Astros decline option on Brocail, add coaches

HOUSTON (AP)—The Houston Astros added several coaches to new manager Brad Mills’(notes) staff Friday, hiring Brad Arnsberg as their pitching coach, promoting Al Pedrique to bench coach and adding Bobby Meacham as their first-base coach.

The team also declined the 2010 option on right-handed relief pitcher Doug Brocail(notes) and re-signed third baseman Geoff Blum(notes) to a one-year, $1.5 million contract. Blum’s contract includes a mutual option for the 2011 season worth $1.65 million.

Mills was introduced as Houston’s new manager on Tuesday.

Pedrique was promoted to third-base coach when Cecil Cooper was fired on Sept. 21 and he was one of 10 candidates to interview for the manager position. He started the season as Houston’s minor league field coordinator.

Meacham was a coach for The Philadelphia Phillies’ Class A affiliate in Williamsport, Pa., this year. He was the New York Yankees’ third-base coach in 2008. Meacham replaces Jose Cruz, who accepted another job within the organization.

Arnsberg, Toronto’s pitching coach for the last five seasons, replaces Dewey Robinson, who has taken a job with Tampa Bay.

Brocail, 42, went 1-0 with a 4.58 ERA in 20 relief appearances with Houston in 2009. He went on the disabled list three times last season and missed a total of 99 games. The Astros declined an option for $2.85 million and paid him a $250,000 buyout.

The 36-year-old Blum hit .247 with 10 home runs and 49 RBIs in 120 games with the Astros last season. He started 101 games in 2009, 94 at third base.

Ed Wade is clearly the worst GM in all of Baseball. He proved it in Philly and now he's destroying this team now along with that buffoon Houston owner. The Stros will languish as a doormat for as long as Wade is their GM God help the Stros fans.

Tony La Russa pick his coaches, Joe Torre pick his coaches and all the rest of the
managers pick their coaches Now Why didn't Brad Mills pick his coaches. You know
and everybody knows that Al P. and Dave C. are going to contradict every decision
Brad Mills make and then they going to call ed wade and in two years Brad Mills is gone
And Al p. or Dave C. is going to take over and it's going to be worst.

When you say Dodgers I puke blood, think Mannyroid and start CHOKING on the other hand they do supply the rest of the league with good players, look at Werth ex-Dodger in the WS. Ethier is a free agent what team wouldn't want him in the line-up. With 16 free agents this year they will be lucky to place third next year, meanwhile the rest of the league will get some proven players.

The Dodgers barely won their division and won't get close next year! Maybe it is all that smog that makes them choke year after year!

In limited action he didn't too bad but he's going to be 43 early next season. Someone should give him a shot if he's physically OK because he did a decent job the year before and is a well seasoned veteran who's worth the gamble. .

Say 'Dodgers' and people know you're talking about baseball. Say 'Braves' and they ask, 'What reservation?' Say 'Reds' and they think of communism. Say 'Padres' and they look around for a priest."
