Ichiro ejection a career-first

  • Print

TORONTO (AFP) - Seattle Mariners outfielder Ichiro Suzuki(notes) was ejected from Saturday's game against the Blue Jays for arguing a called third strike, the first time in his career he's been thrown out of a game.

The prolific hitter used his bat to draw a line on the outer edge of the plate, demonstrating that he thought David Purcey's(notes) strike-three pitch was outside.

Home plate umpire Brian Runge immediately tossed Suzuki, who argued briefly before Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu walked him off the field.

Michael Saunders(notes) replaced Suzuki in the lineup.

Suzuki went 0-3, dropping his average to .353. He's second to Minnesota catcher Joe Mauer(notes) in the American League batting race.

Earlier this month, Suzuki became the first player in Major League Baseball history to get at least 200 hits in nine straight seasons.

He broke a tie with Willie Keeler, who reached 200 hits for eight straight seasons from 1894-1901.

Suzuki, in his ninth season in the majors, also reached the 2,000-hit plateau this month - the 259th major leaguer to get there.

He had never been thrown out of a game before, either in the States or in his playing days in Japan.

The emphatic punch by the ref was completely unnecessary. The ump was obviously defensive and his performance should be review. Go Mariners!

actually there i no need for a home plate umpire, balls and strikes should be called via computer. why is baseball the only sport that doesn't have official review options?

It is a known fact and rue in aseball that you cant argue balls and strikes. However, umpires are too quick to throw out a palyer. It is time for MLB to disband its current crop(crap)load of umps and start anew. This time without the useless unions.

It will happen every time no matter what nationality you are. Umpires will not tollerate being shown up like that. He might as well have reached in his back pocket and offered the ump a giant pair of glasses. "YOU'RE OUT OF HERE" every time, with every ump............. Who cares? It's not like he hurt his team, they're just playing out the season.

Yes, many players do argue a third strike call;but, it is how they do it that leads to the reaction of the umpire. Since Ichiro drew a line with his bat showing were he thought the ball was an instantaneously judging the umpire on where the exact pitch was he should be tossed. Its the code of ethics in baseball not to show up an umpire. you may argue but when you make your own decision on what happened you are showing up the umpire. My dad played in the majors for 12 years so I grew up in clubhouses around the country and everytime you saw a guy thrown out and asked, "Why?", just rethink it and you'll realize he showed p the umpire's judgement in some way.
Now not to say that other circumstances may lead to an objection but just in this case Ichiro showed up the umpire and was rightly ejected.

I'm not going to lie, I don't really understand major league baseball, so it seems a bit odd to me that he'd get thrown out for showing the ump where he thought the ball went.

    Is this a normal thing?

hey 485, Im pretty sure they come from other countries cuz the MLB isnt dead, and he's obviously been in the majors long enough to know a ball from a strike, and to eject him from the game over that, was just a mistake by the umpire. As you said nearly every good player has argued a call or two, but they dont throw them out for it. Its not like he went all Lou Piniella on him.

hey 477, I am pretty sure every single MLB player has argued a third strike... and some of them ARE from America. GASP! By the way, I am pretty sure football is Americas past time now.

And lastly, have you noticed that the best players in the league tend to be from other countries? Just a lil thought for your racist brain. Without those players from over seas, the MLB would be dead.

The ump went over board by throwing him out but, you can't expect the ump to over turn his wrong call just becuase a player was complaining that it was wrong. If you have ever called a game even its not easy. As for the rest of the retards talking about steroids and everything else. Watch the man play, he is probably one of the best hitters we will ever see in our lifetime.

Ump was wrong. Pujols gives the ump that stare and rarely gets tossed. Ump just wanted to make a name for himself. Best advice for ump-----make sure you don't get mentioned in the game recap. That means you did your job well.I'm no Ichiro fan but he is a classy palyer. That's why he's never been tossed. That and the fact most umps don't speak Japanese.
