Alomar hoping for election to Hall of Fame

  • Print

TAMPA, Fla. (AP)—Roberto Alomar has career numbers that compare favorably with many of baseball’s greatest second basemen. The question is how will one memorable lapse impact his bid to make the Hall of Fame.

On the ballot for the first time, the 12-time All-Star’s resume is impressive. He was a two-time World Series champion with Toronto, and hit .300 with 210 homers, 1,134 RBIs and 474 stolen bases in 17 seasons.

But his stats have often been overshadowed by an incident in late 1996 when, after being called out on strikes, he spit in the face of umpire John Hirschbeck.

Alomar and Hirschbeck grew close after that episode.

“We became real good friends,” Alomar said Thursday. “He forgave me and I hope all the other people forgive me. Sometimes, we as human beings, we do stupid things. I regret doing that.”

Alomar, relaxed and looking fit, visited with former big league players and other participants at the New York Yankees’ fantasy camp. He was with his wife, and they are building a home in the Tampa area.

“I’m married, raising a child, just happy and enjoying life,” Alomar said.

One of Alomar’s biggest Hall of Fame supporters is Hirschbeck.

“It’s real special because I got to know not only him, I got to know his family,” Alomar said. “I got to spend more time with him.”

Away from the spotlight, Alomar has been teaching at youth baseball camps and helped raise funds for adrenoleukodystrophy, a disease that impacted two of Hirschbeck’s sons.

Alomar was involved in an explosive lawsuit earlier this year in which his ex-girlfriend alleged he made her have unprotected sex even though he had AIDS.

The lawsuit was settled in May, and allegations against Alomar were never corroborated. Alomar’s attorney, Charles Bach, said the suit was withdrawn voluntarily, but wouldn’t say if his client paid any money.

Coming from a baseball family—his father, Sandy Sr. played 15 years in the majors, and brother Sandy Jr. was a six-time All-Star during a 20-year career— makes the Hall of Fame consideration extra special.

“A goal for ballplayers, it’s real tough to accomplish, is to get to the Hall of Fame,” Alomar said. “It would mean a lot. We, as ballplayers, when they mention your name, that you can be talked about being in the Hall of Fame, if I get there it will be the end of the book. The greatest feeling of my life.”

“I consider this a team effort if I make it because I didn’t do it by myself,” he added. “I do it with the support of my family, my Little League managers, everyone. All of the dreams from Day One when you start playing the game of baseball.”

After a five-year break, Alomar would like to get back into the game.

“I would love to be involved,” Alomar said. “When I left the game it was tough. At the same time, I’m not the kind of player to go out there and just play the game of baseball just to play the game of baseball. I have too much respect for this game. When I saw I was incapable of playing the way I could play, then I decided to retire.”

He was one of the best during his time and left an impressive statistical resume behind along with being an integral part of 2 championship teams and part of another contender years later. Had he reached 3000 hits he certainly would have been a first ballot shoo in. The unfortunate reality is he didn't and fell short by a few hundred when he left at an age where he had plenty of time to get it done. He should get in down the road though. Other peers have been enshrined with less statistical fanfare. He was excellent from the get go as a very young rookie with San Diego and was part of one the biggest trades in baseball history when he landed in Toronto where he went on to biggest accomplishments. He also set the standard for 2nd basemen during the bulk of his career. He was great but could have been greater.

for all of you people who think that the spitting incident was enough to keep alomar out of the hall.....forget it.....he ain't going in high like ripken, or seaver , or jim palmer even.....i predict he goes in first ballot w/ 91.5-94.5% of the votes....and about pete rose, while i'm listening to all this,........pete goes into the hall the year after he dies....baseball and the bhof can all save face this way....as long as rose never gets to profit from writing his name as hof....of course pete rose belongs in the hall, just not while he's breathing....and as for making your girlfriend have unprotected sex....c'mon man.......whats the point in having a girlfriend if you can't have unprotected sex? unless you're babe ruth.....he got syphillis from banging 5 chicks at a time.....even fell over on the field from syphillis related sickness.....and you're worried about alomar? aids? yeah right.

Alomar cannot get in for one reason - the Mets Curse. Want your Hall of Fame chances dashed? Simply join the NL team in NYC. Just ask Barry Bonilla, Frank Viola, Carlos Baerga or Vince Coleman. Now, Mets fans, hurl your expletives, I'm just callin' em likes I sees 'em.

#76...Joe Jackson took money from gamblers to throw the Series. This is an undisputed fact. All the stats in the world don't change that. Maybe he doublecrossed the gamblers, but he still took their money to throw the Series and he knew others did the same. Maybe if he were overcome by guilt as the myth goes, he should have blown the whistle, but he didn't do that, either.

I take exception to post #72. Shoeless Joe hit .375 in that series with more RBI than anyone and the other 7 players said later that he was not involved. Jackson should be in the Hall. Go White Sox!

What married guy with AIDS doesn't force his girlfriend to have unprotected sex? Give the guy a break. And spitting in an umpire's face? Come on...

Seriously, though, he was an All-Star 12 consecutive times, finished with an average over .300 in 9 of those seasons, and took the Gold Glove in 10 of them. He's a HoFer all the way.

Pete Rose is a HoFer too.

Nothing against Alomar, but there are many more people I feel are more worthy to be in the Hall of Fame. I do not think Alomar should be in the Hall of Fame on the first ballot... down the road, I can accept it. Yeah he was good, but when I saw him, I really just saw an above average player, but never thought of the Hall of Fame for him. Should he get in? Yeah he should go in AFTER guys like Blyleven gets in.

In my opinion, the hall of fame has become second rate, they let good players into the hall, but not hall of fame worthy players. That said, i think Roberto alomar deserves to be in the hall, because he is an all around great player. He can play both sides of the ball, both offense and defense extremely well, he deserves it. Mcgwire, absolutely not, just cause you hit a bunch of home-runs doesn't put you automatically in the hall. As for Pete rose, his hall of fame worthy, but doesn't deserve it, first of all the integrity of the game is above all else. Shoeless Joe Jackson was also a great player, but he bet on games as well. Secondly, Pete rose did this to himself. The baseball commission was going to investigate the gambling allegations against him, but he negotiated a deal with them. The deal was if they stop investigating they could black list him from the hall. It's Pete rose's own fault his not in the hall. Baseball's integrity is above all else

if alomar wore a yankees or bosox uniform in the prime of his career his HoF credentials woudnt even be debated . he is one of the best all around players of his era and his defensive range and ability was umparallelled.

Rose will forever be the greatest player for the Reds and a HOF for his on field performance. If his betting (never against his own team) is the main reason for Rose not being admitted, why should Alomar's AIDS, and spitting allow him to be in on the first ticket? By comparison, Larkin deserves more than Alomar. So many drug enhanced performances had darkened the baseball sport so you can erase all those McGwire, Smith's records and still proclaim Hank Aaron and Babe Ruth as the fans #1 home run kings. The world is not perfect and for pete's sake, we even had a president who redefined sex at the Oval.

Shouldn't anyone who votes for Alomar also vote for Raines? Raines suffers from being on a team (Montreal) that got no fans, even when they were the best team in baseball, that strike shortened season. His character as far as I have heard is impeccable and he played his first year as the youngest player in the league and finished his career as the thrid oldest active player. I know that mean little to many, but to me that shows he was still wanted by teams. And he didn;t change teams as much as many have done.

I think if you think Alomar should be in there, then you should definately also vote for Raines.

Just had to get that off my chest. lol

I find it hard to believe that anyone is concerned about Alomar and the spitting incident. It happened, he apolgized, The umpire forgave him. Its over and has been over for many years now. That being said, I didnt see alot on his stats to make me put himin the HoF. An above average 2B but the HoF is for alot more.
As for HoF "criteria"...that would make things a bit easier I admit. But I think that voters should grow up and be adults. I'm rather tired of holding some players to lower standards while holding others to higher ones. Personally, Barry Bonds should be banned from baseball, his records expunged. But that being said....I think that Pete Rose deserves to be in the HoF simply because he never bet on his team to LOSE. BB cheated to help his team win. The same standard applies. As for McGwire, making him pay for taking things that were NOT illegal when he took them....seems a bit much. But hey there are enough people with guilt that a white baseball player had the effrontary to break Babe Ruth's single season record first, so they made sure he wouldnt overtake Barry's persuit of the Babe. so lets see.. Barry stays out, Pete Rose and Mcgwire go in..easy.

How can anyone say someone shouldnt get in due character issues when Ty Cobb is in the Hall? The Hall is for players not Popes, we expect too much from entertainers. They dont have to men of character, they just need to be great ballplayers.

Alomar's numbers are good enough, but his character was definitely lacking. And I'm not speaking of just the Hirschbeck incident.

Alomar has better stats across the board than most of the second baseman already in the Hall of Fame. He is definitely a Hall of Famer.

Spit on an Umpire versus using Steroids or betting on games.......hmmmm

Disrespecting a person versus disrespecting the game.........hmmmmm

While Roberto Alomar conducted a shameful act, he is Hall of Fame material!!!

Here is what I think should happen.......the Hall Of Fame should outline in detail what it takes to make the HOF and what actions will eliminate you getting elected, i.e. if you are CAUGHT cheating the game of baseball using steroids/enhancements, then you should be barred, period.

What is going to happen when Bonds, A-ROD, Pettitte and Manny are eligible for the HOF? Their careers are worthy of the HOF, but their affiliation with enhancements should factor in as well. People can say what they want about Bonds and McGwire, but they never was suspended.......There are a lot of people in the HOF that did their dirt outside of Baseball, so what gives?

    Let's marinate on that!!!
