Brewers decline option on RHP David Weathers

MILWAUKEE (AP)—The Milwaukee Brewers have declined a $3.7 million club option on right-handed reliever David Weathers(notes) for next season.

Weathers arrived in Milwaukee in a trade with Cincinnati in August and went 1-3 with a 4.88 ERA the rest of the year. He gets a $400,000 buyout and becomes eligible for free agency.

The Brewers also are weighing a decision on exercising a 2010 option on starter Braden Looper(notes), who went 14-7 with a 5.22 ERA last season.

Looper’s 2010 option is for $6.5 million with a $1 million buyout because he pitched more than 180 innings last season. If Milwaukee exercises the option, Looper has the right to decline it but he would forfeit the buyout.

David Weathers may be 40 but he can still pitch and it is remarkable that a hold over from the '96 series is still active and should continue to be next year.

ok I can see where what I typed is unclear....I meant that the ERA should be less than half of the millions you fork out

6.5 million...no way. A good rule of thumb, never pay less than double in millions of what the pitcher's ERA was the previous season.
