Big League Stew - MLB

As teams fall by the wayside and can no longer bank on the longest of mathematical odds to win their division, the Stew will be there to document their expiration with The Nail in the Coffin. Twelfth in the ground  are the St. Louis Cardinals, who couldn't overcome the InBev takeover to endure the Old Style attack of the Cubs and the Miller Time moments of the Brewers.

So it is with deep sorrow that we note the passing of the St. Louis Cardinals, who leave their survivors in the very painful situation of having to rely on the St. Louis Rams for entertainment and company. In lieu of flowers, please send all donations to the Fund to Help Those Affected by The Sudden Death of the Ryan Ludwick-for-MVP talk. As always, luncheon at Steve's Lounge follows the service.

The 2008 St. Louis Cardinals

Time of death: Sept. 16 after 7-2 loss to Reds

Causes: Going 1-7 over two key four-game series with Milwaukee; Talking selves into believing that Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright were trade deadline "acquisitions"; Death of Jason Isringhausen's closing career; Scientists not able to clone Albert Pujols quick enough

PECOTA projection: 72 Current pace: 84

Moments in the Sun: Cardinals bullpen acquires handy cruising cooler, Rick Ankiel unleashes cannon twice in one game, Team proves Jeff Passan's first-week death notice wrong with 53-43 first half start

Moments of Despair: Albert Pujols' strength finally hurts someone else, Yadier Molina steamrolled by opposing pitcher; Team shuffles around to 27-31 second half (as of today)

Others remember: "Dear Cardinals ... Enclosed please find an invoice for my summer. Your recent six game losing streak (seven as I type this) that rather adeptly summarizes the later half of a once promising season has disenfranchised even the most loyal of us, the very fans corrupted in their most vulnerable years by exposure to your organization in the late 80s and early 90s. You have ruined my last summer (for awhile) and I demand some sort of remedy for that. High priced, lousy veteran free agents valued for their 'experience and leadership' will not suffice. The hours lost. The long evenings ended in despair by blown saves, the bottom of that lineup in bottom of the ninth. Platitudes and power struggles. No amount of sangria could repair the season.

"The whole thing sucks. Greedy owners. Fascist manager. Bureaucrat general manager. Lazy players. May your portfolios be filled with risky mortgages and banking stocks.

"Your indecency has even made children cry." — RVB, Cardinals Diaspora, 09.17.08

Death watch (w/division elimination #s): Houston (E), Colorado (E), San Francisco (E), Toronto (E), New York (E), Cleveland (1)

Even more troublesome is seeing that Ryan Howard will probably reach 200 strikeouts this season and win the MVP just for home runs, despite a .250 average and lousy fielding.

aw, com-on guy's! the cards did much better than we thought they would in the beguining. true, i thought that as they showed they were a serious team that ownership would try to shore- up the bull-pin not let them set a record breaking loss program but i really enjoyed this season. lot's of fun and exciting games. i saw them all good luck next year a true st. louis fan.(not a fair weather fan)...

i say it is time to stick a fork into Mulder and Carpenter their done! quit bragging on Lupper a 5oo pitcher if the wind blow's wrong carp. is hurt, mulder was done when we got him let's move on!give-up on these re-treads and go looking for some REAL talent we got sticks, let's get pitching. if you draw 3+million with no pitching star's and no bull-pin stopper ,just think what we could do with a little help! come-on !spend some of those BUCKS! go card's 09

Well, the Cards improved their record from last year but not by much. The pitching staff has got to be improved as well as the bullpen. I like what I saw from Ankiel, Glaus, and Ludwick but the middle infield must be improved also. Pujols is a beast to say the least.....
I say sign Lohse and look for another starter. Drop Mulder and perhaps look at Carpenter as a bullpen addition if he can't bounce back from yet another injury. The Haren trade still looms large as a giant boner.
Go Cards! Keep the faith Cardinal Nation!

John Mozeliak and Billy Dimwit lll, Should not be part of this "Brain trust" Dimwit was in charge of Ballpark Village and all we have to show for this is a Hole in the Ground and not his daddy made him President talk about the "peter princile" Mozeliak was going to trade for some relief and we got 4th place... Words just Words.. NO Action...

Duk's article is the most accurate, concise on the Cards last two years as any written. With the faithfulness of the St. Louis fans it looks like the front office would do something to shore up this team. The first thing they got to do is get rid of LaRussa. That man over manages every game in T-ball fashion and comes up with some of the worst line ups. Lopez hitting 4th, come on!! I bet LaRussa lead the league with 161 different line-ups this year.
Front office,,,spend some of the money the Cardinal faithful keep spending at your ballpark. Get some pitching and get a manager who will solidify the line-up.

agreed on the greedy owners. they made millions on the world series of '06 but have failed to keep the faith with fans. it's getting harder and harder to keep going to the ballpark and pay the outrageous prices....and good for jim edmonds. he deserved better treatment. glad the cubs appreciate his talents.

being a long-loyal Cardinal fan,the majority of the comments is very true,it has been tough to take.......The number of lineup changes in the batting order, has finally made me question LaRussa.....they keep running a young reliever (McCllelan) out there and the obvious is the kid is tired......the dollar amount the front-office has horded over the years is sad,Albert should demand a tremendous amount before his contract runs out/and demand a couple more true established hitters to help him out.....I am very pleased with Albert,Ankiel,Ludwick,MolinaShumaker and Wellemeyer I have always said that Dunc may be excellent motivator but I have always wondered what his plan is in the off days for the pitchers, seems to be too many injuries maybe a true conditioining program needs to be re-invented pitching overall is limited as usual from the free agent market/BUT THE TIME IS NOW TO REBUILD

The Cards maintained respectability when a disaster was looming on the horizon. They stayed above water all year long and had many offensive surprises amidst crucial injuries. I was wondering when they would go into the tank and dip below .500 but it never happened. Albert Pujois played exceptionally well in spite of nagging injury and the pitching was well enough to compensate for those on the d/l for extended periods. All in all it wasn't their best year but it looked like potential disaster before April.

Houston put the nails in the coffin and Arizonas finished the job. The only good thing that happened in the last three weeks was knocking Zambrano out of the box in the second inning. Except for September the Cardinals played well concidering their pitching. They gave us hope; however, the miracles of 2006 never came about. Next year will be the same if they do not find some relief pitchers. See you in Florida Tony.

As long as Cardinal Fans keep packing the ball park....management has no reason to spend $ on the big free agents..It is a business...and the new Gm will manage it like"money ball"-- He was known to be that way when they hired him...He has backstabbed his way to the top and to expect him to do something to actually improve the club by SPENDING $$$$....come on.... The Cardinals lost the GM who would go out and make something happen... Who can expect teh Cardinals to compete with that pitching staff? The young kids in the bull pen have the fastballs...can someone teach them the breaking pitch? I agree with the $ tied up in Mulder and CArpenter...they will be taking another big risk in waiting for them to develop...or heal.... take the $$ from Mulder and put your $ on Carpenter bouncing back... As far as Tony is concerned---- you aren't going to get much better out there in a manager...Personality yes, managing the game--NO WAY... he is one of the best in the game....
