A few quick links to start your day ...
• Huzzah! We're guaranteed some actual baseball news today when the Hall of Fame announces its 2009 induction class at 2 p.m. ET. It'll be televised on both MLB Network and MLB.com. Until then, try to memorize the drinking game we'll all be playing during Rickey Henderson's acceptance speech next summer. [RazzBall]
• Bert Blyleven doesn't plan on watching today's announcement, nor does he expect to get in. Only once — last year — did he make the mistake of staying home and watching the totals come in with his wife. "We just kind of looked at each other after I was in fourth place," Blyleven said, "and I said we'll never do that again." [Pioneer Press]
• Our own Gordon Edes details why he became one of the few and the proud: A first-time Mark McGwire voter this time around. [Yahoo! Sports]
• Not only is Michael Young anti-hip bump fight, he's also anti-playing third base. As such, he's requested a trade from the Rangers, which has some Dallas/Ft. Worth fans thinking that'd free up enough payroll to go after Orlando Cabrera and Ben Sheets. [Lone Star Ball]
• Should one of the old Shawon-o-Meter Guys be allowed to sing Take Me Out To The Ballgame at Wrigley Field? A few Cubs fans don't think so. [Hire Jim Essian]

As you might guess, I'm a Cardinal fan, but I am firmly against voting Mark McGwire into the Hall of Fame. I consider his drug-powered years as a Cardinal, and Tony LaRussa's frequent assertions that Mac's career was steroid-free (assertions which seem like they will be at least an annual thing before HOF voting time), to be stains on the team, ongoing ones.
Sure, in 1998 I fell under the spell of the home run race, but only partly, since even the "weaker" PEDs Mac did admit to, they were tainting his ongoing achievement. Still, you couldn't help getting amazed by the way he crushed the ball--just the immediate sensation, not what was behind it. I mean, I even felt a little thrilled more than once to see Sammy send one out onto Sheffield--just the immediate sensation, before I caught myself and again became mindful of the team behind it!
Edes says he can't be a judge of who in the Steroids Era was clean and who was not. Wrong--you =can=judge certain of the players, especially those who became such giants of the sport due to wrong substances. You can penalize them not only for a "single bad decision" or however Edes put it, but for an ongoing, career-sustaining, career-superpowering-up lifestyle of =many= such bad decisions. Furthermore, you practically have the =responsibility= to penalize them for failing to come clean about their dirtiness, a failure that multiplies the original offense.
