Big League Stew - MLB

Susan Slusser confirms some sad but not very surprising news out of Oakland this afternoon: Athletics pitcher Ben Sheets(notes) has a torn flexor tendon in his right elbow and will require season-ending surgery.

I guess I should have known better to write last week that it was a surprise Sheets was still healthy enough to serve as potential trade bait for contenders.

At any rate, if those terms mentioned above seem familiar, it's because they are. The same injury was discovered on Sheets just as he was coming to terms on a contract with the Texas Rangers before last season and the ensuing rehab cost him the entire 2009 season.

When he finally came back in 2010, he was only able to get a one-year contract — though it was worth $10 million — from GM Billy Beane and Oakland.

At age 32, Sheets is still young enough to fight back from another injury, but the question will be whether or not he has another long rehab stint in him.

Sites with much less restraint are already throwing around the phrase "career-ending," but the man himself has yet to mention it. Sheets has always seemed like he was only born to throw a baseball, so I'd figure that he'd try to make yet another comeback, no matter how difficult it will be.

Still, make no mistake: This is a very serious development for Sheets and it only adds to the tremendous peaks and valleys he's experienced as one of the most star-crossed pitchers of his generation. It was only two years ago that he was starting the All-Star Game in New York for the National League, but now he's looking at another of his patented major setbacks.

Man, gotta feel bad for Sheets. He's definitely had an up-and-down career. He was a remarkable pitcher on a few very, very bad Brewers teams in the early '00s, but lately he hasn't been much.

Some will argue that Ben Sheets was dealt a bad break. But today........today, I consider him to be the luckiest man on the face of the earth.

not suprising at all-this is what happens when you have all the talent in the world but don't work out and care about staying in shape-ask any Brewer fan and they can tell you how much Ben really cared about working out and staying in shape-he is the posterboy for injuries because of that

Eis, I disagree. It's not like the A's let a big free agent walk away in order to sign Sheets. They also tried to sign some other free agents, like Beltre and Scutaro, and even outbid other teams, but were told no thanks. They have an absurdly low payroll and routinely turn a small profit. So $10M on a one-year deal isn't a bad gamble. They had the money to spend, nobody better to spend it on, so why not? The potential was there. Sheets was possibly a few weeks from being traded into prospects. And if the A's had some insurance (my gut says no), this may not be as bad as it appears. I think Beane has made mistakes, but this signing was worth the obvious risk. Now, signing Oliver Perez, that's bats**t crazy.

Can't say as a dedicated Oakland fan that I am too dissapointed. Yes it is unfortunate and I wish him a speedy and full recovery but with the emergence of the young pitchers-Cahill, Gonzalez, Mazzaro-there wasnt much of a reason to have him in the rotation anyway. He just wasnt performing like a ten million dollar starter and with the Friday return of Brett Anderson, this starting rotation seems to be shaping into what the A's need for the rest of the year and beyond.

Another good move, Billy!! Overpay for an injury prone player. But $ 10 mil?? What did you see that the Brewers didn't? He's a great guy, but you don't pay him $10 mil, 'cause he's a great guy. Probably done now. What is this the 2nd or 3rd time for this?

I told you people a couple months ago, you couldn't count on Sheets. When he was with the Brewers when you needed him , he was alway hurt. So much for the hall of Fame? Now when they trhrow you under the bus, STAY THERE.

Yup Brain, he has to reinvent himself as a reliever. Hopefully a dominant closer. He's has to be at least good enough to close for about 5 teams.

Funny, how all you so-called baseball 'experts' on here have nothing to do w/any major league - much less minor league - baseball team! If your crystal ball was as reliable as your insidious mouths & pissing and moaning about this, that and another thing about baseball...I'm sure any baseball team in their right minds would hire you all in a heart beat! BUT...since that's never going to happen...STFU!

As "bad" as the Brewer's are thought to be, according to many here, at least they had the SENSE to NOT offer Benny a contract...even tho they did pay for his surgery after he QUIT playing

There have been far worse contracts than 1 yr/$10 mil for Ben Sheets. A's are still under Eric Chavez's 6 yr/$66 mil contract signed in '04, for instance.

I stopped following him once he left Milwaukee so I don't know his conditioning but he was never injured until he let himself get badly out of shape. He was downright fat at times.
