swingin like that, he shouldnt be leadin off games and probably turn to softball.
Someone's still gotta tell @#$%udome to Americanize his swing.
And holy god, who woulda thought paying Kerry Wood more money would've been a good idea.
But chemistry's #1.. you have to like who you play with.

1) Soriano is very selfish and wants to hit a hr at every at bat. Joe Torre got rid of him. He has worn out his welcome in Chicago
2) Milton Bradley sucks- waive him now
3) The Tribune company gone will only be good for the world
4) @#$%udome is not Ichiro-not even close
5) Mike Fontenot cannot be a starter at 2nd base.
6) Aaron Miles sucked like he was a redbird spy
7) Soto was a one year wonder
8) Kevin Gregg was a joke from the start.
9) carlos Marmol has no control even though he is very tallented
10) Aaron Heilman was just as bad as he was with the Mets
Here is who should remain with the Cubs next year and deserve their checks:
Randy Wells
Ted Lilly
Carlos Zambrano
Reed Johnson
Koy Hill
Ryan Theriot
Derrick Lee
Sean Marshall
Jeff Baker
Aramis Rameriz

no way lou takes all the blame on this---last time i looked ,lou ,trammell, perry or joshua were hitting 3- 6 in the lineup, and i havent seen rothschild looking into the catcher for signs in the 7th 8th or 9th innings of close games.
soriano was signed with known positives and the known negatives--he is what they thought he would be----streaky----this years just been a total joke with his cold endless streaks---and to think hes 32?33? with 5 yrs left on a contract?
@#$%odome--big heart guy,has tried to adjust to the mlb game but really hes a platoon /4th of on a good/championship team.
bradley?---if anyone can find 1 and mean 1 analyst/announcer/writer who thought that he was the answer to any cub question, plz let me know.cubs again hoped for the best and so far havent got it from a oft-injured guy who appeared as a good teammate in the whole josh hamilton feelgood story of 2008.in my 30+yrs of watching baseball ive never seen a guy work so hard and try to look like a badass as he attempts to draw a walk as this guy.milt, its great that ur trying to get on base but i gotta believe u were envisioned as a power presence not a walk machine hitting in the 2 hole.
not quite sure what lou/hendry were thinking when they planned the whole 2nd base fiasco--aaron miles hasnt been cut yet?wow.fontenot obviously is way over his head(think the cubs were hoping for theriot part 2 at 2b).jeff baker actually played himself into the mix---isnt he like the 5th or 6th 2b this yr?
too bad big Z's melon isnt screwd on right, and ive been a defender of his,but u hear the stories of him not working hard on off days and not drinking enough h2o--cmon.
gregg appears to be one of those guys whos ok if doesnt have a flame to his ass like he has this yr,but his butt puckers a little too much to be a depenable closer, and, no,.woody had run his course with the cubs.
soto?-----was depended on for a 20/80/.280 season----but alas he took the good old rick wilkins fork in the road and.......whos knows maybe hes an even yr guy....2010?
and lets not forget,if u wouldve asked cub fans last yr,i bet alot wouldve said give rf to hoffpauir----and look what happened to him----fizzzle.
enough blame for everyone--------lous blamed for what ?sticking or not sticking with his players?stats showed last yr cubs were like .600 +winning % with soriano leading off..lou dropped him 6th and nothing helped...lou used the guy that he was given as closer in the closers role.his fault the guy sucks?he used the switch hitting bradley in the spot in the lineup that appered suited for and the guy lost all power stats.lous fault? soto tanked...lous fault...?2b fiascoo----lous fault?101 and counting.......
