5 quick baseball links to start your day ...

1. If you're allergic to peanuts — and my sympathies for that tragic misfortune, if you are — Seattle's Safeco Field will be the place to be on Aug. 5 and Sept. 9. The stadium staff there is planning to make two sections "peanut-controlled" zones, cleaning each before the game and banning the sale of peanuts at nearby concession stands so those afflicted by the food allergy can watch the game without worry.

The Cardinals also held aside a peanut-free section earlier this week (the Twins, last month, too), but the concept isn't limited to the bigs. A minor league team in suburban Chicago made its entire stadium peanut-free earlier this month and the Nashua Pride in New Hampshire have been peanut-free all season.

Though it might seem sacrilegious to some of us shell-cracking folk to not be able to buy peanuts at a baseball game, I don't have much of a problem abstaining for a game or two a year. Peanuts can be potentially deadly to some people and if a little sacrifice on my part means that they can attend and enjoy a game, then I'm all for it.

Making the entire season peanut-free, though? Now that might be a little too much.

UPDATE: Just received an email from Justin Firesheets, the media relations director for the Birmingham Barons, a team that also went peanut-free for a game in '08: "It was the first time we had undertaken such an endeavor, and we had a tremendous amount of positive response in the community. It is likely something we will repeat in the future."

2. Hot trade rumor of the day: White Sox send Juan Uribe to the Red Sox, freeing up salary room to deal for Brian Roberts and paving the way to send Orlando Cabrera to the Dodgers. Death, taxes and Kenny Williams making a trade the last week of July. [CBS Sportline]

3. A fan who was in attendance at the last game of Yankee Stadium I in 1973: "By the sixth inning of that last game, all you heard was hammers ... People had come not only to see the last game but to take pieces of the Stadium, and they were tearing it apart. Back then, they didn’t have that much security.” [Dugout Central]

This is a joke right? My son's 10 and allergic to peanuts, he knows not to eat them and always will ask a question. Peanut free zone, just plain stupid.

Seriously, there are so many people with so many different deadly allergic reactions. I understand it's serious, but we cannot cater to every person's problem. Eventually people just need to learn how to adapt themselves to their problems and not expect everyone else to go without or change their ways for them.

If people are stupid enough to eat something they know they're allergic to then let them suffer the consequences. Why should the rest of us be deprived.

This is a joke. Do people in the country ever take responsibility for their own actions anymore. If I have a problem with peanuts, I wouldn't need the stadium to hald my hand to make sure I didn't eat peanuts. I think it is sad that the Mariners feel they have to babysit everyone to make sure they don't get sued.

the Mariners are the peanuts that should be banned, considering the way they play, but they have their new stadium, and another group of Seattle idiots can say they ripped off the taxpayers, because they hate us, and they are supposed to be cute for banning peanuts, it is just another left wing attempt at controlling peoples lives. I have an allergy to asparagus of all things, but I don't expect Albertsons to take it out of the sale aisle.......Seattle is getting stupid.....

That's one of the stupided thing I've heard. I have allergies too, can't eat anything that flies or swims. You live with it, don't expect everyone else to suffer. I guess they should ban anything anyone is allergic to too and make it a food free stadium...MORONS

You guys who say "why not ban all food at games" are misinformed. Most food allergies are caused by eating the food. There is a large base of people allergic to peanuts that can actually die from an allergic reaction to peanuts without even touching the peanut. So having a couple of sections for one or two out of 80+ games is not unreasonable. That is 0.0028% of the available seating assuming the 350 sections and 82 games.

I agree with everyone. Why should I, who would love to eat peanuts (they do not agree with me) want a whole ball park to cater to me. No one else does. Gee I hate the smell of a strong cologne do you think they will ban stinky perfume and cologne just for me?

In the future, how about a no soda zone (so anybody dieting will not be offended), then a no cheer zone, a no logo zone, a no eyeglasses zone. At least a lot a parks still have a no fan zone (just look at the massive swatches of empty seats in many parks).

This is just dumb. I mean kids HAVE to be with parents at the game and whenever my son goes to a game with me i always make sure he doesn't have peanuts. He is young but i expect by the age of 10 he will be fine even by himself
