Big League Stew - MLB

Big League Stew has whittled down the myriad reasons to pull for the Philadelphia Phillies and Tampa Bay Rays to five apiece. They are not in any particular order. And, no, gambling is not a good-enough reason to be listed here.

Go Phillies, because:

1. Take Mitch Williams totally off the hook for ‘93: The enduring image of the Phillies in the World Series is "Wild Thing" allowing Joe Carter's game-ending, Series-clinching homer in Game 6. Philly fans, mostly, have long forgiven Williams for his disastrous Series, though even in success he pitched on the edge of disaster. That was part of the fun; he really did pitch like his "hair was on fire."

2. Chase Utley loves dogs: The Phillies second baseman (right), who notoriously stood up to Yankees fans who booed him (for some reason) during All-Star Home Run Derby, also stands up for those canines who cannot defend themselves from human abusers. Utley and his wife, Jen, who volunteers for the SPCA, put their money and time into rescuing dogs who need it. Dog is man's best friend, which means your terrier is barking for the Phillies this fall. Join with Scruffy.

3. They are way behind in World Series titles: America claims to love an underdog, which explains some of the devotion to the Cubs. But if you want to buy into a team's sorry history, you're shopping in the wrong part of town. Philly will get you much less bang for your buck: one, count it, one world championship since 1883, and this is their sixth pennant. In 126 years! The Cubs have 16 pennants and two mighty titles. They're a bunch of martini-sipping socialites in comparisons.

4. It's better to be with Phillies fans than against them: Using the common stereotypes, here's an outsider's view of Phillies fans: They are loyal like Cubs fans, knowledgeable like Red Sox fans, profane like Yankees (or Mets) fans, have a sense of community like Cardinals fans, are circumspect like White Sox fans and wacko like A's fans. To the mix, they add a passion that is uniquely Philadelphian, making for a fun and creative fanbase, but one that becomes obnoxious if you get on its bad side. So don't, and just pull for the Phillies. OK, pal?

5. Don't disappoint your grandfather, Jamie Moyer: OK, the Phillies left-hander probably is not your grandfather, but he might have been gramps' favorite player as a kid. Listed at 45 years old, Moyer won 16 games in the regular season despite being oh-so-close to collecting on his pension, IRA and social security. Funny thing, it was probably his ninth- or 10th-best season, statistically. He's not a Hall of Famer, but he is a son of a gun. Give him a hug and listen to his WWII stories, but not right now. He's napping.

* * *

Go Rays, because:

1. They're not the Yankees or Red Sox: Oh, how some fans love to loathe the twin evil empires in the northeast and how both spend their way to championships. Well, along comes an interloper from the same division as the supposed tyrants, and it's not even the Orioles or Blue Jays but instead the Rays, who spent the past decade mostly stuck to the bottom of the AL East. You don't have to anti-New York/Boston faction to root for the youngsters from Tampa Bay, but if you are, and a lot of you are, here's your champion.

2. Carlos Pena is an awesome guy: Not because of an extraordinary athletic feat, or a impressive charitable act, although he probably holds his own both places, but Pena (right) is just the kind of guy you'd want your son to grow up to be. Born in the Dominican Republic, moved to Massachusetts as a teen-ager, pursued electrical engineering at Northeastern in addition to baseball. Multilingual (Spanish, English, also dabbles in Italian). A big reader. Smart, but more importantly, thoughtful. Polite. Experienced failure multiple times but didn't give up. Pleasant. Actually, there are lots of guys on both teams like this, but Pena is first among equals.

3. Joe Maddon makes math fun: Not since it was marketed to kids trying to figure out batting averages and ERAs has math received such a boost from baseball. Rays manager Joe Maddon created a T-shirt, an equation and a revolution in spring training with his "9=8" movement. Talk about an irrational equation (maybe it was his glasses talking) but it worked for the Rays, who proved that a team that plays its best every 9 innings will find itself among the 8 still playing in October. Albert Einstein once said: "You teach me baseball and I'll teach you relativity... no we must not. You will learn about relativity faster than I learn baseball." Well, here the two finally have kind of met.

4. Do it for the kids: Here's a limb: Evan Longoria and B.J. Upton are the Paul Molitor and Robin Yount of their day. Two young players on the same team in the early stages of Hall-of-Fame careers. Molitor and Yount were actually several years into their careers by the time the Brewers reached the World Series in '82. Regardless, here's the chance to someday annoy regale your grandkids with tales of Evan and B.J. in their really early 20s.

5. What pressure?: How many times has a team with exponentially more collective experience than the Rays lost its edge in a playoff series and never recovered? Lots, and lots of examples. After Boston made the second-largest comeback in playoff history in Game 5 of the ALCS, the biggest comeback ever in an elimination game, the Rays were expected to be sent packing like the Indians in '07 and the Yankees in '04. But the Rays, as they had in the regular season, either shook off the pressure or made it work for them. They even got younger as the game went on, putting in 22-year-old rookie David Price, with his month of major league experience, to close Game 7. This is the coolest team in the league, using every definition of the word.

Turn Lidge into the new Mitch Williams. That'd be fun to watch.

I'm pretty sure it was Mets fans who booed Utley at the All Star Game. Yankee fans were probably indifferent.
And you forgot to call the Philly fans bandwagoners, like their shortstop did.

Phils will not be able to compete with the high power offense of the Rays. Phils are okay from 1-4, after that, the bats will stay silent minus VICTORY---NO.

as a philly fan, I am loving being an under dog going into the world series, all the experts and wagers picked rays to win this, but let me remind you, we were underdog going into this season against mets, underdog going against brewers, underdog going against dodgers....one more time, n y'all will respect the phillies.....we will win 1 game (cole hamels) out of 2 in tampa, 2 in philly (joe blanton and cole hamels) and last 1 in tampa bay (brett myers)....you betch'ya!!! go phillies....

JC is on drugs. Phillies are "okay" from 1-7 for sure and our #8 hitter is batting over .270 in the playoffs. Victorino bats #6, what did he do last series?! Throw in a DH like Stairs or Dobbs and I like the Phillies chances. Where were the Rays bats games 5 and 6? They are not that good at the plate. It will be a great series and, YES, the Phillies will have their oppportunities to win it all.

Saro G you are an idiot. Philly fans bandwagoners?? What about you front-running fraud Tampa Bay Devil Rays fans. Before this season, did any of you supposed fans even know where Tropicana "Field" was, or that you had a major league team in Tampa Bay??
I'm not even going to mention the fact that Tropicana "field" might be the worst stadium in the history of major league baseball (that includes our dearly departed Veterans Stadium). Can you not afford a dirt warning track down there?? You have to paint the turf brown for a warning track??
    Go Phils!!!!

Right on, JD..............made no difference that the Rays were in first place for most of the season, you could buy a ticket on game day, then sit just about anywhere you wanted in the Trop. And the noise in that place - YIKES!!! Even the pitchers took to wearing earplugs! As one Red Sox fan was quoted, "We don't need no stinkin' cowbells; we make our own noise!!"

    # 5: I don't recall the Phils being underdogs against the Brewers.
And all this talk bout bandwagons, they exist in every city, it jus sucks when your MVP shortstop throws his fans under the bus like that.
    Thats gotta hurt!!!

As Go Phillies said, we were underdogs the whole way this season. The Rays almost gagged hard in the ALCS, you think this is going to have less pressure? My thinking is after they get down some they figure they have more years to win this thing. Maddon may try and outsmart himself too when they are in Phila, trying to prove he can do the double switch thing, it cost them games 5 and 6 in the ALCS. Phils win games 1 and 5 with Hamels so they only need two of the other five. Phillies in 5 or 6.

The Phillies are a good team, but not that great against good opponents.
They were ONLY15-21 against the Marlins and Mets ( if you can call those teams good ), and
they were 26-10 against the lowly Nationals and Braves. They were only 4-11 in interleague games.
The Rays were 12-6 in interleague games. GO RAYS !!!

You know whats going to be great? When the Phillies fans at Game 1 are louder then the Rays fans. How gay is it that you need cowbells to make noise? Try leaving the cowbells at home and actually selling out the stadium. How can you be a die hard Rays fan? Who did you people root for in 1997?

Philly fans are making alot of noise over nothing. Who have you beaten ? The Brewers and Dodgers ??? Niether team would even be able to sniff the playoffs if they were in the American Leage. Time to play the big boys now. When it's all over, you'll have the same sad, disgusted faces that both SOX fans have now.

    # 13. every time j-roll throw a challenge, phillies as a team have overcome....remember how mets delgado throw out a challenge at the beginning of the season? nothing to take away from rays, so far phillies n rays are both on same page, i just hate when they discriminate nlcs in world series....if we can shut down rays bats, i think we have a good chance to win this series. game 1 & game 5 (cole hamels), game 3 (moyer) at home, he will step up big time and game 6 (brett myers)...who better than him knows how to shut down this...? these are just my predictions. what ever happens, this is going to be wonderful series, me n my mates here at us army base in carribean are pumped up......lets go phillies!!!! oo n wats up with these duckies.....? j-roll is on a misssion again....4 more wins!

@ Brian W #15: Who cares about the regular season at this point and how x team did against y team during that time? The postseason is a whole new season. If these "good opponents" stepped up to the plate to actually have made it to the postseason, like the Phils, they would have. They did not. The teams that did in the NL-Cubbies, Dodgers, and Brewers-had their chance and the Fightin's beat 2 of 3 of them, and in convincing fashion.
@Brian W #19: Blah blah blah. Who did you beat? The reigning World Series champs to be sure, but A) it took the Rays 7 games to do it after blowing a 3-1 game lead and B) time is taking its toll on the banged-up Sox. A tweak here or there in the lineup by Francona and you'd be the ones sitting at home crying on your oversized pillows about the woulda, coulda, shoulda's.
By the way, show some respect, would you? Besides, it's easy to be a Rays fan...now that they're playing for the World Series. I wonder how much of a loyal fan you'd be for the Rays if they hadn't made it to the playoffs.
C'mon Fightin' Phils! It's going to be a good series, but I'm saying experience plays out with Philly. Phils in 6 or 7.
