Big League Stew - MLB

There's been a lot of 'sphere talk today about SI's just-released lists of the best and worst owners in sports and that comes as no surprise. The role of owner in sports is unparalleled when it comes to being a lightning rod for controversy.

Boston's triumvirate of John Henry, Tom Werner and Larry Lucchino were christened by SI as baseball's best owners, followed by the Angels' Arte Moreno, the Cardinals' William DeWitt, the Yankees' Steinbrenner family and the Rays' Stuart Sternberg.  No surprise that success — or at least the appearance of it — rules there.

Meanwhile, Orioles owner Peter Angelos heads up the list of baseball's worst purse-string holders, followed by the Rangers' Tom Hicks, the Royals' David Glass, the Marlins' Jeffrey Loria and the Nationals' Ted Lerner.

I don't have too many major bones to pick with the lists, at least past wanting to name Loria as the worst owner and knocking the Steinbrenners off the list after their new stadium fiasco.

I'm wondering what you think of those 20 other owners who didn't make either list. Should some owners like the Brewers' Mark Attanasio (above) get more credit and be mentioned as an owner that fans like? Do others deserve the brand of a 'bad owner?' If so, which ones?

Here in Chicago, I think the Tribune Co. (Cubs) and Jerry Reinsdorf (White Sox) fall into that faceless middle with their notable good moves being balanced out by their many bad ones. They're not among the greats, but it could be much, much worse.

What about your guy?

The Steinbrenner's are considered good owners? Good Lord! They probably paid someone at SI to have their name put up on top.

I think the Steinbrenners should make both lists...George is top 5 easily, whereas his sons clearly belong in the bottom 5.

How did John Moores not make the list from the Padres for worst owners? Yes he sold the team, but that sale does not complete for up to five years. Padres wont see the effects of Moorad for awhile.

The Yorks of SF Niner fame should be on the worsts lists, after running the greatest football franchise in history directly into the ground. Gutting the soul and brains of the franchise, including most notably Bill Walsh, and year after year picking worse and worse players while threatening to move to San Jose. Just awful. Steve Young, Brent Jones et al need to buy the team and turn things around there.

maxmoney...you do know that this is a baseball blog, right?
We do like Attanasio here in WI, but it also doesn't hurt that he's not a Selig.

Angelos' worst aspect is that he won't even pay his front office people enough, let alone the players. Cheap all over.

mark attanasio is an incredible owner of the milwaukee brewers. I am proud to be a brewers fan and even more proud to have him as our owner...heck, he even offered CC $100 million! Best owner in my book for small market clubs

Hard to figure the Steindummies being on the list today, unless total spending is the deciding factor regardless of success. Every bad personnnel decision--and that means most of the personnel decisions--since 2001 was driven by the Steindummies.

    Shakespeare,
Dolan is not a bad owner...he is hands off when it comes to managing the team and allows Shapiro and co to run the team. They revolutionized the whole business model that has worked for Tampa and was noted there in the article.

How can the Dolans' ownership of the Knicks not get them on the top of the worst list? Lil Arseface Jimmy Dolan must have been playing slap and tickle with Thomas to have kept him around so long. He has made the Knicks into a pathetic joke.

How about any ownership group of the Chicago Cubs?!
What does World War I, the invention of radio, the invention of tv, and William Howard Taft as President have in common? They all happened after the Cubs last world championship.

Drayton McLane is a great owner. He never breaks the bank, but always fields a competitive team. Thank goodness for him, or else we would still be playing in the astrodome.

    #1,
Dolan didn't make the worst list because people who aren't idiots realize he's done a LOT with little support. The Indians have finished in the bottom third in attendance for the last few years.....
Yet Dolan is shelling out a payroll that is in the TOP HALF! Only idiot fans think Dolan is a terrible owner. He is actually a very good one. He started up STO and got the stadium a better naming rights deal (yes, I liked the old name, but he needs to generate money in one of the poorest economic cities in the country).
ha, and to eveyrone else that keeps bring up Jimmy Dolan....I'm assuming that's not who #1 was talkign about. this was a baseball blog.....Jimmy Dolan is not the Dolan that owns the Indians.....it's Larry Dolan. They are related though.

steins invest in their team. and the new stadium rules, aside from a few minor flaws.... no need to knock them out of the top 5.

Not a fan but pirates owner needs to be on this list. They sell sell sell and then let their good players go for nothing in return. Ex. Jason Bay

saucy, if the standard is putting the best team on the field, my dog could get pick a better team with their payroll, and far fewer 'roiders.
