Big League Stew - MLB

I've never heard of anyone becoming drunk by osmosis, but if such a thing were possible, the Rays clubhouse is the place you'd want to start. I just floated to the surface from the soaked-with-suds visitor's clubhouse at U.S Cellular Field and if anything is going to stop the Rays, it might be this propensity to party at every point in the postseason. Having also been privy in the Phillies clubhouse celebration in Milwaukee on Sunday, the only thing I can say is that Tampa Bay's rugrats made Philly's bash look like an absolute tea party. A Chicago media vet said the White Sox didn't even go this crazy when they won the World Series in 2005. You could see the alcohol droplets in the air.

Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks, of course,  but to put some sort of perspective on thie contrast, each winning team (Philadelphia and Tampa Bay) was greeted with two gigantic tubs of MLB's sponsor beer after their victories. The Philadelphia players collectively took a few cans to spray around the room before quickly getting tired and turning their attention toward the Dodgers.

However, by the end of the Rays' celebration of beating the White Sox, you could see the bottom of both tubs while most of the contents had been sprayed into the  air (and then the carpet) or over the Mohawk of reserve player Jonny Gomes (mostly by himself.)

Speaking of Gomes, the supporter was nowhere to be found, but he did serve again as master of ceremonies, procuring a bottle of tequila to pour for his teammates before slugging from the bottle himself. (Pictured above, thanks AP.)

Since I've often seen fans comment on the champagne poured after winning an LDS series, I asked Rays' wonderboy Evan Longoria his view on the whole issue. How, I asked him, did they justify going wild when there's still a seven-game LCS separating them and a World Series appearance?

Said Evan Almighty:

"As a fan, you don't realize how tough it is to get to this spot. Only eight teams make it and only four teams make it to the next round. That's out of 30. We're going to celebrate every victory and every chance we get, because you know what? It's 166 games later and we're still in it."

Fair enough. SO considering this is the third time the Rays have broken out the champagne (they celebrated upon clinching a playoff spot and then the AL East), has Longoria gotten to the point where he can tell the difference between bubbly and Budweiser getting poured on him?

"Not at all. All I know is that it all smells horrible."

He's right about that. Imagine the worst-smelling fraternity party you've ever been to, multiply it by 100 and then let it ferment for a few months. It's absolutely awful, but oh-so-fun to watch if you can get past the smell. Follow the jump for a picture of Mr. Gomes wearing the goggles Oakley sent him, as well as a picture of manager Joe Maddon getting the business.

Let the Rays live it up. i have been waiting for this day since the first pitch of the first game the "Devil" Rays played. Now, many years later we finally have so much to cheer about. It was the same for the Lightning winning the Stanley Cup and the Bics winning the Superbowl...years of heartache gone...Congrads to the Rays...I can't wait to see what they will do now..

They didn't really get a proper celebration for winning the AL East - they clinched when the Red Sox lost a game at like 1:15 in the morning, after the team had scattered. So they were making up for that.

I thought Paul Konerko was on the White Sox... how is he spraying Maddon with bubbly?
Great season so far, 8 more wins to go. I hope they face Boston so they can shut up Coco Crispies and Jon Pappy once and for all.

All I can say is 'Wow'. They deserve all three of those celebrations - just like Boston deserves theirs. It's going to be an excellent ALCS with the two best teams in baseball going at it. Like anglomer said above "wohever wins is going to win the world series". It's that simple.
I'm just thankful that the Rays have homefield advantage because both teams are extremely stron when they're surrounded by their own fans

You know, if the Rays somehow win the World Series, does that mean people will finally stop picking on Tampa Bay as the city (okay, area - since it's actually three cities) that produces nothing but "losers"? I mean they've already got a Stanley Cup champ, a Sumperbowl champ, and I guess an Arena Bowl champ (that counts, doesn't it?), so if they add this final feather to their cap will people leave them alone?
...of course, it might also be one of those signs of the apocalypse I've been hearing about...

Tampa Bay has such a great minor league production. With Durham producing great players its a shame they had to pass on Hamilton a few year back. can you imagine them with the potential MVP? Dominant

Let them enjoy it while they can. For the Rays it is the first time celebrating anything. Party hardy,

#2. They lost that night too, so alot of teams don't have that jovial celebration when that happens. But they deserve it. NO QUESTION!!

This will be a great LCS and I think this proves that the AL East is the best division in all of baseball. Teams like the Jays and Yanks would easily be in the playoffs over three of the four in the NL and maybe over anyone in the AL central. The Rays are the better team so far but that can change in a playoff series. I'm a Sox fan but if the Rays pull it off it would be tough to say that it wouldn't be great for baseball. And the AL will win the World Series. No doubt about it.

Good job rays...now old school plays new school. I'm a Sox fan born into it ,but i'm not a TB hater so it should be a good series.
Hell, any October is great when you don't have to see the tired old Spankees, or some raggy cali team in the playoffs....well i got part of my wish anyway......one LA team down one to go.

Rays shouldn't even be CELEBRATING right now. Sure they made the playoffs and sure, they won the ALDS..but let's wait until they winb it all for the champagne. Four more losses and they will be celebrating for nothing. It's time to focus, not celebrate.

I'll agree. St Petersburg is a great city...I'm hoisting a cold one right now while looking out at the Gulf of Mexico.. hurricane season is almost over, but if the Rays take it all, this city will look like a storm hit it !!! Super Bowl, Stanley Cup and now World Series..who woulda thunk it ..Rays in 6
