Count me among those disappointed with the story that Tony La Russa's idea of bringing Barry Bonds to St. Louis was shot down as quickly as his future thought of having Albert Pujols start a few games on the mound will eventually be.
After all, it would have been highly entertaining to watch the self-proclaimed "best fans in baseball" try to rationalize a way of pulling for Bonds in a St. Louis uniform.
But thanks to Cardinals management, La Russa's idea died almost the instant it left his mouth, meaning St. Louis fans can go back to thinking of ways to defend Rick Ankiel.
From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:
"When you look at somebody dangerous to hit behind Albert, Barry was the guy I thought of," La Russa acknowledged before Sunday's workout. "For whatever reason, at the general manager or the ownership level, they didn't agree."
"It became moot as soon as I raised it and they said no."
In all fairness, I'm probably not giving Cardinals fans enough credit, considering a large portion would like to pretend the Mark McGwire Era never happened. As such, their management rightfully realized that signing Bonds would put the fanbase in an unfair position and declined La Russa's idea, no matter how much protection it would have given King Albert in the lineup. At this point, why even deal with the PR headache?

the pirates are going to be in last. they'll trade jason bay at some point in the middle of the season when they drop into last place, and they won't get out of last.
the excellent young reds and brewers teams will compete for the top spot, and the cubs will be bouncing between competing with the reds and brewers and with the astros and cards. You can't be too confident in your team when you've got Dumpster as a starter, Wood as a closer, and your ace beat up his catcher last year and walked over 100 guys each of the last two years
