Big League Stew - MLB

It took nearly a week, but baseball finally captured speedy Howie Kendrick(notes) in its big wet blanket.

Upon further review, MLB's five-person appeals board overturned the inside-the-park home run that Kendrick thought he hit last Friday against the Royals, ruling it a four-base error on Kansas City outfielder Jose Guillen(notes) instead.

The negation, of course, didn't change the outcome of the game — the Angels still won 4-1 and no fireworks were returned to their canisters — but it cut Kendrick's 2009 homer total by 25 percent to three and probably caused someone, somewhere to lose their head-to-head fantasy matchup for the season.

(If that's you, Andy Behrens at Roto Arcade has already set up a support group for the afflicted.)

But before you think that allowing Kendrick's round-tripper to stand would have been a victimless crime, know this: The play was only challenged because the Royals weren't happy with the ruling. The adjustment took two earned runs off Gil Meche's(notes) total, dropping his ERA to 4.01.

Said Meche last Friday: "If you want to call it an inside-the-parker, go ahead. I'd rather not comment on that one." For his part, Guillen said he didn't make the play because he closed his glove too soon while approaching the right field line and the ball appeared to glance off his mitt before rolling toward the wall.

Seems like an accurate reversal, but you can watch the video here and judge for yourself. I'd be curious to know your thoughts on this one. Was the play just an overzealous ruling by an official scorer caught up in the moment of 41,019 fans cheering Kendrick around the bases?

Or should Kendrick (and his fantasy owners) be mourning the loss of a deserved home run?

Should MLB have overturned Kendrick's inside-the-parker?

That anyone would think that play was anything but an error is absurd. Yes, it means great value in fantasy baseball to have the HR, but seriously... the ball should have been caught.

Clearly an error, it hit off Guillen's glove.
Even the Anaheim announcer said, "We won't call it an inside the park home run, yet."

I thought they ruled it an error on Friday night. I just assumed "Oh, Guillen misplayed that for an error. I'm glad I've only got him on my fantasy team for his bat!" What a bogus call Anaheim score keeper.

i'm not shocked the angles home scorekeeper called that a hr. i am shocked that mlb has a five-person appeals board. is that like the supreme court of baseball? can we get a ruling on the dh?

I watched the play, and I'm not really sure. He did drop the ball and he probably could have caught it; but then again, he had to run a pretty long way all the way to the line. In my opinion, because it could go either way, they should go with the original call.
Also, do the fantasy points still count? I'm pretty sure they would.

I see it as a 50-50 call - they could call it either way. He did run a long way, but he had stopped and should have made the catch. Either way, somebody was going to be annoyed.
Hits and errors, as well as wild pitches and passed balls, are decided "in the judgment of the official scorer," just like balls and strikes are in the judgment of the umpire. In the case of the scorer, it is based on how you read and interpret the rules. In my opinion, the call should have stood because it was based on the scorer's judgment.
And for those of you bashing on the scorekeeper: unless you have done the job yourself, at the collegiate or professional level, you ought to pipe down. Scoring is not as easy and straightforward as you think, and sitting in the stands or in your barcalounger at home watching a replay gives you time and 20-20 hindsight, something real scorers don't have.

I was watching the game and it was so obviously an error that I figured as soon as they called it a HR they would reverse the call. Those who think it was 50-50 apparently didn't see the outfielder SLOW DOWN to time the catch, then miss it. The Royals had every right to protest the ruling. Good for them.

if every misplayed ball... whether as closely should have been caught as they may be or not... was considered an error... the fielding percentages as they are would not be nearly as low as they currently stand because scorekeepers would go error crazy on every single one of them. he may have thought he had it in his glove but it is not caught till it is in the glove and CLEARLY it was not IN the glove. Most of you perfectionists of the game are going to jump all over this because youre going to claim its nothing like the situation at hand but it can be relative to the same way an OF dives for a ball and misses it... do they call those errors too? not all the time. But according to those of you who think this is an error, such statements from some of you about this situation would make it seem as they should all be errors.... leave the scoring to those who do the job. If you think they do it so badly or they mess it up so badly, go apply for the job (good luck getting it) until then, SHUT THE HELL UP AND ENJOY THE GAME and quit thinking youre so perfect when none of us are... i mean holy heck in a handbasket already people!

Stop me if I'm wrong but, isn't a week later a bit too late to change a ruling? What happened, happened. I don' t think Kendrick (or anyone) should lose a HR way after the fact.

It's a little ridiculous that the MLB will go back and change stats days later. I remember the NBA doing this to LeBron and lowering his rebound total one game, it's just weird to think that the stats can change completely from night to night

The scorekeeper made the right call. Guillen clearly misplayed the ball. It doesn't matter if the ball hit his glove or not. And for the fantasy baseball issue, Kendrick will hit many more home runs the year.....The play wasn't a home run anyways.

they way they judge hits/errors is: If the play was made, would it have been above average? If yes, then it is not an error. Clearly if he made that catch it would not have been an above average play. Error is the correct call.

may or may not have been an error. But fact remains it was declared an inside the park homerun and if they were going to call it an error they should have done it there and then NOT a week later. That's ridiculous, if the game ends, and everyone goes home, it's too late to change the stats of the game.

I'm English and don't watch baseball. Is it a home run inside the park because it hit the wall? if so, then it should stand and my advice to Jose Gullen is to close your hand only after the ball is in it. This reads to me as though they're saying he should have caught it and therefore... Baseball has far too many silly rules, if what I've been told is true.
