Hudson agrees on $28M, 3-year deal with Braves

  • Print

ATLANTA (AP)—Tim Hudson(notes) agreed to a $28 million, three-year contract with the Atlanta Braves on Thursday, giving the team a wealth of starting pitching and setting up a likely trade to bolster the offense.

Hudson could have returned to the Braves under a $12 million option, but the sides focused on a longer deal after the right-hander showed he had overcome major elbow surgery.

His new deal calls for salaries of $9 million in each of the next three seasons, and the Braves get a $9 million club option for 2013 with a $1 million buyout. If Hudson pitches at least 600 innings over the next three seasons, he would receive a $500,000 bonus after the 2012 season.

The 34-year-old grew up in neighboring Alabama and said all along he was willing to give the Braves a discount to remain close to home. The agreement was reached quickly after the team completed its postseason organizational meetings.

The pitcher said it actually took longer to schedule a physical and set up insurance for the new contract than the actual negotiations.

“I did all I could do to get healthy and show them they could have confidence in me,” said Hudson, who returned to start seven games late in the season after missing a full year. “They came to me with an opening offer than was more than fair. They showed me they really wanted to get something done, as did I.”

The Braves now have six starters under contract for next season: Hudson, Javier Vazquez(notes), Jair Jurrjens(notes), Tommy Hanson(notes), Derek Lowe(notes) and Kenshin Kawakami(notes).

Jurrjens (14-10, 2.60 ERA) and Hanson (11-4, 2.89), both 23, are the long-term cornerstones of the staff and Vazquez is coming off one of the best seasons (15-10, 2.87) of his career. Vazquez, who is heading into the final year of his contract, might be the most attractive pitcher in a trade since Lowe (15-10, 4.67) and Kawakami (7-12, 3.86) are both in the middle of expensive, long-term deals.

“We felt like the strength of our ballclub was the starting rotation, and we wanted to continue to have that as our strength,” general manager Frank Wren said. “Now we have the ability to go out and continue to mold our ballclub. Quite frankly, I don’t know what it’s going to look like on opening day, but it’s starting to take form. This is the first step.”

The Braves ranked third in the NL with a 3.57 ERA, while the offense improved after Wren made trades for first baseman Adam LaRoche(notes) and center fielder Nate McLouth(notes). But LaRoche is a free agent and the team may be reluctant to sign him to a long-term deal with top prospect Freddie Freeman close to being ready for the big leagues.

The outfield also needs an upgrade. Left fielder Garret Anderson(notes) is a free agent and unlikely to return, while Wren must weigh any moves with an eye toward making room for the team’s best prospect, outfielder Jason Heyward, who could make the jump to the big leagues as soon as next season.

Then there’s the bullpen: co-closers Rafael Soriano(notes) and Mike Gonzalez(notes) have both filed for free agency; the team would like to bring at least one of them back.

“This does give us depth and strength in one area of our club and allows us to have flexibility to do other things now,” Wren said. “We’re a work in progress.”

Hudson, a former 20-game winner in Oakland, was the ace of the Braves’ staff until he tore up his elbow during the 2008 season. He underwent Tommy John ligament replacement surgery and was out for a full year.

But he returned at the end of this past season to go 2-1 with a 3.61 ERA in his seven starts, proving to the Braves that his right elbow would be at full strength in 2010.

“I’ll tell you what, man, it feels really, really good,” said Hudson, who recently began his offseason conditioning program. “It feels just as normal as my left elbow. I didn’t think I would ever be able to say that.”

Hudson, who was part of a rotation in Oakland that included Barry Zito(notes) and Mark Mulder(notes), believes the Braves have a chance to be even better with Jurrjens and Hanson leading the way.

“J.J. and Tommy are two of the best young pitchers I’ve seen in a long time,” Hudson said. “I’m willing to say this is by far the best staff I’ve been on in my big league career. We have some great pitchers who can go out there and give us a great chance to win every time.”

Hudson also looks forward to being around for Bobby Cox’s last season as manager. He has already said that he’ll move into an advisory role with the team after one more year in the dugout.

“He deserves a great season, if not a championship season,” Hudson said. “He’s such a pleasure to play for. We’re going to go out there and give it all we’ve got.”

#54 I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Schafer only started about 1 game in the leadoff spot. He spent his whole time in the #8 spot and got hurt the 2nd week of the season which is a big reason his average was where it was.

Having six starters is not necessarily a bad situation because more than likely one of the six will either get injured or perform below expectations. Hanson and JJ aren't making the big bucks yet so they aren't expensive to carry. K.K. didn't look great as a starter but did okay in the bullpen, so perhaps having him start the season in the bullpen and ready to take over as a starter when necessary would be a good move. The Braves have insurance on Hudson, so if he gets disabled again, they shouldn't have to eat his entire contract. Garrett Anderson will be gone as a free agent and I believe that Matt Diaz has proven that he deserves the left field position. A healthy McLouth should do a good job in center and is capable of hitting 25+ HRs. Kelly Johnson has been inconsistent and Norton was never any help. Laroche will be expensive to resign and he often struggles the first half of the season. If Prado plays third and Infante plays second, then Chipper could move to first base if Adam leaves. If both Soriano and Gonzo leaves then we will need a closer unless it's Moylan. Hanson would make a great closer if he wasn't needed as a starter.

What you need is Ryan Howard from Philadelphia, and Hudson is a free agent middle infielder that improves the defence.

66 you really think that Selig can just snap his fingers and institute a salary cap? Ever hear of something called a players union? Or a collective barganing agreement?

I love it when stupid people comment on things they know absolutely nothing about.

That's good. Hope several other players decide to stay loyal to there teams and not be bought out by by the crankees. The crankees are ruining baseball by there consistant attempts at buying the title. They succeeded this year because they spent over 800 millions dollars on free agents the past two winters. Thats more than the whole payrolls for several teams combined. It's hideous that Selig won't put a salary cap in place and allows this to take place. So glad this player is staying put and hope several other free agents do the same. Tired of the crankees BUYING the damn title all of the time.

we have the best pitching in the league so leave it ALONE. spend money and sign rh bats and add speed.get rid of the hitting coach. he failed miserably with andruw. our hitters should go deeper in counts. another failure for this hitting coach. get rid of him. spend some money but leave this staff intact. lets give Bobby a much deserve world series ring. And as for us fans, lets come out more often and make some damn noise so that our boys get inspired and motivated. We blew it in the past but know we want more than a division banner hanging in our yard. Lets win this for Chipper and Bobby. Enough with complacency and halfass efforts. Braves in 2010. no ifs buts and maybees.

i live across the street from yankee stadium but ive been a Brave fan since 1957 (i was all of 7 yrs old) nobody hates the arrogant yankee team, its fans and ny press more than i do but i have to admit that steinbrenner's aggressive pursuit of players has made these bastards and their organization at the top. You never have enough pitching. keep this staff intact and spend big money and you'll see the fans return. lets not be satisfied with just winning divisions instead we should roll the dice and add more offense and speed so that we can win some World Championships.im planning more trips to see my Braves at Turner Field. I will make the loudest noise to support my team and i sure hope Atlanta fans will come out and support their team. make some noise damnit!

listen the braves need to resign LaRoache to a long term deal since he and Chipper are close friends which equals team chemistry. One thing all of yall are missing is the fact that the braves are over their cap space. So sadly we have to trade one of our six starters and most likely its going to be javier vasquez since he is the one every team is eyeing. I personally was dissapointed in Derek Lowes peformance from a suppose ace. Kawakami dissapointed me to but showed potential in his first year. I say we keep everybody except Gonzo, Garrett, and Church. Then when we sadly trade Vasquez we get in return a power hitting left fielder in the line up another year till Jason Heyward is truly ready, remember what happened with Schaffer. With all that said Prado and Diaz did a great job last year and I hear no praise about them.

    tenvols35 what are you smokin....................

do you really think A-Rod and Pujols could be had in a trade like that. STL is working feverishly right now to keep Pujols after the 2011 season. They want to sign Holliday to hit behind Albert and then have Ludwick bat 5th. That is quite a punch.

    A-Rod will retire a yankee!

expect a trade for a leadoff hitter like a CF - Michael Bourn (61sb) from Houston because there starving for pitching! theres 2 first baseman on the free agent market the brave will try to get Branyan, Russell (31Hrs) or Hank Blalock (25Hrs). Or the brave might trade for a 1st baseman and try to pick up a leadoff outfielder.
    Arizona Fall League:
    Freddie Freeman Stats
    AVG:.267 HR:1 RBI:5 SB:0 in 45 at -bats

Mike Minor (this years first round draft pick) Stats:
    ERA:2.31 W-L:1-0 SV:0 SO:9 in 11.2 inning pitched
sound just like another pitcher that pitched there last year named tommy hanson!

Hudson is productive AND a class act. Anderson & Church have to go. The best move the Braves could make Bobby Cox won't do in his last season - fire Terry Pendleton as hitting coach.

    Post 53, Corey S,

The Braves DID start Schaffer at leadoff in 2009... He struggled to even hit .200. He's going to have to do more with his opportunities than that if he wants to hit leadoff. Personally I'd much rather have Matt Diaz at leadoff if Schaffer is going to hit under .250
