Big League Stew - MLB

Like a puppy trailing us home from the corner market, we figure these Rays are eventually going to trail off,  back away, lose interest or get flattened by a car.

But none of those things have happened yet, so it's quickly dawning on me that our first mistake is not recognizing the advantage of their being the young dog on the block. With it comes gobs of energy, resiliency and the just the right amount of stupidity to not know what they're getting into. If Tampa Bay understands that there's pressure involved in this thing they call postseason baseball, we certainly haven't seen it yet.

With a 6-2 victory over the White Sox on Friday night, the Rays are now just one victory away from reaching the ALCS and if the Red Sox or Angels think a simple "scram" is going to be enough to shoo them, then they'll be facing a fate similar to the White Sox. The Rays' win in Game 2 was typical Tampa Bay — they kept it close despite some early struggles from starter Scott Kazmir, took the lead on a homer by hero-of-the-day Akinori Iwamura and then created separation room late in the game with three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The series now heads to Chicago for Sunday's Game 3 and it's probably safe to say the White Sox no longer see the Rays as the easily leashed pup. Right now, they're the AL's undisputed top dog.

Other bits from Friday's first game ...

The Orlando Cabrera-Grant Balfour dispute spilled over to the second pitch of the game, when Kazmir hit Cabrera in the leg with a pitch. The leadoff runner turned into a bases loaded situation, but although the White Sox scored two runs,  it was the only damage Chicago's middling offense would inflict on Kazmir. Though the Rays' lefty labored through 5 1//3 innings with 98 pitches, the White Sox continually failed to capitalize, stranding nine runners in scoring position.

Winning Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger threw out the first pitch before the game and if the Rays thought they had a challenge in finding "names" to perform the honor, just wait until the ALCS.

why is everyone so fast to say that Kaz hit him on purpose? TBS showed the stat before the game that showed Kaz has struggled with control over his last umpteen starts. Joe Maddon and Kaz are too smart to put themselves in a hole by hitting the leadoff hitter. I guess it just makes it seem so much more exciting!!!!. Kaz simply over threw the pitch with some inside motion. Jeez I would think that somebody in the media wouldn/t give in to the lowest common denominator and actually show a little bit of that skill called "REPORTING" but I guess even the Duk can't withstand a chance to overhype

The rays are good but they will not make it to the world series. The red sox have more playoff time and have much better hitting

No way Kaz hit Cabrera on purpose...not in the article is the fact that Balfour faced Cabrera in Game 2 in the sixth and got him out again. It's in the AP article at least, but if you are going to yap about Kaz hitting OC, then talk about this AB.
Nice job Torii Hunter, way to get hurt arguing calls.

If the Red Sox are so good then why were they 8-10 against the Rays this year? It seems that the more people keep underestimating the Rays the more the Rays win and prove everybody wrong. And no matter what they do people still keep underestimating them. That's ok though. Keep underestimating them and they will win the World Series. They're an awesome team and they're a lot better than people are willing to give them credit for. Just because a team is a power house and has been to the postseason more doesn't make them the better team.

You guys whom are dogging the Sox, and Cubs, are obviously fans of teams that did not even make it to the ALDS.P.S. Ump how big is your strike zone anyway????? He needs a definite eye exam!!!!!!!!!!!

Hmmm. I believe that the people who are dogging the Sox and Cubs might be fans of either the Rays or the Dodgers. Oh wait, and didn't one of those teams make it to the ALDS? Wasn't it the Rays? I think so. And you're right, the Dodgers didn't make it to the ALDS. Especially since they're in the National League and they're in the NLDS about to kick the Cubs out of the playoffs. The Rays are about to do the same thing to the White Sox. Go Rays!

I wouldn't be so quick to count the sox out in this one. They are known for winning when their back is against the wall, as seen by their AL central title. I believe they will make the ALDS an interesting series. The one thing that could do them in is Vazquez pitching game 5. He has been terrible in has last ten billion starts, and that could be what wins it for the rays.

The White Sox should have won the game, with their best starter on the mound against the Rays' worst starter. And it still didn't happen. Now the Rays have their two best guys (Garza and Sonnanstine) in Games 3 and 4 and they only have to win one. I don't think the series gets back to St. Petersburg.

Kaz hitting Cabrera looked intentional to me. It's not a big deal, just part of the game.
Don't come on here blaming your loss on the strike zone. That's weak. You all had plenty of baserunners, problem is you can't score without hitting a homerun.

Even the Rays got the lowest record before, the Rays is a respectable team. They know how to beat the Red Sox and the Yankees. That's before. But now, they are beating the other teams because of pitching, defense, and speed.

I think it's time to see a different team be on top in the American League. I'm tired of seeing the Yankees or the Red Sox always getting into the playoffs and dominating. Obviously lately it hasn't been the Yankees dominating anything. I'm ready to see someone new and I think if anyone is going to do it it's going to be the Rays.

How much did the Rays pay C.B. Bucknor for that strike zone last night anyway? When your pitcher is getting those kinds of calls on some pretty marginal pitches, you know things are rolling your way. Ride it as long as you can, all you have to do is win 11.

Whatever a "team" is supposd to be, the Rays are it.
I wish I coulda' bet on them pre-season to win the World Series...odds were probably 500-to-one...or more!
    Let the Rays dynasty roll!
