Big League Stew - MLB

Like 2008's Nail in the Coffin series, 2009's Walk Toward The Light aims to memorialize the eliminated teams that are gone and will likely be forgotten.

San Diego Padres

Current record 71-83

Season highlight They were dancing in the streets of the Gaslamp District on May 21 after hearing the news that Jake Peavy(notes) had exercised his no-trade clause and would be staying with the Padres instead of heading to Chicago to become a White Sock. So what if his decision had more to do with switching leagues and playing for Ozzie Guillen and moving to a team that was really no great shakes? So what if it wouldn't ensure he'd remain a Padre for future years or keep him from an upcoming DL stint? Back on that day, it wasn't a sad day to be a Padres fan (which is more than you can say for most days, of course).

Season lowlight Peavy's inevitable departure finally came on July 31 and it occurred under the most surprising of circumstances. Not only was he traded away at the last possible second on deadline day, but he waived his no-trade clause for the White Sox, the team he originally shunned. The lesson that should be learned by the U.S. government? Two months of watching the Pads' offense will get even the most zealous zealot to break.

We knew the Padres were done for when ... they were no-hit by the Giants' Jonathan Sanchez on July 11. Of course, it was quite obvious that San Diego wasn't going to contend much sooner than this contest, but being no-hit by the toothless Sanchez was an affirmation of the Padres' toothless offense outside of Adrian Gonzalez(notes)

The Stew's favorite posts featuring the Padres

Adrian Gonzalez is Mr. Anonymous As he puts the final touches on another amazing season of offense, the Padres' first baseman remains the best player the casual fan has never heard of. But hey, at least he's been featured in The Onion.

Bees! Bees! Bees everywhere! Padres fans often email and ask: "Hey, what's it going to take to get the Friars on the Stew?" I write back and link them to this incident, which featured a swarm of bees taking over Petco Park's outfield. The truth stings.

Gonzalez Bros. make Answer Man history Another good way is to have two charismatic baseball-playing brothers answer questions in the first-ever dual Answer Men session. Both Adrian and Edgar come off as guys you want to root for and this super sitdown remains my favorite interview that DB has done in 2009.

Wii Fit launches Heath Bell into stardom He had a tough gig trying to fill Trevor Hoffman's(notes) huge shoes, but Heath Bell(notes) did about as good of a job — if not better — than expected. He first made news this season upon announcing that he had lost 25 pounds via the Wii Fit, then garnered more attention when he ripped ESPN's East Coast bias and then made the National League All-Star Game. He was credited with the loss in St. Louis, but he made up for it with this retelling of his circuitous route to Busch Stadium.

Everth Cabrera can fly The Padres have some good young parts they can point to and their Rule 5 defensive wizard at short is one of them. Just 22 years old, folks.

Matt Bush takes place among history's biggest draft busts They usually describe failed No. 1 picks as "forgettable," but Matt Bush only wishes we could forget about the video of him crying while being hogtied by police. If there's ever a documentary made on the downfall of the Padres, I'm pretty sure this clip will lead it.

What the team needs to do for 2010 GM Kevin Towers is going around and telling folks that the Padres could be the 2010 Giants. I'm not sure why you'd try to sell your fans on the prospect of being an offensively-challenged team that misses the playoffs – heck, the Padres already fit that bill — but perhaps fooling your fans into thinking there's a Tim Lincecum(notes) or Matt Cain(notes) on the way is what it has come to in San Diego.

The offseason is sure to be full of Adrian Gonzalez trade rumors and Towers has a tough decision to make. Trading a first baseman for a haul of rebuilding prospects seems like a no-brainer, but when you figure A-Gone is the face of a franchise that is slipping with his fanbase, it becomes quite clear that there are no easy answers.

Nice canned, "the Padres suck" article. Of course, you might also have mentioned their record of 33-21 since July 28th is the third best in the NL, but that would ruin your piece. This in no way resembles the scary-bad team that started the season.

The Padres are a vastly improved team over what they were earlier this season. Some of it is from obtaining better players and some of it from young players they already have developing into major leaguers. Maybe you haven't noticed how they're been knocking off contending clubs, taking 2 of 3 the last couple of months, but those contending clubs have noticed. Too late for the Padres this year, but watch out next year.

i'm going to agree about the Padres in 2010. They've been without Chris Young and Jake Peavy for just about the whole season, those two parts alone could have given the 2009 season a different look. With Peavy gone it's hard to say since their rotation got younger during the season.
Mat Latos and Clayton Richard are looking good. Latos has some work under his belt and can contribute coming up. Richard doesn't look as good as Latos but there's still something there. Throw in consistent playing time for Venable and Cabrera with a little consistency from Kouzmanoff and Headley and I think these guys are in it next year.

Why is it videos like that are let out into the public? It's so disgusting to just humiliate someone for no reason than to fill a bad news show or a pointless blog on yahoo sports.

I'm sorry you hate the Giants so much, but we haven't missed the playoffs quite yet, and Sanchez is anything but toothless. He's Oliver Perez right now, and almost Randy Johnson when he has control. The guy has major potential and it's starting to show.

They've done better than anyone expected after trading Peavy but they do have some decent players who've lived up to expectations. They have already won over 70 games and probably won't lose 90.

Its about time some player said some things that half the fanbase agrees with. MLB Network FTW.. not AS biased and honest about the business.

Kevin Ka-stupid might try to look toward light as a blogger. He might want to make sure the Giants are completely out of it and make sure that The padres have been playing anything but great baseball the last two months. Without Jake Peavy and Young. Kevin Correia is their ace.
Matt Bush was a bust about 100 years ago.
I wasn't dancing in the street in the gaslamp when Peavy excercised his no-trade clause because I am a fan who understands that Peavy, a hard- throwing not-quite-six-footer and proven to be injury prone, gave the Padres and only the padres his best years. I love the guy and the last few years were a blast.
A-gone being anonymous- Great hitter on a losing team in a small market. Not the first to to be unappreciated by the casual fan. There's a freaking gem of an observation by the 'Duk. As if Hanley Ramirez and Ian Kinsler are completely different stories. Good players on bad teams who aren't pushing Nike and shiny watches every other commercial break.
The Heath Bell thing is irrelevant.
Have you ever watched Sanchez pitch?

The Peavy trade was a good one, even though he pitched 7 innings of shut-out ball Friday night.... Peavy was too expensive, too injury-prone, and too much of a choker in big games (see all his play-off starts AND the 163rd game of '07 against Colorado); granted, the guy won strikeout titles, the e.r.a. "crown" opne year, and we wouldn't have even been IN the play-offs (or the race for them) were it not for Peavy.... Nonetheless, we got 4 good arms for him, and I think at least two of them will be effective -- and all 4 will cost WAY less (i.e. a quarter of Peavy's salary at most -- at least for a couple of years).... Adrian will remain here.... Sure you'd like more starting pitching, and a couple of more productive bats, but I don't think the team actually needs to do much in the off-season.... Why shake up a team that has been playing over .600 ball for the last couple months?... Just get and keep everyone healthy, and there will be some TOUGH decisions come next spring about who'll be on the opening day roster.

As said before the Pads have been playing great ball! The young kids on this team have been playing their hearts out. Gwynn, Cabrera, Latos, Venable all of these guys have been playing great ball. Another interesting little tidbit about this team was around the trading deadline quite a few teams came to Kevin Towers about David Eckstien. Kevin went to Ecks and asked him if he wanted to go play for a contender. Ecks said no, he was so impressed with the young guys on this team that he wanted to stay and be a mentor for them. He also said that having the opportunity to play next to a player as special as Cabrera doesnt come along any day. Ecks said that Darin Erstad was the guy who showed him the right way to play the game, and he wanted the opportunity to be that guy. If a gamer like ecks wants to stay with a team because he sees the potential that is good enough for me.
