Big League Stew - MLB

As teams fall by the wayside and head home from the playoffs with dashed World Series dreams and disappointed fans, the Stew will be there to document their expiration with The Nail in the Coffin.

Second in the playoff ground are the Milwaukee Brewers, who had the Beer City's most memorable season since Harvey's '82 Wallbangin' Squad, yet were still unable to turn that Wild Card success into an extended run. Even dreams have expiration dates.

So it is with deep sorrow that we note the passing of the Brew Crew, who survived their manager by more than two weeks. In lieu of flowers, please send all donations to the CC Sabathia Retention Fund and, as always, luncheon at Steve's Lounge follows the service.

The 2008 Milwaukee Brewers

Time of death: Oct. 5 after 6-2 loss to Philadelphia. Lost NLDS, three games to one.

Causes: Ben Sheets being unable to pitch one playoff game; Shane Victorino's power too much for CC Sabathia; Too many Wisconsinites still focused on Packers; Phillies not allowed pregame opportunity to injure selves on Bernie Brewer's slide

PECOTA projection: 87 victories Regular season total: 90

Moments in the Sun: Team accepts first postseason bid in 26 years; Ned Yost finally fired; CC Sabathia gives HoF Answer Man interview; Club still boasts best tailgating scene anywhere; Milwaukee TV station gets in slam at Cubs fans; Ryan Braun wins hearts, one autograph at a time; Bob Uecker talks at length about Mr. Belvedere days; Uecker proves to be a Golden God

Moments of Despair: Prince Fielder opts for vegetarian lifestyle; CC again has trouble in the postseason; First Ned Yost firing report proves untrue; Four-game party canceled by Cubs;   Geovany Soto temporarily puts Crew's wild card hopes in doubt

Others remember: "Eventually, though, reality will make itself manifest in a harsh sport that, without a salary cap, does not abide small markets for long. The Brewers called all-in for this year with Sabathia and a $90 million payroll that put them in a position where they were expected to make the playoffs, but is any of this really sustainable? Not to detract from anything just completed, because 90 victories and the wild card were certainly milestones to be cherished, but now that the standing ovations have gone quiet, you are left with the feeling that the Brewers might not pass this way again for who knows when." — Michael Hunt, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 10.06.08

If we can resign CC, the Brewers will be back in the postseason in 2009. CC and Gallardo, i like that 1-2 punch. hopefully things work out for the Crew. Go Brew Crew!

During the NFL and MLB overlap CC will be able to room with Brett in NY. Say goodbye.

I don't expect we can resign CC but one does not know for sure. Gallardo is really good and Parra/McClung/Bush can fill out rotation OK.Our hitting 'Coach' needs to be gone soon as his coaching seems to have fallen on deaf ears.....NOT all is hopeless.

with or without CC, the team should be able to contend again next year. the team has too much offensive talent not too. Parra will be fine next year. he just ran out of gas. he should have been limited to 5 innings earlier in the year when he was pitching well to keep his innings down. that said, i would love to see CC back on the team. good work BLS.

As much as I love CC, the Brewers are not going to mortgage their whole future on one guy. They have to resign alot of these younger guys and make some other free agent moves. CC will play for the Dodgers or the Angles. He is looking to have fun playing baseball, which means he isn't going to be a Yank or Met, talk about over paid failure teams.

I would try to sign CC instead of Sheets.. Sheets hasn't given the Brewers a full season since he joined the club..!! I would also fire Doug Melvin.. He wastes too much money on players who are past their prime and don't contribute enough at 'crunch time'... (Suppan, Kendall, Cameron, etc.) Not to mention mortgaging the future to 'rent' CC for half a season.. I would replace Weeks and Hall permanently and shop for an every day 3B.. There is a bright side to this season.. The Brewers won at least one play-off game, unlike the Chokago Crumbs..

i seem to remember cc pitching on short rest 3 straight games to get us into the playoffs, without the cc rental we wouldn't have made it. i'd love to see them resign cc but that's unlikely. go crew!

I'd suggest you not quote Michael Hunt - he's the biggest tool in Milwaukee.

It was fun while it lasted. I went to the game on Saturday and it was something I will remember forever. CC and Sheets are gone. Sveum and Skallen need to go. Bring in some vet coaches. Sign another starting pitcher. Find a new closer. Find a couple more vets for the field and you never know. Maybe it will be a good 2009 season as well.

This is the stupidest post I ever read! Nail in Brewers coffin? This has been nothing short of a success for them. 26 years in the playoffs. Geeeeeeeeeesh at least they won a game. How about a nail in the Cubs coffin. Geeeeeeeeeeeeeesh.

Kendall past his prime. He played very well for us this year. The others I kind of agree with. Forgot to mention Gagne though

Why can't we package Suppan, Gag me and and a player to be named later for a decent # 3 starting pitcher - I guessing that is all it will amount to be. Hall needs to take a pay cut. Hart needs to attend Little League games where these kids see their first breaking ball.Rickie "with 2 e's and a k" Weeks needs to grow up or move out. How am I doing so far Mr. Melvin? Gallardo, Parra, Bush, McClung and paycut Capuano or first AAA prospect.
