CC Sabathia all aces for Yanks as he wins ALCS MVP

  • Print

NEW YORK (AP)—As the pitching prize of last offseason, CC Sabathia(notes) had options. Sure, the Yankees threw a mountain of money at him. It was names like Jeter, Pettitte, Posada and Rivera that sealed the deal, though.

“That’s why I signed,” Sabathia said of the core group from New York’s run of four World Series titles from 1996-2000. “These guys had the experience in these tough games and tough situations and they shined through this postseason.”

No time for modesty CC—you shined brightest of all.

The imposing ace was picked as the MVP of the AL championship series on Sunday, setting the tone for the Yankees in their six-game victory over the Los Angeles Angels with two overpowering outings.

“Sabathia is our leader,” said Jorge Posada(notes), who is headed to his sixth World Series.

The Yankees wrapped up the ALCS with a 5-2 victory in Game 6, meaning the 28-year-old Sabathia’s next start will be a tantalizing one—he’ll oppose former Cleveland teammate and AL Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee(notes) when New York plays Philadelphia on Wednesday night in the first World Series game at the new Yankee Stadium.

“I want to hit. I want to hit against him,” Sabathia said of matching up against Lee, failing to note the designated hitter is used in the AL park. “They’re the defending champs so we got to go through them.”

With Sabathia on the mound potentially for three starts, the Yankees like their chances.

In the ALCS, the 6-foot-7, 290-pound lefty pitched eight innings of four-hit ball in cold, blustery conditions to win 4-1 in Game 1. He was equally overpowering in Game 4 in sunny Anaheim, giving up a run and five hits in eight innings—on three days’ rest.

“CC has been the guy that the Yankees have paid a lot of money for and he’s shown what he is capable to do,” said Mariano Rivera(notes), who earned his second save of the series Sunday night and his postseason-record 37th overall.

Signed to a $161 million, seven-year deal as the linchpin of the Yankees’ $423.5 million offseason push to return to the playoffs after missing out in 2008, Sabathia has brushed aside the pressure of the postseason from start No. 1.

After tying for the major league lead with 19 wins, he shut down the Minnesota Twins in the opener of the division series and is 3-0 with a 1.19 ERA in these playoffs. The success with New York comes after he went 2-3 with a 7.92 ERA in five previous postseason starts with Cleveland and Milwaukee.

He has struck out 20 in 22 innings, and opponents are hitting just .205 against him.

“CC was huge for us,” manager Joe Girardi said. “Our starting pitching has been outstanding throughout.”

Usually all business on the mound, Sabathia has shown emotion this October, especially in Game 1 against the Angels when he pumped his fist and shouted after striking out pinch-hitter Mike Napoli(notes) to end the seventh inning.

“This is a great feeling,” Sabathia said. “This is what you come here for, to play in the postseason games and try to perform. This feels good but we have a long way to go. From Day 1 of spring training you could tell this was going to be a memorable year for us.”

Sabathia has been the No. 1 starter the Yankees had spent millions looking for since Andy Pettitte(notes) left for Houston and Roger Clemens(notes) temporarily retired after the 2003 season. Kevin Brown, Randy Johnson(notes) and Javier Vazquez(notes) all flopped in New York. And homegrown Chien-Ming Wang(notes) was a bust in the 2007 playoffs.

Sabathia slipped easily into the role, going 19-8 with a 3.37 ERA and 197 strikeouts in 230 innings, his lowest total since 2006. The Yankees went 22-12 in his starts and were 8-4 when he started after a loss. He was 11-2 after the All-Star break.

“CC is a bona fide ace,” Johnny Damon(notes) said. “That’s why he’s the MVP.”

Girardi was sure to give Sabathia plenty of rest down the stretch after the Yankees built a big lead in the AL East, and it has paid off in the playoffs.

Sabathia has gone deep in all of his postseason starts and still looks fresh enough for the Fall Classic. His ability to quickly rebound helped Milwaukee reach the postseason last year and gives Girardi the luxury of going with a three-man rotation in the best-of-seven World Series.

Sabathia came close to reaching the World Series in 2007, when Cleveland had a two-game lead over Boston in the ALCS. The loss left a big impression on him and was one of the reasons he chose to sign with the experienced Yankees.

“This feels good,” Sabathia said. “Being up 3-1 in ’07, feeling like we had a chance to go to the World Series and having that taken away from you, it feels good now.”

Why does it take so long for the A.L. and N.L. MVP winners to be announced? It should at least be decided right after the regular season ends and winners announced after the world series finishes.

I will wear my Cleveland Indians shirt for the last time this Wednesday to watch Sabathia vs. Lee, then I will burn it, never to follow the Indians again. Thanks Dolans. I'm done with Cleveland.

twainshonic sounds as if he resents spending for the best. Would he spend for the best lawyer, for the best doctor, for the best school for his children?? It really is disingenuous to criticize those who are successful for using their successes to become more successful. And about a salary cap--the NBA and NFL have one. How many teams in either league have a realistic chance of winning it all? How many different teams have been champions since 200 in either league--compare that number to the number of different teams that have been champions in MLB. Salaries are just a part of the equation--to make it seem that they are the problem flies in the face of truth and reality, but you have to do that if you want to argue from emotions.

the entire league is the yankees farm system!!! baseball is such a cruel joke, and CCs ring will be the punchline. 3/4 of the teams in the league are out of contention every january, the regular season is a waste of time. i miss cal ripken, alan trammel, jim rice, tony gwynn, etc... congrats CC, you sell-out!

I live in Michigan and have been a Yankee fan my entire life, I know that the owner of the Detroit Tiger's is worth more than the ower of the Yankee's. The fans in New York are the luckiest fans because the owners will spend money to win ! here in michigan our owners just look at the bottom line , how much money can I make!. The best deal as a Yankee fan at least for me was the Yankee's trading Gary Sheffield to the Detroit Tiger's and if you follow baseball what a bust he was!! Then the Tiger's release him and the Mets pick him up for $400,000 and the Tiger's have to paid the rest of $14,000,000. ;and look at the end result the Met's go bust!!!GO YANKEE'S

Robi your slave analogy is just about the stupidest thing I've read in a long line of stupid comments about the Yankees. As a few others have said, let's just stop the crap about the huge payroll already. If they'd LOST, all the comments would be things like, "See, money isn't everything." That's what you heard when the Angels won their two games. Would any of you boycott going to see a movie, just because they producers spent more money than every other movie at the theaters? DId any of you complain that The Dark Knight or Transformers or any other humongo-budget movie just paid out "too much money" for actors/special effects, so you were not in favor of it doing well? Give me a break. This is AMERICA--you get what you pay for.
At least there are no Angels fans blaming the payroll or the umps for some of the Angels errors last night. Hey, the Angels played great baseball--they gave the Yankees a good run, and I take my hat off to them. However, the better team won.
I'm proud to be a Chicago-area Yankees fan. I've been a fan for most of my life, and I'm really happy for A-Rod in his first World Series. Roids in his past or not, he played like a champ in this ALCS. Also, I'm overjoyed for Petit, Jeter, Rivera (they are all Gods of Baseball in my eyes).
GO YANKEES!!!! The Phillies are a great team, of course, but I don't think they have what it takes to beat this year's Bronx Bombers.

If you want a salary cap, stop going to games, stop buying the merchandise, and stop watching the games on television. Until then, why fix a product that isn't broken.

If there's a salary cap, the money will go straight to the Steinbrenner's pockets instead of the players who do the work. Instead of being mad at the Yankees for spending money that they had to spend after Mussina, Pavano, Giambi and others came off the books, be mad at the owners who refuse to spend money. Most of the owners in baseball have just as much money as the Steinbrenners. Do the research. The difference is the Steinbrenners invest in their fans and they actually want to win, rather than worrying about the bottom line.

Every non-Yankee fan is jealous deep down inside that their owner doesn't care as much about winning as the Steinbrenners do. It's just like I'm jealous that great hockey players don't come to play for the Devils at a discount like they do for the Red Wings.

@WAAAAAAAH, we nedd a salary cap, and whoever that applies to. Why dont you go move to a Socialist country, they work so well.

Salary caps are crap, it rewards small markets and poor business that can't support their teams to begin with, or are completely unsuccesful at running them. You want fairness in baseball/sports, limit farm systems, and create a performanced based multi tiered system (similar to the English Premirship). You want competiton for the the Yankees and Red Sox, create an open system where other buisness men can start teams in the same citys to compete for their fan dollars. Salary cap is not fair to any business and proffesional sports is a buisness. Every player is bought and paid for.

Congrats to Yankees and their fans, all I hear on ESPN is the biggest payroll crap, big deal,it's the law of the jungle and the team with the biggest teeth win, free agency is policy and if a team pays for good players so be it,who would expect a team with mediocre players to compete anyway,FA makes baseball worth watching and if people want to gripe about payroll, too bad...

Who said money can't buy you happiness..Over 1 billion to put together a team of overpaid athletes..I do not blame the players they should get every single penny that they can from a system that allows the biggest checkbook to BUY whomever he wants..Kinda like a slave but they are getting paid so well a slave for the rich is 100% ok.. I hate the Phillies so bad but I will be wishing them the very best and hope the ignorant spoiled rich owner has to buy some higher priced slaves next season.. Hmmm, maybe Howard in pin stripes....Then again they did freeze Ted Williams head...Put his head on corpse and have Dawn of the Damn Yankees..Can anyone say salary cap?? If so it will be..Man our yankees almost one that game 2 weeks ago...Like the Pirates...

The reason CC and the tribe weren't in the '07 series was because CC blew it. You're welcome for giving him that experience.
