Astros hire Mills as manager

HOUSTON (AP)—Brad Mills(notes) is finally getting his chance to run a big-league team.

The 52-year-old Mills was hired by Houston on Tuesday after six seasons as Terry Francona’s bench coach in Boston. He’ll manage in the majors for the first time, though he’s managed a total of 11 seasons in the minors, with affiliates for the Chicago Cubs (1987-92), Colorado Rockies (1993-96) and Los Angeles Dodgers (2002).

“One thing that I’m going to bring in is a freshness, being with a champion and bringing that freshness in,” Mills said. “It’s a fresh voice, it’s a new voice.”

General manager Ed Wade said Mills agreed to a two-year contract, with a team option for the third. The Astros made an offer to former Nationals manager Manny Acta over the weekend, but Acta took the Cleveland Indians’ job instead.

Mills, interviewed by the team for the third time on Tuesday, set aside the notion that he was the Astros’ second choice.

“I’m going to move on from that,” Mills said. “I have to do what I think is best, and this opportunity is very good opportunity. I’m not talking about just to be a manager. To be in this organization is very special.”

Houston owner Drayton McLane spoke with Francona about Mills by phone on Sunday. Francona said Mills practically ran the Red Sox at times, allaying McLane’s concerns about his lack of major-league managing experience.

“He said, ‘I have given Brad more responsibility than I have ever seen a bench coach have,”’ McLane said. “He totally runs spring training and he handles most of the communication with the players. Terry said he’s been the assistant manager and has gathered all the necessary experience.”

The Astros fired Cecil Cooper on Sept 21. Third-base coach Dave Clark served as interim manager for the final 13 games and Houston finished 74-88. Clark was one of 10 candidates to interview for the full-time position, and he spoke for a second time with the team on Tuesday.

Clark was guaranteed a position on next year’s staff if he was not hired as the full-time manager, and Wade said Clark will return as Houston’s third-base coach.

Mills sold the Astros with his emphasis on communicating with players, a problem in the clubhouse when Cooper was manager.

“He talked a lot about respect, that you gain the respect of the players,” Wade said. “He’s not saying, ‘These are the new rules, there’s a new sheriff in town.’ His approach is, ‘We’re going to be consistent, they’re going to know what the plan is, they’re going to know what the expectations are. They’re going to know that we respect them, and treat them as individuals for the collective good of the club.”’

Mills served as the Philadelphia Phillies’ first-base coach from 1997-2000, when Francona was the manager. Wade was the Phillies’ GM from 1998-2005—and he fired Francona, Mills and three other coaches.

After leaving the Phillies, Mills served as an advance scout for the Cubs (2001) and was the bench coach in Montreal in 2003. The Red Sox hired him in January 2004.

Wade made an impassioned plea for Mills to McLane and other team executives.

“This is guy that fits for us, this is my choice,” Wade said. “When you take into consideration everything that you have to do, I think Millsey fits the bill perfectly.”

Mills has plenty of work to do. The Astros have endured two losing seasons in the four years since reaching the World Series in 2005, and Mills is the fourth manager hired since the middle of the 2004 season.

McLane is hoping Mills brings some stability.

“That was one of the ingredients we saw,” McLane said. “He’s a young man, as far as a manager candidate is and he can relate to players. I think he’s going to have a long, successful tenure.”

Houston was 49-46 on July 22, one game out of first place in the NL Central, then lost 42 of their last 67 games as the starting pitching deteriorated.

The offense was also subpar, ranking 27th in runs scored (3.97 per game) and 25th in on-base percentage (.319).

Mills said he’ll leave the offseason roster moves to Wade. His work will start at spring training, where he’ll stress preparation and cohesiveness.

“Everybody on the ballclub is important, and we’re going to communicate with all of them,” Mills said. “We’re going to start from day one working together and playing the game solidly and in a winning way. That’s what we’re going to do.”

No Garner! Thank the Gods! Anyone, anyone, was better than that underachieving, intellectually challenged jackass! Only Mclane in his unparalled cheapness would consider hiring a loser he fired for failure only a year and a half ago. Man, watching the playoff teams makes it hard to root for the Astros, an org devoid of ANY minor league talent and Ebeneezer F'ing Scrooge controlling the $ dough! So what else is new!

What is the big deal about Manny Acta? Teams fighting to hire a guy who's done nothing more than finish in last place.

Astros needs 3rd baseman with pwr rbi talents with fielding skills, catcher like the one they let go who besides catchin can hit when needed! 2nd base has to be reliable hitter contact to get leadoff man around bases! Then they can spend some money to get at least two more quality pitchers, Either by releasing closer to free up money or just bitin the bullet and aquiring some pitchin!

    1st off I agree with post 45.

Secondly I don't like that Mills said that he would leave the off-season roster moves to the front office while he focuses on spring training. Our front office will only botch this up like they have over the last few years. Mills should also have a voice on the players coming in because he's the one that has to manage them.

The Boston ship is sinking. Mills could do better than okay in Texas because he won't be playing stroke the T ego's like he had to in Boston. Gillick liked him, and Gillick knows talent.

With their screwed up farm system, thank you very much Drayton McLamebrain, the Astros can get Jesus H Christ to manage them. It won't make any difference. They are a 5th place team for several years to come. Mills must be pretty stupid to walk into the mess that exists in Houston. Sounds like an ideal match. Mills will find out the main purpose of a manager in Houston is to be Wade's scape goat. Wade brings in Mike "DL" Hampton and Russ "6 point oh" Ortiz to be the pitching saviors of Houston last year. After Ortiz gets cut (with a 6.0 ERA), Hampton spends half the season on the DL, and the Astros play 14 games under .500 as a result, Cooper, not Wade, gets fired. Yup, Wade knows exactly why he hires a manager and it isn't to manage.

I think Mills is probably a great manager for the Stros. My concern is Ed Wade. Seems he is the constant in Houston as we have gone downhill the last 4 yrs. He makes the trades and aquisitions, not the manager. Maybe we should get rid of Ed if the team doesn't improve. And, what happened to one of the BEST farm systems in the league? Houston used to have a top notch farm system. We need someone at the helm committed to building the farm system back.

To the Astros fans who are NOT getting on Millsy's bandwagon, I'll say this: He's a sharp baseball man and we're going to miss him in Fenway. Part of the reason Jimy WIlliams failed in Houston was due to a lack of depth. Sure there were legitimate stars, but Bagwell, Berkman, and Biggio weren't able to carry the team. Roy Oswalt could only perform his magic in 32 games, and Roger Clemens didn't show up until Williams was pretty much out the door. The Hidalgos, Lidges, Linebrinks, and Lorettas weren't enough to compensate for a thin starting rotation, and a potentially talented bullpen that had a hard time holding a lead. For what it's worth, Williams WAS over .500 for his tenure with the Astros.
Brad Mills has his hands full...looking at the Astros roster, there's not a lot there. Drayton Lane and his crew are going to have to preside over some serious voodoo before the Astros can field a talented team. Oswalt's health is shaky, Tejada isn't getting any younger, Pudge will likely defect, Towles isn't yet ready for prime time...If the Astros flop in 2010, Brad Mills ISN'T to blame.

Andy W you sound retarded. You think that AL coaches can't execute a double switch? If you spend most of your life in baseball you tend to learn the rules and strategies no matter if there is a DH or not. The managerial position isn't all about strategies, anyone that knows anything about baseball knows the X's and O's. It's about making a team believe in you and and play as a team. It's about balancing ego's and keeping blood thirsty reporters at bay. Some managers are good at one but not the other, this guy sounds like the right choice to give this franchise a fresh look. This is exactly what the Stros needed to do and hire outside the organization.

I don't like the astros choice for manager. rember jimmy williams came from boston and he did nothing for the astros and got fired in july at the all star break.he even got booed at the all star game as a coach for the n.l. in 2004.boston manager's don't do good here in houston,tx because their is no dh here in the national league like the american league they don't know how to make double switches in the national league like a national league manager does. i want phil garner back with the astros. i won't go to a game unless ed wade and his manager mills are fired.

2 year contract? Drayton should offer an 81 game contract with option to renew. This is why we go through so many managers. Ownership just not confident in their hiring decisions.
