Why the Colorado Rockies should sign Barry Bonds

With Barry Bonds currently out of work and teams looking to improve their lot in MLB, the Shunned One's name will undoubtedly be brought up countless times this season. So, each week until Mr. Bonds catches a fulltime ride, the Stew will feature teams that might be able to use his impressive services.

The question will be a simple one: Should your team finally take the plunge and sign the most controversial man in sports? Today's argument comes from Nate Carlisle, a crime reporter for the Salt Lake Tribune and a co-commissioner of the Missouri Sports Writers Rotisserie Baseball League, a fantasy league founded by classmates from the University of Missouri’s student newspaper, The Maneater.

Nate's case for allowing Bonds to ply his trade in the laissez-faire minded West folllows the jump:

Ride out of here, Butch and Sundance.

Billy The Kid, lay down your guns.

The West is ready for a new desperado, and it's Barry Bonds.

That's who the Colorado Rockies should sign if they don't want to resume their place as the National
League's General Custer.

The on-field reasons are clear. Bonds has a 1.162 career OPS at Coors Field. As of Sunday, the Rockies were 11th in the National League for runs scored, trailing both the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

But who couldn't use Bonds bat? As we've seen before on The Barry Bonds Job Watch, the real Bonds discussion examines whether your team would suffer in the public relations and team chemistry categories.

Those problems would be minimized if the Bonds arrived in Denver. People in the Rocky Mountain states have live-and-let-live attitudes and believe the government should leave them alone and stick to building sewers, roads and armies. There's plenty of opposition out here when the government tries to regulate anything else, whether it's wolves, air or land.

That sentiment can only benefit Bonds and his employer. Bonds won't be confused as a folk hero, but the crowd at Coors Field won't boo out to the Supermax prison, either.

Look at the last great sports scandal to hit the Rocky Mountains. Lots of people here in Utah still believe
the government was playing politics when it twice brought to trial organizers of the 2002 Olympic Games.
If you believed no one was hurt by what what federal prosecutors called bribes to Olympic Committee
members, why would you believe Bonds' steroid use and denials hurt anyone?

Look, Denver is not New York or Los Angeles or even San Francisco. There will be a platoon of reporters to ask Bonds about steroids and the latest filing in his criminal case, but there will not be a brigade once the initial national media crush retreats. It's quite possible that Bonds might find some relative solitude in the thin air.

I can hear shouts in the distance about Bonds having to play that big outfield at Coors, but be quiet. Bonds' bat and OBP should compensate for his defense. Plus, if the Rockies grab him fast, he can be the designated hitter in the interleague games.

As for the other players on the team and how they'd be affected: Every night the Rockies announcers spend one or two at-bats talking about what a great player Matt Holliday is. Clint Hurdle can move him to right field, just to see if he can get the announcers to devote one or two innings to Holliday.

Brad Hawpe and Ryan Spilborghs, who have been playing right field for Colorado, are serviceable, but they
will never be superstars. Trade one of them for another need — Rockies pitching is back to being among
the worst in baseball. — and keep one so Bonds can take some days off and exit for a defensive improvement late in the game.

Yeah, so Bonds might be too much Man With No Name and not enough Roy Rogers, but in the West, people like results.

Not judgments.

A big BLS thanks to Nate for his thoughts. You can read more of The Barry Bonds Job Watch here and if you have an argument for why your team should or shouldn't sign Bonds, e-mail 'Duk here.

Should Barry really be worried about playing again? I like him don't agree with his attitude or aht he did but he has always been a good player. But I think that he should focus on the mess he got himself into. I would suggest that he should be signed by an AL team as a DH, his golden gloves are long gone and hes not as fast as he used to be.

If the Rockies get rid of Willy Tavaras (which is possible) then they could move Hawpe to Center (he's got the arm for it, just needs to work on range) put Barry in right, and leave Holliday alone in left. I think Barry would have a better time in Right with the high fence and less ground to cover.

barry would get booed every game. signing barry would be a huge pr step back for the owners and management that have finally gained a little ground with the fans.

Hawpe in Center? You must be joking. If the Rockie front office wants to assure that Holliday and Atkins don't resign in Colorado, then they should sign Bonds.

if barry comes to the Rockies i will no longer watch them. Stupidest idea bringing him in. We dont need hitters pitching is our problem. And also i will always remember the game last year sitting 20 feet from Bonds when Tulo hit a homer and a fan from behind me shouted. "Thats how you hit a clean one" bonds in the black and purple wouldnt be right and true sports fans know y.

As a Dodger fan here experiencing post steroid use sluggers (cough Andruw Jones) first hand, I can honestly say that his bat will never make up for what he lacks (see The Rest of his Game) elsewhere. If you put Bonds in the outfield, get used to hearing announcers making this call. "And another short fly ball drops into right. Looks like Heltons gonna have to run out and get this one too."

I'm not sure we should be thinking about signing Barry Bonds. I believe that he might have, in fact, used steroids. Still, if we were to sign him, we could be even better offensively. I just don't know what to say about this idea right now. He could get us to the World Series again, or we'd be retarded by signing him, if he actually was guilty of using PEDs.

Live and let live attitudes?? Ask Brian Griese... or Kobe Bryant.. or Thug Bertuzzi....or better yet.. Bonds himself.
No.. we in the Rocky Mountain area want our heroes to be heroes. Not goats.

yes, let's move one of the best defensive cf in the nl and replace him with a questionable defender in rf, nevermind cf, so we can spend $14m on a guy who'll bat .250/.410/.425 with absolutely no defense in the field, can't run, and can't be a team player. that'll go over well.

The bottom line is - NOBODY SHOULD SIGN HIM TO BEGIN WITH. If someone does, it won't be a national league team (knees, remember. and way too much money for a PH). The minuses in defense are so huge - even if he only plays one out of four games. And that's from a mostly baseball point of view. When you even begin to think of all the personal problems and teammate problems as well the steroid issue... He offers nothing to baseball anymore - and why anyone would want to bring his crap, regardless of his bat, into the clubhouse is beyond me.

What about replacing the manager and coaching staff with sports writers? That alone would add 15 to 20 more victories and lessen the need to sign free agents.

I think you know far too little about the management of the Rockies. They've had enough of the Denny Neagle's and Barry Bond's of baseball. There's no way they would even think of signing him. Let alone, looks like there is a very high chance that he is going to be getting jail time now. And they love their young talent too much to sign the ancient Barry Bonds anyways. And rightfully so. Barry needs to give it up. Stupid idea all around.

Barry is done in baseball, Colorado fans don't like him, don't want him, if you remember last season the Rocks had a crummy start and finished what...oh yeah barley making the playoffs and going on a cinderella run, they won the NL because they got hot at the right time. Barry should just stick to making appearances in court.

Barry haters are losers. Barry haters and anti-Barry bloggers are cancers to baseball and bloggs. His case will be thrown out and wont even take place. Most of you are idiots! I want to hear how horrible he is out of another ball players mouth. Not a nerd blogger who had to quit baseball before he was a teen because he sucked and sat the bench and played the last inning in right field if your team was winning by a lot or losing by a lot. I wouldnt believe a thing you got to say about any ball player. Thats probably 70% of you Barry haters. The other 30% are sheep that fall in line and base there opinion with know knowledge. Why dont you all go find a mike vick blog or pac man jones or jose canseco or roger clemens. Suck it up fruit cups. He will be out of sight out of mind soon so let it rest. He is the greatest to player period.
