Big League Stew - MLB

So here's what I'm wondering as both New York teams prepare to enter new stadiums in 2009: At any point will any one feel a bit of sadness that Shea Stadium will be no longer?

Will anyone write even one fawning and longing tribute like the thousands Yankee Stadium will undoubtedly receive?

Obviously Mets fans are excited to be moving into the new and updated facilities that Citi Field will provide. Shea's always been more of a punchline than something to be waxed poetically over. That's understood.

But there have to be a few people who were sad that today was the last ever home opener at Shea? Doesn't there?

Anyway, if you're out there, let's hear from you.

In the books ...

Phillies 5, Mets 2Chase Utley gets hit with three pitches, one short of a league record.

Orioles 8, Rangers 1 — Six in a row for Baltimore.

Red Sox 5, Tigers 0 — Not-so-bold prediction: Detroit will see 0-10.

In progress ...

Royals 3, Yankees 2 (5th)

shea will definitely be missed, so i'll make sure i miss demolition day. despite the sentimental history, 22 yrs since our last championship does warrant some changes so i'm all for it. name should stick tho. 1ST.

Shea holds fond memories to all who grew up and matured with her. From that inaugural season, that coincided with the opening of the 1964-65 NY Worlds Fair, walking up seemingly unending escalators, to the mezzanine and upper levels, walking from concourses and seeing the gigantic state of the art scoreboard with its slide show depicting player's faces(used only ay night games when the picture would show up)and the green of the grass and the distinctive infield dirt that was entirely Shea's own mixture, it brought a new feeling to an old baseball town. No matter how inept the players, how many losses had gone down, we Mets fans always had hope. A new stadium, a new team, a new tradition being established. NL baseball back in NYC. No Mickey Mantles, Roger Marises, Elston Howards, Mel Stottlelmyres were on our team. Just a bunch of good guys being overmatched by the likes of Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, Bob Gibson,Juan Marichal, Jim Bunning, Jim Maloney. But, we had Mr Met on our side. We had a chant of Let's Go Mets to spark the hope of late inning rallies. Nothing like the way it is played out today. It was methodic and repetitive and with the right crowd, would play on until the ending desired. The tying or go ahead run would touch the plate and Mets fans would be in delight for what the team and the crowd had achieved together. We never gave up or gave in to losing games and losing seasons. Always hope. Always waiting for the miracle that was Tom Seaver. And then Gil Hodges, the Marine, as our manager. And the Miracle of 1969. Yes, to those who witnessed the birth and maturity of Shea Stadium it will be in our hearts forever.

in the words of a friend of mine who is a met fan "it may be a dump, but it's our dump"
Micheal B, i take it you've never met a real Yankee fan and you think that saying the "skankees" is new, original and witty? get a life

i've been a met fan for the last 5 years after being brought up a Yankee fan. I've been to Shea twice and Yankee Stadium a countless amount of times and i have to say my better memories of baseball games are at Shea Stadium.
