Cubs manager Piniella: ‘Blame me’

  • Print

CHICAGO (AP)—Lou Piniella has offered himself up to critics looking to blame somebody for the Chicago Cubs’ disappointing season.

“Invariably, when things don’t go right, it’s always the manager’s fault,” Piniella said before the Cubs lost 5-4 to the Nationals on Thursday. “You want to blame me? Take your shots. It doesn’t bother me one bit, OK?”

Piniella, who led the Cubs to NL Central titles in each of his first two seasons—the first time they reached the postseason in consecutive years in a century—is under contract for 2010 and has said he expects to return.

The sale of the team was just announced, however, so there are many unanswered questions about the future—especially in light of the club’s mediocre performance this season. Chicago is nine games behind St. Louis in the Central and trails four others for the wild card.

“I’m the same manager … this year as I was last year as I was the year before. Same manager. No different,” Piniella said. “When you don’t win, somebody’s got to stand up and be the scapegoat. And if you all want to say it’s the manager, say it’s the manager.

“It’s fine with me.”

Still, he said he could only do so much for his club, which fell to 63-62 after Thursday’s loss. The Cubs dropped two of three to Washington, the worst team in the majors.

“I do the best I can every day; I can’t do any more,” said Piniella, who managed Cincinnati to the 1990 championship and won three division titles with Seattle.

“I let the players play,” he said. “It’s their game. It’s not my game, it’s not the coaches’ game, it’s not anybody else’s game. It’s the players’ game. All we can do is encourage them and give them an opportunity.

“I do care about wins and losses. I get hired to win baseball games. That’s my batting average, that’s my ERA,” Piniella added. “But … there are only so many things that I can do as a manager, and the rest of it is certainly not in my full control.”

That includes a roster that had significant turnover from last season, when the Cubs won 97 games before being swept out of the playoffs by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Leaders such as Kerry Wood(notes), Henry Blanco(notes) and Mark DeRosa(notes) weren’t retained. Additions included talented but temperamental right fielder Milton Bradley(notes) and failed closer Kevin Gregg(notes). In addition, several top players have performed below expectations and several have been injured.

“It hasn’t been one of our better mixes,” Piniella said. “Winning has a lot to do with chemistry. It makes the team come together a lot quicker. Remember, I told you all this spring we had a big turnover. Sometimes it takes a while. It doesn’t necessarily just fall in your lap.

“But yeah, this hasn’t been … one of my better-chemistry teams,” Piniella said.

Bradley, signed to a three-year, $30 million contract before the season, has struggled offensively most of the season. He also has had a shouting match with Piniella, has sparred with umpires and has gone at it with fans at Wrigley Field who have booed him. Earlier this week, he said many Cubs fans were “idiots” and full of “hatred.”

“Some people seem to think if I didn’t play baseball that I’d be collecting cans or something,” Bradley said Thursday after getting booed several times during an 0-for-5 afternoon.

“I’m a highly intelligent guy,” he said. “I chose to play baseball. … And unless you’ve been paid 30 million to play right field for the Chicago Cubs, then you can’t speak on how I might feel because you don’t know.”

A day earlier, he said he hoped games didn’t go into extra innings because he wanted to spend “the least amount of time as possible” at Wrigley.

Asked if he was upset when he read those comments, Piniella said: “Who needs … uh … we’ve had enough problems here with injuries and so forth that we don’t really need any more controversy of any sorts.”

Holliday and DeRosa are free agents. Holliday has already said he wants to test the market. DeRosa hasn't done much for the Cards, and Pienero is a free agent, and has been one of their best pitchers. They will have to pay him a lot to keep him, which makes it harder to sign either Holliday and DeRosa, or both.

Thanks for the line-up compliment. Perhaps you're right to say that Marmol and Dempster should stay on for the 2010 regular season. I think Marmol and Dempster could improve tremendously if the NEW! Cubs GM would try and sign on Maddux as the new Cubs pitching instructor. Also, I agree maybe it is a good idea to make Fox our new first string catcher, he is a big guy and would be able to block home base when needed.
However, I don't think the Birds are about to give up Holliday or DeRo anytime soon, but yes it would be great if the new Cubs owner could swing such a miraculous trade. Anyway... Go Pinella Go, hey Chicago whadda you say the Cubs will come back to win in a 2010 day.

Susan M, is it too much to ask for a bit of respect or coutesy when posting on another teams board? see my comments on Cards Team Report as a guide. i have never "rubbed it in cards faces" thru 07 & 08... u should try it. Cards have the better team, made the moves, but Cubs "gave the Div to Cards". we were tied 'bout 3 weeks ago, if all continued as it was, still tied. no, cubs falling flat on faces gave cards Div. w/o our "help", still tied. Good Luck in Playoffs, LA fans gettin on my nerves... remember, we should lead by example, eh? you really wouldn't want 300,000 cub fans rubbin it in on CARDS board if situation reverses in a yr or 2, rite? have a good day

Oops my bad, Derosa came from Cleveland, But hey keep your crappy players and you will keep having crappy seasons. Zambrano acts like a 2 yr old with his tantrums and Bradley calls the fans racists. Keep the Days of Our Lives up there we dont want any. The Cards have all but eliminated the Cubs and its still August.

Shambles I like the list, but I would add Dempster & Marmol. Dempster should go back into the bullpen though. I am still willing to give Marmol a chance as the closer. Fox needs to go back to catching. I would also like to see them bring in Holliday, DeRosa, and Crawford. That would be a solid clubhouse, and a balanced line-up top to bottom.

    My picks for next year to stay on with the Cubs;
    1. Derrick Lee
    2. Aramis Ramirez
    3. Randy Wells
    4. Reed Johnson
    5. Jeff Baker
    6. K. @#$%edome
    7. Hoff (sp.)
    8. The Big Bad Fox
    9. Mr. Fuld
    10. Mr.Grabow
    11. Mr. Lilly
    12. Mr. Trammel as the new Cub Manager in 2010

Take a loss get rid of Zambrano (for his childish and demoralizing stupid attitude), Bradley (for being a big jerk), Soriano (for always being a whiner) and Soto (for being a careless lard-butt like Zambrano).

As far as the other present members (players and couches), of the Cubs MLB team are concerned, sorry but you guys should pack up too. Why? because you guys lack the consistency the team needs to stay on top of the central division and the tenacity it takes to get to the playoffs and win the NL pennant to go on the the WS championship competition.

Next year Rickett should invest some money and negotiate for quality veteran pitchers like Halladay from the Bluejays, a comprable quality veteran short-stop player, and two quality veteran catchers. Don't short change the critical positions and keep the present Cubs players that I mentioned above and what you have now are the 2010 MLB World Series Champions

#53 &#54 "Mark D"...no wonder yer a "cards fan on a Cubs board", cards fans likely embarrassed by ur lack of class too! i know some good card fans, shall we check cards boards for ur posts? doubtful, ur a jump on fan and a cub basher...no MLB knowledge...shoo Deadbird fan shoo! As for cubs, no, i don't believe Bob Brenley ever managed cubs, tho a decent "voice", i don't see him as mgr, i think it woulda already happened. IMHO, Sandberg not ready, yet. Trammel a decent choice but think he did a cubs stint... coulda had Girardi, but i can't tell if its him or his $$$$$ payroll gettin it done... Steve Stone (IMO) is the most knowledgable MLB man out there, but wants to own a team, not manage. I would kill to see Maddox replace Rothchild, whom has repeatedly shown he can't get us anywhere but close...Duncan is better on a consistant basis. I personally have no problem blaming Lou for HIS PART in this wreck, especially where he chooses to "play his vets"...the ppl who let us drop, like a rock, outta 1st in bout 3 weeks?! So, there's alot of unknowns for next year, and, barring big salary-eating moves for cubs, i aint hopeful.

The main problem as I see it, is the pitching coach. Rothschild has no clue, and I can't understand why Lou keeps him around. I know the are friends, but come on. Steve Stone or Greg Maddox would make good pitching coaches, and have real major league experience. Marmol, Big Z, and the new pitchers would really benefit from a good pitching coach. Of course Heilman and Gregg can't pitch at all and its time for them to go.

Brenley is interesting, but didn't he already manage the Cubs once. I do not remember that working out well. Sandberg may be the people's choice, but I never remember Sandberg being a big motivator. I would like to see someone like Grace, and Sutcliffe, but I don't think either have coaching aspirations. So i think the best choice would be Trammell. He has experience and knows the team. He is younger than Lou, and may be more willing to play younger players.

For those of you who say get rid of Lou, one interesting topic that hasn't been discussed much is who will take his job. specifically, the undertalked about Bob Brenley. this is a guy who has won a world series, has watched this team develope (or regress) for several years, and knows the players well. does the job go to him, Ryne Sandberg or someone completely different? just curious to hear peoples thoughts.

Soriano always comes up with an injury when he is a slump. Remember the finger injury? He actually was hot for about week during that period. As soon as he cooled off again this knee injury came up. Zambrano's injury is a joke. If he was really hurt he wouldn't be taking batting practice. Using the DL to explain why this team has under achieved does not fly with me either. Despite all the injuries they were still in first a month ago. The team flat out quit.

lou is correct in as much as he can't pitch or hit for this team, but what he can do and should do is get off his ass and confront some of these horrible calls made by umps this season, and there have been plenty of them. yesterdays dee lee being called out at home when he clearly wasn't resulted in the game not being tied. how about the call when @#$%udome was sitting on 2nd base and the ball was 10 feet from 2nd base airborne. @#$%udome was called out (force out). where was lou? there have been other controversial calls as well...i'd swear these umps work for the nba. lou, are you just getting old and mellow or don't you care? also lou, pull a player out for failing to hustle. fans are forgiving if they see a genuine effort being made even in the event of not succeeding.

milton bradley, you're a overpaid underachieving crybaby. no wonder you never stay with a ballclub. what general manager would want bradley after the 30 million has been paid out?

sorriano, if your knee is too whacked out, stop hopping around the outfield each time you attempt to field your position. you look retarded. and quit standing in the batters box after those rare occassions when you do get a hit. RUN! let the fans be the spectators. if you are so vain that you must watch, tape the game and watch it later.

soto, put the pot smoking behind you and play to your capabilities. and don't be such a dumbass to do drugs again.

Sorry Big Bad, but a true Chicago Cubs fan would not cheer for this team, unless you like to get stepped on in life. Stand up for yourself already and show some pride. Just cuz they are the Cubbies and you are a fan, doesn't mean you have to accept everything they do. I totally agree with whoever said to move the park, that is a great idea. That way the true fans can make a decision on whether they have to make a trek out to the game, instread of all these kids just hittin up Wrigleyville, not even caring who the hell the Cubs are playing. World's largest beer garden is right. It's a 'scene'. I was actually at a game once and 3 girls were all sitting in front of me, just gabbing on and on about crap, not even looking at the field. Then literally in inning 4, one of the girls goes, "oh my God ! the game started already !? " Epic fail.

Dgodinez, obviously you're a black guy defending your brother.
They boo and heckle Bradley, not because Wrigleys filled with a pile of drunken, rowdy caucasions.
But because he's making 30 mil to not produce and cry like a little babyback @#$%.
This guy is literally, the worst possible acquisition the Cubs could've pulled off.
Not only on paper, but he's managed to destroy a good piece of what was a decent chemistry beforehand.
"unless you get paid $30million to play RF for the cubs you can't speak on how I feel"..
"I hope games don't go into extras so I don't have to stay out in Wrigley longer"..
WHO in their right goddamn mind thinks these words, let alone says them out loud for people to hear him??
This "grown adult' is getting paid an assload of dough to play a game, be a role model, and be a professional. And this dumbass can't cover any of the bases.
Sure, if Soriano's swingin like that, he shouldnt be leadin off games and probably turn to softball.
Someone's still gotta tell @#$%udome to Americanize his swing.
And holy god, who woulda thought paying Kerry Wood more money would've been a good idea.
But chemistry's #1.. you have to like who you play with.

Cut the crap. Blaming you is like blaming the President for Hurricane damage. Is it your fault 3/5ths of your starting rotation went through extended d/l down time and your 3rd baseman was gone for half a year? Look at the Mets. They couldn't compete with injuries either. Is it also your fault a few players picked '09 to go in the tank? NO. They will do better next year but things just didn't pan out and crucial extended injuries were a dominant factor. It's happened before and will happen again to someone else and that's a baseball guarantee. Just look at the encyclopedia. You're at the helm and like a dedicated skipper you take the brunt but it's not the case here. St. Louis had the extra pitching shot in the arm with the resurgance of the 14-3 Chris Carpenter and that's obviously what put them over the top. Had he not been there the replacements might have been 6-11 or worse and they would have been a slightly above .500 club. Go for 3 straight years above .500 years. It hasn't been done in decades in Chicago. Look forward to '10 and better things.

Hey Big bad/ I would agree with your list up until keeping Big Lazzzzzzzzzzy.. Zambrano has to go. I do not want guys on my team that think it is cute to be lazy. It seems like the attitude of the whole team. They need to get rid of guys with that attitude, because it is contagious. Look how this team has played. Soto is still smoking the cheeba. He has no emotion, and walks like he is in a daze. Drop that junkie too....... I like Lou, and wish this team could play inspiring baseball, but I do not think anyone cares. I believe Lou cares but he has given up on this team like the rest of us. I don't blame him, but cleaning house means he has to go too.

Here is what is wrong with the Cubs.
    1) Soriano is very selfish and wants to hit a hr at every at bat. Joe Torre got rid of him. He has worn out his welcome in Chicago
    2) Milton Bradley sucks- waive him now
    3) The Tribune company gone will only be good for the world
    4) @#$%udome is not Ichiro-not even close
    5) Mike Fontenot cannot be a starter at 2nd base.
    6) Aaron Miles sucked like he was a redbird spy
    7) Soto was a one year wonder
    8) Kevin Gregg was a joke from the start.
    9) carlos Marmol has no control even though he is very tallented
    10) Aaron Heilman was just as bad as he was with the Mets
Here is who should remain with the Cubs next year and deserve their checks:
    Randy Wells
    Ted Lilly
    Carlos Zambrano
    Reed Johnson
    Koy Hill
    Ryan Theriot
    Derrick Lee
    Sean Marshall

This is just a lousy team, pure and simple. I have been a Cubs fan for 50 years so no one needs to call me out for not being a 'true' Cubs fan if they don't agree with me. Everyone talks about DeRosa being traded and I agree that is a major factor in the downfall of this team. Another player that is missing and is totally forgotten is Jim Edmonds. Things may have been different with Edmonds in center and @#$%udome in right as opposed to @#$%udome and Bradley. @#$%udome isn't great by any means but Bradley was just a STUPID baseball decision. A good housecleaning is needed including cleaning THE HOUSE. Yankee Stadium can be torn down .. so can Wrigley Field. It is an obsolete park that has outlived its' usefullness. I am NOT saying that Wrigley Field is why the Cubs can't win, but it is a major reason why they don't have to win. Even if the new owners do a major rehab on Wrigley.. it will still be the largest singles bar in the world located in one of the most popular neighborhoods in Chicago. Build a new park in the suburbs where fans will go if the product is good .. not because they plan on going to the bar after the game.

ask lou and hendry and i guarantee you that they had thought they had built a team that was going to the playoffs at least as the wildcard.but as jerry krause once said"organizations build championships",something this one obviously hasnt.
no way lou takes all the blame on this---last time i looked ,lou ,trammell, perry or joshua were hitting 3- 6 in the lineup, and i havent seen rothschild looking into the catcher for signs in the 7th 8th or 9th innings of close games.
soriano was signed with known positives and the known negatives--he is what they thought he would be----streaky----this years just been a total joke with his cold endless streaks---and to think hes 32?33? with 5 yrs left on a contract?
@#$%odome--big heart guy,has tried to adjust to the mlb game but really hes a platoon /4th of on a good/championship team.
bradley?---if anyone can find 1 and mean 1 analyst/announcer/writer who thought that he was the answer to any cub question, plz let me know.cubs again hoped for the best and so far havent got it from a oft-injured guy who appeared as a good teammate in the whole josh hamilton feelgood story of 2008.in my 30+yrs of watching baseball ive never seen a guy work so hard and try to look like a badass as he attempts to draw a walk as this guy.milt, its great that ur trying to get on base but i gotta believe u were envisioned as a power presence not a walk machine hitting in the 2 hole.
not quite sure what lou/hendry were thinking when they planned the whole 2nd base fiasco--aaron miles hasnt been cut yet?wow.fontenot obviously is way over his head(think the cubs were hoping for theriot part 2 at 2b).jeff baker actually played himself into the mix---isnt he like the 5th or 6th 2b this yr?
too bad big Z's melon isnt screwd on right, and ive been a defender of his,but u hear the stories of him not working hard on off days and not drinking enough h2o--cmon.
gregg appears to be one of those guys whos ok if doesnt have a flame to his ass like he has this yr,but his butt puckers a little too much to be a depenable closer, and, no,.woody had run his course with the cubs.
soto?-----was depended on for a 20/80/.280 season----but alas he took the good old rick wilkins fork in the road and.......whos knows maybe hes an even yr guy....2010?
and lets not forget,if u wouldve asked cub fans last yr,i bet alot wouldve said give rf to hoffpauir----and look what happened to him----fizzzle.
enough blame for everyone--------lous blamed for what ?sticking or not sticking with his players?stats showed last yr cubs were like .600 +winning % with soriano leading off..lou dropped him 6th and nothing helped...lou used the guy that he was given as closer in the closers role.his fault the guy sucks?he used the switch hitting bradley in the spot in the lineup that appered suited for and the guy lost all power stats.lous fault? soto tanked...lous fault...?2b fiascoo----lous fault?101 and counting.......
