Big League Stew - MLB

The New York Yankees have had 19 100-win seasons and 27 championships in the 109-year history of their franchise. The 2009 championship team marks the 11th time in franchise history that the team has won at least 103 games. It's the sixth of those eleven 103 victory-plus teams to go all the way.

The five winningest Yankee teams — 1927, 1932, 1939, 1961, and 1998 — all won between 106 and 114 games in the regular season and went a combined 27-3 in the postseason en route to five of the most famous championships in history. Their shadows loom large over all other Yankee teams, just as the Yankees themselves loom large over the rest of the league. Each had a run differential over 200 runs. The 1939 Yankees, behind Joe DiMaggio's first MVP campaign, had a mind-boggling run differential of 411 runs over 154 games, which translates to 2.7 runs per game and the top spot on ESPN's ranking of all the Yankee title teams. (The '09 squad is ranked 10th on that list.)

By contrast, the 2009 Yanks lost four playoff games in this postseason (which included two more rounds than the first four teams mentioned had to play). The '09 Yankee squad also finished second in baseball with a run differential of 162, exactly one run a game.

Good, of course, but not historic — it's only the 40th-best differential in Yankee history.

In other words, 2009 may be the most expensive Yankee championship in history, but it's far from the best — more 1999 than '98. The offense was terrific, leading the majors with 915 runs and a club-record 244 homers.

But the pitching was merely pedestrian, as the team allowed slightly more than the major league average of runs. By the time the World Series rolled around Joe Girardi could trust only three starters and one reliever. They were far from the halcyon days a decade ago of Mendoza-Stanton-Nelson-Rivera, despite my expectations to the contrary.

The best Yankee teams have had both dominant pitching and dominant hitting, but when push comes to shove the Yankees have always made their name — and their nickname — on their offense. The 1920s Yankees basically invented the modern offense, centered around sluggers in the No. 3 and No. 4 holes and supplemented by mashers throughout the lineup with few weak hitters anywhere on the diamond. The template hasn't changed much in the four score and several years since then.

These Yankees arguably have the best infield in franchise history, even compared to the highest-scoring offense in Yankee history, the '31 Yanks, with Hall of Fame C Bill Dickey, 1B Lou Gehrig, 2B Tony Lazzeri, and 3B Joe Sewell. In 1931, Lazzeri, Sewell, and light-hitting shortstop Lyn Lary all put up an OPS under .800, and Dickey's was only .820. The five combined for 76 homers and 46 of those were from Gehrig.

By contrast, every 2009 infielder had an OPS over .871, and though no one had more than Mark Teixeira's(notes) 39 homers, the five combined for 134 round trips.

No, they weren't quite as balanced top to bottom as they were in 1998, or 1927. But they were still the best team in baseball. And when you've reached the point where you start inspiring comparisons to the best Yankee squads of all time, you're a pretty good team.

I love being a fan of a team with an ownership group like this. not many other fans can call 9 years "a long time coming" between championships. If only the Steinbrenner family would buy the Knicks and Raiders I could enjoy the Winter as well

Everyone else can hate all they want, but the fact remains that these Yankees won the World Series on the FIELD, and not with their checkbooks.

I've only been alive for 35 years and and 7 WS, so really can only judge them. Of those would I probably put it like 5 behind 1996, 1998, 1977, and 2000. Why that order; 1996 ended a huge drought (far worse than the current one, the 80's were very tough on Yankee fans, and for my age was the first one I could truly appreciate), 1998 was one of the greatest seasons and teams of all time, 1977 ended another huge drought, 2000 because it was against the Mets.

When you are allowed to spend a billion dollars on your team, why not even have a baseball season, just call it Yankees Ball and spare the fans the lack of drama.

For those who complain about the amount of money the Yankees spend ---- they did not create the current situation in baseball, neither did Bud Selig. You can thank Andy Messerschmidt for ushering in free agency, and the players union who DO NOT want a salary cap of any sort.
The Yankees are strictly operating within the current framework, nothing more.

Yanks spend $$$ who cares Most teams spend as much as they can afford and it's no guarantee for being NO1 as its taken all theses years plus last year not even the playoffs so try coming up with something better Like maybe UFOs or gremlins or a robot built to look like a camera. 27 is a lot PLUS they won a bunch of times when everybody was on even terms as far as $$$ gos so look but that little guy under your bed is leprechaun and just wants his gold.

2009 Yanks were definitely the best since '98 and better than the '77~'78 teams that I got to see. The Yanks really turned it on in June and the second-half brought back memories of '98. For the '10 Yanks to approach the '98 team, the Yanks need to add another reliable starter (hopefully Lackey), have Wang return to '06~'07 form, add a bat in the OF (Holliday), and have A-Rod have a monster MVP season. I can see it happening. I do believe that we're at the start of a new dynasty that can win two more in a row. I view dynasty as a team that can win 3 out of 4 years or 3 straight. The 70's team that I observed as a kid doesn't quite measure up to what I'd call a true dynasty like the late-90's Yanks.

Ranks around those late 1990s-2000 teams where they were led by juicers. This time they had A-Rod. Back then they had Giambi, Clemens, Pettitte, etc.

All this talk of money and the whole process being unfair because the Yankees are in a big market does not hold up in the light of history. Los Angeles is a huge market but since the Yanks last won the WS, it has produced exactly one World Champ. Chicago is a very, very big market and in that same time frame it has produced exactly one champ. Philadelphia to its credit has also produced one from a pretty big market, but that is all, since 1980. Being a Yankee fan I am not one to extol the virtues of the Red Sox, but in that time frame they have won the same number as LA and Chicago combined and they are a much, much smaller market. Oh, and the Marlins who are super small have managed to do the same thing in those nine years. And in the last 25 years the Twins, the poster boy for small markets, have won as many as LA and one more than Chicago and Philly, and the same number as Boston. Do the larger markets have an advantage....yes... but if that was it alone then LA, Chicago, Philly and Atlanta should have more WS rings than Boston, Fla. and the Twins. They do not! And frankly the Yankees spent tons of money for nearly a decade and didn't even make the playoffs in '08. It is still mostly about how you spend it, not just if you spend it. Just ask Albert Belle, Carl Pavano and Mr. Santana of the Mets.

There are whiners and winners. In between are alot of hard working people trying to make their ends meet. As for the whiners who keep posting, Yankees have more money...it isn't fair...it isn't fair! GROW UP! You're worse than a bunch of little kids. And one last thing, try not to crap yourself next time your team fails to make the playoffs and we're in the World Series again.

    @ steve r-
Giambi was never on a Yankee world series team, and Clemens was only on 2 of the 4 (1999 & 2000). Pettite yes, but the core of those teams were Bernie, Oneill, Tino, Brosious, Jeter, Posoda, and Mariano. Not one has ever been proven to have taken steroids (besides Pettite).

Pettitte used HGH, not steroids, and only after 2000 so far as we know and only recovering from an injury. HGH was not illegal at the time and is not by itself a long-term performance enhancer. It may speed healing and permit more intense workouts. I am not approving of his usage, but we should get our facts straight. He has told the truth and it is time to move past that and admire his courage and moxie. That said, I still think this team can grow if God permits. Melky and Gardiner have substantial upsides. Melky has a knack of growing under pressure, going back to his play against the Red Sox and his HR in the bug game against Cleveland. I still think Cano is just beginning to get the feel of the post-season. He was excellent defensively and hit better before the WS. Be patient -- look how long it took for A-Rod to reach his potential in the post-season. Looking long-term, Pena and Cervelli may squeeze their way. I also agree that Lackey would probably be a good addition if healthy -- he has been a pressure pitcher and he certainly has tenacity.

last i checked, the yankees dont win every year so anyone who says its about payroll clearly doesnt know what they are talking about. yankees were winning an average of 2+ WS championships a decade way before free agency and players unions. at one point, they got Lou Gehrig for $5,000. GO YANKEES!!!

Losers always hate the winners. Been like that since the beginning of time. Winners generally don't care about the losers but hate them because all that losers ever really do is whine. What you see in life, you see on internet blogs such as these.

Let's stop with all the talk about how the Yankees have more money than anybody else, because although this may be true ,as we have learned with everything in life it is not about how much youhave? it's about how you use what you've got. Now as far as comparing them to Yankee teams of the past, please get serious. The Jackson led team of the 70's won back to back world series, the Jeter led team of the 90's 3straight, the Dimaggio led team of 50's 4 straight, and what I consider the best of all the Gehrig led 30's 4 straight w/16wand 3losses. This current team has won "1" in a row, which I think will be all they accomplish because I think management will foolishly let key components get away.

genius, you might be the dumbest person on here, they won by buying the most expensive-(means best in case you need help-far from a genius) free agents there were, like every year, Are all you bandwagon spankee fans that blind? Did you know the spankees threatened to sue baseball if a salary cap was instituted??? why? because they would have to rely on their weak farm system, Does anyone think fat Joba, or Hughes would win anything???? If they were so smart they would work on some cheap home grown talent, Don't bring up Posada-most overrated player in baseball, or Jeter, and Mariano, their time is almost over, and who will fill their shoes? Joba???????????? He should be in the minors, He's not that good. Anyway thank god another long season is over, which football team do you like? whoever wins the Super Bowl? were you a Yankee fan from 77 to 96? probably not. They didn't win anything.

How about this Spankee bandwagoners-salary cap? probably the scariest words ever for you. It would mean you couldn't buy everyone, Stop acting like spending 70 million more than the next highest team means nothing, Now you are just being dumb! Someday when you grow up, check out NFL, NHL, NBA, they have salary caps to stop just what the Yankees do. One day it'll happen and then you'll have nothing to brag about, Hughes, Joba, Gardner won't even win the AL east.

Wow Guy, you are pretty stupid. Who are you a fan of? A team that DIDN'T win? Jealousy is not a good thing. And you think a salary cap will change anything? You are an IDIOT!!!! A salary cap won't give money to all the teams that have no money and never compete. It will prevent the Yanks from spending money, sure, but you think it will change ANYTHING? Yankees will still get all their players. Players will have lesser contracts, but the teams will all be the same. Players come and play for the Yankees for more than just money. They come because they are the greatest franchise in the HISTORY OF SPORTS!!!!!!!!!! They would come for less money if they had too. The Yankees often bid against themselves when they don't need too, or offer more money than they need too because they can afford it. A salary cap would stop them from doing that but it wouldn't change anything. Besides, look at the NFL, NBA. In those leagues, the SAME TEAMS are in the playoffs EVERY SINGLE YEAR!!!! Its is MUCH more predictable than baseball, even with your "salary cap". In baseball, different teams are in the playoffs every year. No teams have repeated since the late '90s. In basketball, it's always the same story. Lakers, Celtics, Cavs, last year it was the Magic, but it's ALWAYS the same teams competing!!! Football. Patriots, Colts are always at the top. And it doesn't seem to be changing. Baseball? Different teams are in the playoffs every year. Yankees didn't even get into the postseason last year with a higher payroll. Now they win one and you give an idiot rant? I see by your user name that you really have no life so why don't you go and get one! And get used to this. Yankees didn't break any rules. They spent the money they had. If whoever your team had the money, would you want them to spend it and win, or pocket it and come in last place? It's a no brainer to me.
By the way, you think Hughes and Joba won't win anything? Did you see Hughes this year? At all? Or Joba the last three years? And you think these guys suck? Based on what? Hughes and Joba both have bright futures ahead of them.
Again, go and get a life.
