Big League Stew - MLB

A few money links to start your day ...

• According to Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times, the Dodgers' latest rejected offer to Manny Ramirez followed the age-old economic principle of "We will gladly pay you on Tuesday for a hamburger home run or two today."

While Hernandez's source says both sides liked the 2-year, $45 million offer, Ramirez and Scott Boras weren't on board with the deferred payments included in the deal. Reportedly, Man-Ram would've received payments of $10 million in '09 and '10 and the rest would be paid over the next three years from '11-'13 without the addition of accrued interest.

Since deferred payments are a common part of MLB's monster contracts and since many players have to wait much, much longer to receive them, I've cooked up an interesting theory that has absolutely no basis in fact: Perhaps Ramirez has run into some financial trouble and needs cold, hard cash on hand right this instant?

Interesting Theory With No Basis In Fact #2: Manny is an economic Nostradamus and wishes to be paid in gold bars before the market completely implodes.  [LA Times]

But before you bite into that bratwurst, remember one thing: It's Friday and it's Lent. Bring on the fish fry! [Brew Crew Ball]

Trevor Hoffman entered Thursday's game to the familiar strains of AC/DC's Hells Bells. But that's a San Diego-only thing, Hoffman says, and he'll be coming out to another tune next appearance. Since we're talking about Milwaukee here, may I suggest the Too Fat Polka? (I know it's early, but alll together now! "I don't want her, you can have her, she's too fat for me!") [Gaslamp Ball]

Why is it we let people like Manny ruin baseball. He is not bigger than the game but teams still throw money at him like he's a one man show. Dodger's just say no! Let someone else waste their money. Manny only cares about Manny not the team. Look at Arod, what does he do when it counts. He's a major embaressment to the Yankees as well as baseball. Time for baseball to right the ship.

I think the Dodgers need to put the $25M back in their pocket and close the book on Manny and move on.

Manny is only turning down the offer cause he's not ready to go to spring training his history is late for camp and then some . So wait a week and give him the same offer and word it differently and he'll be in camp a week or so from then . I wonder what's in store for the Dodgers this year will they get the happy Manny or the Spacepuppy Manny I'm betting the later .

I agree with billcole. Manny is just lazy and doesn't want to go back to work yet. I wouldn't be surprised if he skips out on all of spring training before signing.

I reacted with anger when I first heard about his rejection. After I got more information I cooled down. They want to spread his salary out for several years with no interest penalty. This is something both side can work with. Let's face the facts, if you are a Dodger fan, you want to see Manny wearing Dodger blue. This could be our year and it will be better with Manny than without him.

no one can question mannys talent but he is a lazy goldbrick, undeserving of the big bucks. Any player who will not give 100% effort is not worth the respect of the fans and teammates. Let him and Boras sit out a year.It might mute their greed somewhat to see the game can survive without them. Baseball fans deserve to see players that love the game and want to play , not overpayed primmadonnas.

he will sign with yankees after spring training. they would not sign him and not let him stay out of spring training. he wants to play with his buddy a-rod.its only a mini drama yankees always drop a bomb during or at the end of spring training.

Don't the Yankees have a half a billion dollar payroll already? Maybe his good buddy Albert will re-structure his deal to play with Manny. St. Louis would love him, 'cept, no money. oh, well.
