Big League Stew - MLB

When appropriate, we review key decisions to see if the right one was made. This is the Second-Guess.

The Turning Point: In 1996, Fox bought broadcast rights to Major League Baseball games, including the World Series, and tapped Joe Buck and Tim McCarver to announce. Ever since, when Buck is not covering the NFL, he and McCarver have led Fox's coverage, including the current World Series.

The Question: An inordinate amount of viewers, seemingly, strongly dislike Buck and McCarver. How often have you heard praise, as opposed to scorn, for both or either? So should Fox ditch them for another duo as soon as now so those pained folks can fully enjoy the rest of the Phillies-Rays series?

Off with their talking heads!: If you want to polarize an audience, talk John McCain and Barack Obama. If you want to put an audience on the same page, talk Buck and McCarver and how awful everyone thinks they are.

Fox annually ejects Buck from Saturday baseball during the pennant race so he can work Sunday football. Personally, Buck told ESPN Radio in July that he preferred reality TV to live sports, and whined about the amount and length of baseball games. For this, Buck was hammered mercilessly by consumers, who also feel his attitude permeates baseball broadcasts, and that his voice drones on, adding to the impression that he would rather be elsewhere. This, despite growing up in a "baseball family"; his father was legendary St. Louis Cardinals announcer Jack Buck.

McCarver gets hammered by fans no matter what comes out of his mouth, which often is folksy sounding, oversimplified redundancy. In the Phillies-Rays series, McCarver has noted that sliders and sinkers are "two different pitches." Before that, he inserted himself into the Manny Ramirez story arc, pointing out to anyone listening that Manny's poorer actions in Boston were "despicable."

Even McCarver's hyperbole is hyperbolic, as in 2004 when he said after a David Ortiz home run that "Mt. Everest erupts again!" Great analogy, except that Everest isn't a volcano.

The people have spoken, and spoken, and spoken. They're calling to the broadcaster bullpen.

Stay the course: In Game 2, Buck and McCarver did a great job in tandem pointing out the rough series umpire Kerwin Danley was having. Danley's indecisive-looking and vague pointing gesture with Rocco Baldelli batting in the second inning helped the Rays score a run, and the announcers were all over it.

Buck's confidence and intelligence — despite his ridiculous comments to ESPN which he later couched — are mistaken for arrogance and smugness. People get it in their heads that he's a jerk and won't let go, no matter what he says.

Like John Madden, McCarver can sound like he talks down to the audience, but it's because most of the audience doesn't consist of hard-core baseball fanatics who comment on blogs and call sports talk radio. Most watching probably do know that sinkers and sliders are different. McCarver should explain "how" instead of simply pointing out the obvious.

TV ratings for Game 1 of Phillies-Rays were lower by 14 percent than the 2007 Series opener, but it still beat the competition. In addition, Ed Goren, the president of Fox Sports, obviously loves Buck and McCarver and wouldn't keep them on if he didn't.

You don't jettison a vice-presidential candidate, no matter how harmful, this close to an election, and you don't dump announcers in the middle of the World Series. Besides, the people who seem to hate Buck and McCarver also seem to enjoy hating them. As long as they watch.

Hindsight is 20/20: If Goren had known that the World Series would have such a small-market feel (code, for no N.Y., Boston, Chicago or L.A. teams), perhaps he could have hijacked a play-by-play guy such as ESPN's Dan Schulman. He's always prepared for a broadcast, to the point that he sounds like an ex-player who interned at SABR, and he's got a nice voice and friendly demeanor. His radio work with Orel Hershiser was outstanding earlier in the playoffs. They would make a nice No. 1 TV team. If not Schulman and Hershiser, there are only a million other duos calling a million other games, as Buck has pointed out.

Their say:

"As far as sitting down and watching a sporting event, that's just not part of my day, it's not part of my night. I'll be honest with you: watching "The Bachelorette" is." — Buck, on Colin Cowherd's ESPN Radio show in July

"So, by guessing right, you might have guessed wrong." — McCarver

"What's the difference between Tim McCarver and appendicitis? Appendicitis is covered by most health plans." media critic Norman Chad

Big League Stew's Verdict — People, thy will be done: Buck has indicated he'd be perfectly happy calling a football game. Baseball fans seem to agree. What's the problem? Let's make this happen, Fox. When he gets bored with that, maybe Buck could replace Conan O'Brien late nights at NBC. That's probably what Buck really wants, anyway. He's talented and engaged enough with entertainment and pop culture ("Bachelorette") to do a great job with it.

As for McCarver, he's just impossible to defend from himself, so to try any harder ...

Is there an old broadcaster's home where we can place him before another whippersnapper comes and dumps water on him again? (Who would have thought a nadir could last 15 years?)

Say, did you know that a slider and a sinker are two different pitches?

At the very least Buck and McCarver give you a non-biased call of the game, unlike the crew that seemed to root
for the Red Sux on every play during the Rays-Sux series. The problem as I see it is very obvious. The cyybabys
come from Boston, New York or LA, who have no team involved in the series. Give 'em a little cheese with their
    whine. WA-WA!

There isn't anything wrong with either of theses guys. People are going to end up hating the announcers, whoever they are. It's inherent to the job. The baseball knowlege that McCarveer and Buck bring to the game is priceless. So what if the words don't always come out right.

I have no problems with Buck, nor do I have many problems with announcers that call the game to let the viewers at home know what they are seeing.
It's McCarver I cannot stand, but it's more to his past biases than anything. I couldn't stand him in the Boston-New York series of 2003 and 2004, and I can't stand him now.
I'm just waiting for the next idiotic word so that I can set his baseball card ablaze.

i try to not get too mad at the stupid comments that these two make, but its pretty hard. they seem to pick one team and then only say negative/positive things about the team. they are not objective at all- i have watched nationals/phils games on MSN and had the nationals announcers say positive things about the phillies, even tho they obviously wanted to see their nats win. i just feel that when i listen to these too its like the negative nancy parade.
i just feel that there are better announcers that could be calling the world series rather than these two.

I have not considered Joe Buck relevant ever since he cried his eyes out over Randy Moss' "mooning" touchdown. He is incredibly monotonous regardless of the sport he tries to call.

    Best comment EVER:
McCarver (After Feliz in SF struck out every Brave he faced in whatever year it was): "I'd say converting Feliz from catcher to pitcher was a good idea."
Buck: "I like chocolate ice cream" ...I figured since we were stating obvious facts."
I'm a Cardinal fan and I've even grown tired of Buck...JOE that is. However, McCarver needs to join the ESPN broadcast to make 3 old men not knowing what they're talking about.

I don't think either of them is much more knowledgeable than the competition. Yeah mos announcers are kind of annoying, but the only one worse than these 2 in my opinion is Joe Morgan. The worst part about TBS going to national games instead of just the Braves is that Don Sutton left. I miss hearing him and Van Weiren do games together. Ernie Johnson and Joe Simpson too. It was a much more conversational feel, instead of some of these guys that think they're politicians or preachers.

I have listened to both these goons and if they don't like the Trop, Tampa Bay Rays, BUCS or the Lightening stay away we don't need you here in the Tampa Bay area. Most of us are fans of the sports and are proud of our teams. Remember, the Rays and BUCS had lousy ownerships when they started - but look at us now. All the commentators that don't like our area - stay away and announe only the games and places you would like to be.
GIVE US A RESPECT - WE HAVE EARNED IT.

To say that Buck and McCarver are unbaised is a load of @#*t. In the St. Louis/Boston World Series each of them seemed to be PULLING for Boston even though each has a close or should be close tie to St. Louis. McCarver has been anti St. Louis for year, especially when he broadcast for New York (who he never even played for). I thing both of them need to be taken down a notch and remember that they are not bigger than the job they are doing.
Pour a bucket on each of them and call in Chris Berman (yes I know, wrong network).

Buck is the product of sports broadcasting nepotism. ie: Kenny Albert and the horrendous Jeremy Shapp. Thousands of better broadcasters out there. But their daddies weren't great broadcasters. Joe should be retired to watch his reality TV and let people who appreciate sports broadcasting, not take it as their royal right, do the World Series and the NFL

I actually have found them better this year than in the past. But, then again, I really don't pay much attention to what they're talking about. I simply concentrate on the players playing the game itself.

I HATE HATE HATE these two, especially Buck. He should have been pulled from the playoffs after those comments complaining about baseball. McCarver is such a Yankees homer (for whatever reason) and I'm suprised he hasn't brought them up in the series yet.
Please get rid of these two. I dont think Buck knows anything about baseball.

Excellent post! Great points on both of these clowns. These guys may be the most boring tandem in recent years. Joe is completely monotone, and I am glad you pointed out that he doesn't even enjoy sports any more (as if you couldn't tell by his lack of enthuesiasm).
They survived this long because they rode on the coat-tails of large market teams being involved in the World Series for a large chunk of their broadcasting careers. Now the poor ratings are going to be blamed on the smaller market teams (though I personally don't think Philly belongs in this category), as opposed to the lousy broadcasting.
They are severly boring and add nothing to the game.
p.s. Joe sucks covering football as well....

so many sports fans could bring more enthusiasm to the microphone than this clown. plus he has a man crush on the AL. bias yes. turn off the volume yes. phillies yes.

They both really play up the New York teams. The last time I looked there were no New York teams in the playoffs so why even bring them up. They both really adore Yankee Stadium. Am I the only person in the world that thinks Yankee Stadium is "just another ball park"? If it was so great why did they tear it down?

Of course these guys suck, but it can get worse as BearBacker correctly points out. Someone should go back in time and destroy whatever genetic material resulted in Musberger. It would be glorious if there was less dead time during games because it would cut down on the stupid blather from announcers. All you advertisers out there, I may be watching but I am not listening. Because these announcers suck so much, and the games are so long, I never listen to them and provide my own soundtrack.

I don't mind Buck, but he is pretty vanilla...McCarver, well, if you can't say anything nice....
I wouldn't mind them trying one or both of the Brennamans...they both announce with energy...maybe pair them with someone who has some baseball perspective...Tim Kurkjian from ESPN...or Gammons...

I really haven't detected what the problem is with these two. I think they're very informative and un-biased. So McCarver is a little "folksy". Who cares? That's who he is. He'a a former catcher and brings a lot to the booth.
