Brewers, Hoffman announce 1-year deal

  • Print

MILWAUKEE (AP)—The Brewers have announced an $8 million, one-year contract with career saves leader Trevor Hoffman(notes) with a mutual option for 2011.

General manager Doug Melvin says Hoffman is concerned about winning, not about individual numbers, and that the club is thrilled to have him back.

Hoffman signed with the Brewers before the beginning of the year after spending 16 seasons in San Diego. He converted 37 of 41 save chances to give him 591 for his career, and finished the season with a 1.83 ERA, his lowest since 1998.

The veteran right-hander will turn 42 next week.

The option year could be worth up to $8.5 million, depending on how many games Hoffman finishes. It has a $500,000 buyout that would increase to $1 million if he closes 40 games.

#67 Texas_Hurricane - I don't think you know what you're talking about - probably never been to a game in Milwaukee, have you?

Went to 3 games this year - most expensive was $40 for club tickets - otherwise always less than 30. Whatever you want to drink is expensive, but under $7 - and if you bring it in plastic bottles in a soft sided cooler, you can take your own soft drinks into the game. If I recall correctly, nothing on the food menu is over $9 - and again, put it in a soft sided cooler (which will keep warm food warm, too) and bring your own if you like.

Yes, the game is expensive. But only as expensive as you make it.

And until you know what you are talking about, you are the idiot for spouting off.

"For a team that doesn't have a lot of extra cash, needs to re-sign Prince and needs some more starting pitching, don't know if $8M on your closer is the best way to spend your money"

Prince has another year under contract and one more year of arbitration. This deal will not affect the signing or trading of fielder.

He is a beast. I used to be a batboy for a minor league team he played for and the dude throws hard. At the time he was a shortstop and played 3rd base as well and I have never seen anyone throw as hard. (he was still in the reds farm system) I was in high school at the time and was a batboy and worked in the ticket booth played. I used to catch with them during BP etc and he used to blister my hand more than the pitchers would. One of the nicest guys you could ever meet

Smart move Brew Crew but I'd add a few option years into the equation. He's obviously not finished and has some quality time left. 600 is closing in fast and 700 isn't that much further the way he piles them up.

    Hey Detty

Your post, #51 - yes, you are right. BUT, the earlier posts you are refering to that say Hoffman is going are from August, when Hoffman, like most veterans on non-playoff contending teams, was put on waivers and someone had claimed him. However, the Brewers wisely exercised their right to retain him instead.

Mariano Rivera had 19 saves by protecting a 3 run lead for 3 outs. Save rules are a croc of Sh*t.
He also had 4 saves by getting 3 outs with a 4 run lead. Those are NOT saves even by the twisted current criteria. Rivera didn't pitch more than 70 innings & had about 72-73 strikeouts. BFD!
Many relief pitchers had year after year where they pitched 120+ innings & struck out 120- 150.

I am 60 years old & could do what Rivera does! Old school closers only got saves if the tying run got into scoring position. And relief pictures most often entered games in the 7th or 8th inning with runners already on in scoring position. Those were real saves.

And yet, some dingbats in the media vote for closers that pitch 65-80 innings for the Cy & for MVP. WTF?

So did I read the article wrong or does it not say that Hoffman has already signed a contract with Milwaukee? If my knowledge of baseball is still firm I would have to say that once a player signs a contract no other team can...as you all seem to phrase it...'pick him up' as if he was placed on waivers or something. READ THE ARTICLE!

I like the offense the Brewers finished with. They could score runs. The problem was, they had to score 6 or more runs to win games and that is crap. Starting pitching wasn't just bad, it was horrible. It's time to part ways with Jeff Suppan and Dave Bush. Neither is consistent enough. A hot little streak doesn't justify blowing all the other games, if they can even stay healthy. Gallardo is good, but not yet an ace. We need two ace starters and we'll be right there in the playoff hunt. If Weeks comes back in good form, and we gain two top tier starters, next season will be a lot of fun.

I'm happy for Trevor. As a Padre fan I'm glad things are going well for him. Mariano Rivera gets so much love all the time and rightfully so but I think Trevor deserves more attention for the job hes done as well. I mean this guy has been lights out for the past 15 years or so. Ya, he doesnt have the postseason track record of rivera but that has more to do with the teams he's played for then his own personal merits. Can't wait to see him in the HOF!
