Red Sox 2B Pedroia named AL Player of the Week

NEW YORK (TICKER) Boston Red Sox rookie second baseman Dustin Pedroia was named American League Player of the Week on Monday.

Pedroia posted a .609 (14-for-23) batting average with a .870 slugging percentage and a .640 on-base percentage. During a three-game weekend series against the New York Yankees, Pedroia went 8-for-14 with five RBI.

This marks the first weekly award for Pedroia, who struggled to a .182 average in April. He is currently riding a 13-game hitting streak.

Other candidates included Cleveland Indians catcher Victor Martinez, Pedroia’s teammate Mike Lowell, Seattle Mariners outfielder Jose Guillen and Baltimore Orioles catcher Ramon Hernandez.
