Bees! Bees! Bees everywhere!

In a year where we've seen a cat interrupt a Cubs game and some gulls play a decisive role in an Indians win, a Major League Baseball game interrupted by a swarm of bees only makes sense.

And that's what happened Thursday afternoon as thousands of bees — no, not these Killer Bees or even the Killer B's that used to play in Houston descended upon San Diego's Petco Park in the ninth inning of the Astros' 7-2 victory over the Padres.

Seriously, who ordered a made-for-TV movie in downtown San Diego today?

From the Associated Press:

A beekeeper was called to the downtown ballpark and sprayed a chair and a ballgirl's jacket that had attracted the bees. Padres president Tom Garfinkel said a few thousand bees attached themselves to a queen bee.

"The umpires made the right call to stop the game," Garfinkel said. "There's a couple thousand bees there. If they decide to swarm on a person, whether that's a player, an employer or obviously a fan, we could have a real situation."

The beekeeper arrived at 3:56 p.m., quickly did his job to applause from the fans who remained, and the game resumed 5 minutes later.

Honestly, what's next? Packs of wild dogs wandering the nation's ballparks? Stampeding elephants? Tigers leaping from the stands to maul sliding runners?

Ah well, all's well that ends well and let it be said that the bees proved to be less a nuisance than either Manny Ramirez(notes) or the horde of media that will arrive in San Diego on Friday night to document his return to baseball after a 50-game suspension. (Sting! Zing!)

According to an anonymous source, a San Diego Padre was overheard to have said when the bees attacked, "It's all about the Bee, not the U. If they're going after my legs, I'm going to go after theirs first. I'm a soldier!" And now you know the rest of the story.....good day! Discuss!

This must be an omen of the Killer Bee's from Astros past. Does this mean the Astros embark on a huge winning streak that catapults them to the top of the NL Central? We shall see.......

They should team up with the bugs from Cleveland and form a super-insect team that will bother MLB teams across the country.

I'm still waiting for the promotional stunt where the Ghostbusters are called in to a stadium.
Gimmick. Of The. Century. Where would it happen? Wrigley, naturally. Fans there likely believe the place is haunted by cursed ghouls.

This story would be far more interesting if the bees started a bench clearing brawl/skirmish, with Padres' and Astros' players swinging their bats at the bees, Benny Hill-ing each other in the face with bats and helmets. And in the end, Craig Biggio and Jeff Bagwell ghostly blue Jedi forms assimilate Lance Berkman into the non-World Series winners' force.

THE SAN DIEGO PADRES WILL BEAT THOSE DARN DODGERS THIS COMING SERIES. GET THE BROOMS OUT AND SWEEP THOSE DODGERS BACK TO LA. THATS RIGHT KICK THOSE DODGERS BACK TO LA LA LAND. i will try to go to the game this sat and see the padres beat the dodger haters 8 to 3. bring on the raider nation. well all the raider nation are in prison serving a long time. they have plenty of time to do nothing. the only time the raider nation comes out is when the raiders are playing a football game. 2009 will be a year the san diego chargers will run all over the raiders and go on to the super bowl. the padres going all the way to the world series and taking down what ever team they face

They said the bees were attached to a queen, so maybe the queen got stuck in the girl's jacket or something, and the thousands of bees followed. I don't know how else the bees could have been attracted by the jacket.

Jim Brunzell - first thing I thought of!!! And that TV movie, was that the one where the car had to be driven into the Superdome - and they dropped the temperature to 45 degrees??? And wild dogs!!! One of those got in a USC football game in 1998, ran across the field and halfway up the peristyle.
