Pujols: ‘I want to be a Cardinal’

  • Print

ST. LOUIS (AP)—Calm down, Cardinal fans: Albert Pujols(notes) wants to stay in St. Louis.

“The fans know and the Cardinals know that I want to be a Cardinal for my whole career,” Pujols told WXOS-FM on Thursday. “I love this city. The way that this city has embraced me and my family.”

Pujols, who has one year left on his contract plus an option year, raised some eyebrows with his comments during an interview with a Dominican radio station earlier this month.

“I’m not desperate to sign a contract extension. I still have one year remaining in my contract for 2010 and a club option for 2011. I leave the rest in God’s hands,” Pujols told CDN 92.5 FM.

The two-time NL MVP said he wanted the Cardinals to concentrate on signing Matt Holiday and other free agents first.

On Thursday, he reiterated that there is no rush but “if they come tomorrow and say ‘Albert, you know, we want to lock you up,’ hey they know that we’re open to that.”

Pujols also praised the hiring of Mark McGwire as the team’s new hitting instructor. Manager Tony La Russa said he talked to Pujols about McGwire before hiring the former home run champion.

McGwire has no coaching experience but Pujols said that wasn’t necessary. The 46-year-old McGwire has worked in the offseason in past years with several major league hitters, including Holliday and Skip Schumaker(notes) of the Cardinals.

“He’s going to teach guys how to play the game. He’s going to say to the guys, ‘This is what I have to offer you,’ and hopefully they’ll put it together and hopefully it will work,” Pujols said. “I’m looking forward to that, knowing he’s going to bring that hitting experience into the organization and hopefully we’ll learn.”

    PJ -

No evidence that McGuire did anything except Andro - available at GNC at the time and in plain sight.
Sure its possible he did more - until I have more proof than a jealous slugger I will stay with Andro only.
Face it can you picture MM bending over and letting anyone stick him in the butt??? I sure can't

Depsite the rep for being surly, he was actually a good guy. who else would walk away with a 30M contract in their drawer, sure not the people you compare him with. No relationship to anyone on that list

Peter Joachim - Is that your first name or a description?

You do realize your list is missing alot of names. Right? So many that it invalidates any point that you think you are making.

You obviously care so much about justice that you cast stones at Albert with no evidence. None that was ever found in the many tests he has taken. But you know better, right?

I know I'm wasting my time with a simpleton such as you but perhaps you should extract your cranium from your rectum then try again.

Dave Duncan is a nice guy coach....very good with pitchers as the record shows. I think the reason that he is a good pitching coach is because he was trained when a receiver for one of the best pitching staffs ever assembled in the American League....that's early 1970's fact stuff for you Mean1. Pitchers always have the advantage where coaching is concerned......catchers lack a number of physical and mental skills to be able to address pitching...just can't be done....that is why catchers sit where they sit...otherwise they would pitch.......successful teams allow.pitchers run ball games not catchers....just watch the good ones....they consistently direct catchers.........a great recent example was Cliff Lee just finished handcuffing the Yankees...it was all Cliff baby...............I think former catchers sometimes can be successful managers depending on team talent and the level of day to day team oversight an owner might have.....

atthehop - You explained exactly why Pujols won't be wearing pinstripes any time soon. Pujols is an excellent firstbaseman and it is very doubtful that he would sign with a team to be a DH. Like Teixeira, Pujols is not only a great hitter, but a Gold Glove firstbaseman. He will sign at least one more long term deal with the Cards.

Pujols will be a Yankee, but he will only be a DH in the American League. He is not as good a first baseman as TEX. Let's not forget, every major league ballplayer wants to be a Yankee....Go Yankees...

Hey, JD, no one is forcing you to be at this board. Why are you here if you can't stand to hear about Pujols? Seems like the wromg place to be. Maybe you should just take a break from your computer and tv. Like it or not, news about Pujols is here to stay. And I for one welcome it.

JD, true St. Louisans LOVE Ryan Howard!! Heck, he grew up right here and we enjoyed watching him play his High School, American Legion and College ball here. No argument from me about his abilities, but Pujols had just as good of a record as Ryan in the post season. He has helped bring the Cards to the WS twice, winning once. He has helped get them to the post season six times in his nine years. If the Phillies can win the Series this year then he will be one up on Pujols in that department, but if you really think Pujols is a loser, then you need you head examined.

Who are you Peter?? Why do you hate on those who are in sports?? I guess you have some issues with people who are better than you in all ways. They are bigger, stronger, faster, better athletes, probably better looking, and they have to be gramatically better. Keep your comments to yourself until you find any type of proof.

is this a joke jd? ryan howard is the strike out king of the major leagues. a good left-hander will get howard out every single time. the cards rode pujols all the way through the 06 World Series wins!! the only thing he does is produce runs. plus pujols is a classy guy. donates more time and money than almost all professional athletes

Hey JD. Pujols goes "no where" in the postseason? Have you forgotten about his 2006 World Series Championship?

And your comparison to Ryan Howard is quite pathetic really. Pujols owns Howard in Avg. OBP, SLG, and OPS over his career.

get back to me when Howard hits "40 home runs and 130 RBIS" while batting .333.
    Laser pointing punk.

Screw Pujols...I'm so sick of hearing about this loser, especially since he goes NO WHERE once it is time for the post season while my boy Ryan Howard continually puts up 40HR and 130RBI and plays MVP-level in the post-season....yet still gets ignored.

I guess those Downsyndrome ads Pujols does really must matter to someone...

The story that Albert wants to remain a Cardinal isn't really news at all. He has been consistant about the issue for several seasons now. Still it's nice to hear him say it again. I just hope the Card's can figure out that no price is too high to pay him. He deserves every bit of $25M per season, and $30M wouldn't be too much for him IMO. The organization can afford it, can they afford not to pay it? Seriously, who wants to watch the Redbirds without Albert? I will but I don't want to. He is this generation's greatest player, period. I can truly understand how so many people can automatically assume he is on steroids, so many of the great power hitters are. But he isn't just a power hitter, he also hit's for a high average. A career batting average of .334 places him tied for 17th all time(that's higher than Ichiro's .333) There is a short list of power hitters that can claim a batting average that high or higher. Ted Williams, Lou Gehrig, and guy they called Babe Ruth. I don't hear anyone claiming these immortal players numbers were somehow artificially enhanced, so let's face it, Albert's numbers are legitimate. If he were on steroids, they would be simply ridiculous. He has never had a 50 home run season, I think that with his hitting ability an enhanced Pujols would have had multiple 50, 60, or even 70 HR seasons. His actions on and off the feild make him admirable by anyone's standards, so let's take him at his word. Oh, another little bit of food for thought, A-Rod, Ortiz, Manny, they used and they got busted, I think if Albert were using he would have been busted by now as well. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but seriously do the math before you make your mind up about him.

To those who claim that McGwire can't be a hitting coach because his career average was only .263 and he struck out a lot (as nearly all sluggers do):

Dave Duncan never pitched a single inning in his career, yet he is widely considered to be one of the best pitching coaches in the game, and his record of success is undeniable.

Tony LaRussa was a career .199 hitter for losing teams who never played a full season in a six-year career, yet he has somehow become the winningest active manager in baseball and is third on the all-time wins list.

Whether or not McGwire will be a successful coach remains to be seen, but you can hardly say he will fail before he even coaches one game. Success (or the lack of it) as a player doesn't always mean much when it comes to coaching.

    good morning cardinal nation
1st a salute to the return of mac back into the fold which generate the thoughts of timelyhitting and run production. I know luddie and yaddy will benefit and colby will explode with such tutelage, now with that being said I think our #1 priority should be a couple of 7-8 inning studs to go along with carp, adam, and joel and dunc will do the rest.

Albert doesn't have to answer or prove anything to anyone. I read his interview in Sports Illustrated. He said that he would not use steriods because he would have to answer to God and he could not hide it from God.

He is an awesome specimen. A few years ago Muscle Digest had a reporter go down to the Dominican Republic during the off-season to watch and report on his routine for a few weeks. His workout regimen is awesome. He lifts weights and does aerobics for 3-4 hours six days a week and hired a full-time personal trainer and a full-time nutritionist. I knew a weightlifter who was 5"10" and weighed 200 pounds. The guy had massive muscles mass and was very athletic. He went to weightlifting competitions, but only if they did testing. He said he couldn't get in the top ten in competitions were they did not test, but could finish second or third if they did test. If you did not know him and just saw him, most idiots would automaticlly think Steriods, but you can get a superior body without the chemicals, you just need to eat right, workout like a maniac, and get enough sleep.

Finally, Albert is one of the greatest players ever, and any fool that thinks he wants to leave the greatest baseball city in America for the filth of NY or LA are out of their frickin' minds.
