Chicago Cubs to skip Rich Harden’s turn

CHICAGO (AP)—The Cubs’ Rich Harden(notes) will be replaced in the rotation for at least one start

Manager Lou Piniella said Tom Gorzelanny(notes) will start in Harden’s place Monday when the Cubs play at Milwaukee. He said Gorzelanny may also start on Sept. 26 at San Francisco in place of Harden, who has struggled with high pitch counts and failed to make it past the fifth inning in his last four starts.

Eligible for free agency after the World Series, Harden lasted three innings Wednesday night against the Milwaukee Brewers. He is 9-9 with a 4.09 ERA in 26 starts.

I like Harden but I don't think he'll ever be able to remain healthy for an entire season, the same problem we had with Mark Prior. It's time to let him go.

Get rid of Aaron Miles I really don't know why they ever got him the off season. Also get rid of Kevin Greg, and in the off season work with Carlos Marmol he will be a good closer if he throw strikes . Also keep John Grabow and Tom Gorzelanny. The only other person I would consider getting rid of is Milton Bradley. Also the Cubs should of never traded Mark DeRosa because he can play left fied, right field, short stop, 2nd base, 3rd base and can hit.

Listen, Lou needs to sit down with each player and ask them to be as open about their problems, production and potential as he is and really dialog their future with the Cubs.
There's a lot pf air clearing needs to be done. If Harden can be taught a 3rd pitch then Soriano can be given a special Coach and taught Leadoff.
Worse crap I think was getting Milton Bradley who proved he's a whiner and also, while not publicly, made the rest of the team look to an outside cause when the problems in all of them.
The Cubs had the power to man-up and save this season but haven't and won't.
It's what's so frustrating about them, unlike other successful teams who build on their last good year and get better the Cubs take a playoff year and SUCK the following year.

On the WGN broadcast last night, they mentioned Harden was considering trying to learn a third pitch (he's basically fastball/changeup right now) that he can pitch to contact to try and get fast outs early in counts. If he actually does this, I think he'll be a valuable pitcher in 2010.

I'd offer Harden arbitration, and if he accepts, I'd put him to work right away on learning a third pitch.

Let him go, we already have an expensive pitcher who can't get past the 5th inning. I wish Pinella would make good on his threat and just leave big Z on the mound

Harden is damaged goods. Cut your losses and let him walk at the end of the year. Trade Zambrano, Soriano, and Bradley. Also, trade Jake Fox. He doesn't help the Cubs sitting on the bench. Trade him in the off season. He is a good bargaining chip. Package him with one of the aforementioned bums.

Good thing the Twins didn't trade for him off the waiver wire... Pavano in Sept - 3.77 1-1 19.1IP; Harden in Sept - 3.00 1-1 12IP - in the same number of starts and probably injured.

And the biggest plus - the Twins rookie starters have stepped up

If the Cubs resign him next year, I say make him one of those relievers we haven't seen much of in the past few years -- the 2+ inning closer.

Starters don't seem to be the problem...no mid-relief/very questionable "closer" and who thought this cubs team wouldn't be able to put up 5+ runs/gm? Lee, Aram, Bradley, Soriano, Soto & Cubbies really struggling to put up 2,3,4 runs? c'mon...named players should alone be able to put up 5/gm! bats are cold. Don't like Soriano leading off...yet who else? the riot??? Soriano often seems like he's "batting blindfolded": swings 6-8" off plate, lets the "down low strike" (his favorite) whiz by w/o a swing?! Marmol looks lost out there & cold bats & sloppy relief may soon "get in Wells head"...kid is pitching his guts out! Fortunatly, Brewers, Cards & Cinci "doing as expected" to keep Cubbies close! All should be clear btwn break & end of July.

Starting pitching doesn't seem to be the problem this year. The offense needs a spark, a catalyst, a player to step up get on folks for not putting out 100%. They just seem to be in a fog and the bullpen ain't helpin'.

"Harden has been on two stints on the disabled list in as many seasons with the Cubs. The 27-year-old came to Chicago before the 2008 season then strained his right shoulder and was out from April 3-May 11."

ummm yahoo get your facts straight. Harden was traded to the Cubs after CC was traded to the Brewers. Once again Yahoo Sports sucks.

He's 9-3 as a Cub and duplicating that down the stretch would be just what the doctor ordered. He rarely makes it through a full season but he's always a winner when he's in there. 45-22 says it all & @ only 27, he has plenty of baseball in front of him. Good pitcher.
