Big League Stew - MLB

Are you bored out of your mind with spring training yet? Have you abandoned it altogether and moved onto dreams of summer days and real baseball?

Don't worry, you're not alone.

In a story that sums up the dog days of the Grapefruit League in the worst best fashion imaginable, the Orioles' radio announcing team of Joe Angel and Fred Manfra weren't around for the final eight innings of Sunday's 5-1 exhibition win over the Mets in Fort Lauderdale.

The duo had announced the game's first inning when rain hit the park and started rendering the field unplayable. Angel and Manfra talked their way through 40 minutes of the delay before letting the boys back home resume their regular radio and then heading home.

But about an hour later, the groundskeepers got the field under control and play resumed without anyone in Baltimore's booth. According to the Baltimore Sun, Angel, Manfra and the engineer were told to call it an early day by their superiors at 105.7 The Fan. Angel has even written a letter to Orioles fans explaining that they would have stayed to broadcast the game but simply didn't have an engineer or any equipment around to do so.

Predictably, some Orioles fans who didn't have anything better to do with their weekend are upset, going as far to call the early dismissal "bush league." (How dare an engineer deprive them of hearing Adam Jones single twice!)

Now, I generally toe the line when it comes to holding people accountable for the jobs they're being paid for, but the bottom line here is that their bosses told them to call it quits. Is there anyone else out there who'd say no to the same order?

I'm surprised this is the first time it's ever happened at an Oriels game.

Nice of Joe to email, but I really don't see why some O's fans are making such a big deal about this. Don't get me wrong - I'm a huge O's fan, and I love listening to the games, and sure, I was looking forward to listening to the game yesterday, but you know what, life goes on. There are still 162 games to be broadcast this year, so I really don't see why this one non-broadcast has caused such an outcry...it is comical, for sure.

Then again people you gotta remember that this is the Baltimore Orioles! They haven't shown anything on the field for quite some time. They haven't been any good since the 70's. I am surprised that it hasn't happened more often.

With baseball being such an exciting sport, I'm surprised they don't have to hire people to go and wake up the sleeping (or drunk) fans that are left in their seats 5 hours after the games end!

I'm totally surprized that this doesn't happen more often, especially the way Baltimore has been playing the past couple of years. Then again, the announcers are being paid to be there.

Really wasn't their fault. Supervisor told them to go home! Anyway, it's only an exhibition game, not like it matters.

it's only spring training, who cares, as a die hard birds fan there is no better duo then Fred and Joe DURING the season. The two are excellent and i think every birds fan would agree. at this point of the season spring training is useless, missing one game isn't going to kill any of the morons out there who are angry. It's not like they didn't show up in the first place, they had reason to jet. Everyone gets all hyped up before they know the real story.
