Big League Stew - MLB

It seems every time we play in Minnesota against the Twins, we love playing long extra-inning games. Our first series there we played 13 innings ending in a loss, and this last series we played a nice 16-inning game which resulted in a 11-9 victory on Friday night.

People ask what's going through your head once you start to approach that four- or five-hour mark in the game and that 13-16 inning mark.

Your body isn't really tired as you see pitchers still come in throwing around the same velocity as before. Players still make plays, steal bases, and hit home runs to win those long games. Mentally, you are ready for it to end sooner than later though.

Sometimes, though, you just get really hungry.

We have sunflower seeds, gum, and even protein bars for us at anytime throughout the game. I've eaten peanuts before and even candy bars, just because I wanted something else.  It made me think though:  If all of that is OK to eat, why wouldn't it be OK to run upstairs to the clubhouse and make a sandwich for the 14th inning? Of course that hasn't happened, but you do get very tempted to do so.

As the game goes later, your mind starts to think a little more about the length of the game when you are approaching your sixth, seventh and eighth at-bats. Those are days where you just hope you have at least one hit and hopefully a walk in those games. (Or you can do like Denard Span(notes) did and have five hits in that 16-inning game.)

I also began to think about what is going to happen when we run out of pitchers. Who would be the position player we would use in that situation? Everyone jokes on our team about how they can pitch, but no one has had to do it. I would like to get a chance to and almost did one game in high school. Brandon Inge(notes) would be a good candidate since he pitched in college and can make up pitches to get hitters out, but what if we had no other infielders left to replace him at third base, then what would happen?

It would be interesting to see, but hopefully we don't get to that point where we are playing that many innings where we will need to find out that answer.

One a final note, I would also like to thank not only my peers in baseball, but all the fans who have shown support this year, which resulted in me being named to the All-Star team for the first time in my career this week. I am excited to participate in my first All-Star Game, but I am also humbled and surprised.

Of course, the game will be much more fun if my teammate Brandon Inge, who definitely deserves an All-Star slot, joined Justin Verlander(notes), Edwin Jackson(notes) and me on the team. You can vote for Brandon in the final vote by clicking here.

Here the Question?....Tigers make the post season - YES or NO?.........I think not,my huge opinion...as always they choke in the trenches....Now, [CWS & MINN] is off -n- running now....they always play well second half of the season.....With minimal run production per/gm,I Tigers will contiunue thier losing ways.....when it all said -n - done 2009, The Tigers will be in 3rd place in the [central division] = 83-79.....what a shame, verlander/jackson is excellent, but, both of them can't carry all the load themselves....p.s; verlander has a chance to win 20games in 2009, we hope he does!.......it take the whole club to make it happen[team fort]....Congrats to Verlander/Jackson to play the All-star games in St.L!

A couple years ago I saw a Tiger (maybe Grandy) snag a hot dog/brat on the down-low during BP in Oakland and scarf it down using the glove as cover. Well-played, whomever it was.

Congrats on the All-Star pick. Should've gone in 2007, better numbers that year, but I guess getting in with slightly lower number this years makes up for the previous injustice.

Do the tigers make the playoffs??? of course, they have 2 dominate pitches, 2 allstar pitchers, 2 pitchers who can dominate ne game they go in. Also Galarraga has been struggling but hes working his way back, just look at his last 2 starts a decent one then a great one, and porcello isnt running out of gas like people say he is, teams didnt have a good game plan against him earlier in the year, and now they know what he features, knapp will have him winning games again in no time. The tigers also have a lot of power, they have the 3rd most homeruns of any trio in the american league, and the play DEFENSE, everyone knows pitching and DEFENSE win championships (atleast a postseason spot)

Kopp3553, don't get me wrong, I'm a Tigers fan, but 2 ace pitchers isn't enough to get us in if we don't start swinging the bat. I agree that pitching and defense are key, but if you're only putting up 1-3 runs a night it doesn't matter. The blasted Twins, a team almost always built around pitching and defense, are poised to make their usual second half run. Those guys almost always turn it up a notch in the second half after a slow start. Remember 2006? And second place won't cut it this year, the wildcard is coming from the East. Heck, the third place team in the East could end up with a better record than the first place team in the Central.

the central belongs to the tigers, if injuries happen thats a different story, but you are crazy if ud take any other central teams pitching staff over the tigers, al leader in K's, 5th best era in jackson, porcello and galarraga who can give u a solid 6 pretty much everytime they go out there, and FRENCYS been looking good giving them a little lefty action, the 5th spot is a lil questionable. Are defense is so strong, best catcher at throwing out runners at 40% which is ridiculous, polanco no arguing there, inge no arguing there, everett/santiago no argument there, cabrera has become a great 1st baseman, grandy in center and solid corner outfeilders. Are hitting will heat up polanco will hit 300 the second half of the season curtis will hit more doubles and trples like we r acustom too which will give cabrera more rbi oppurtunites, its an easy pick, maybe the twins could make a small run with the M&M bros but thats all they have, cuddyer is decent, and hes gunna have to hit like crazy cause those 2 wont see to many pitches if the keep hitting like the do

The Tigers neeed to aquire Halladay, then we will go all the way to World Series Champions..........Keep Thomas in Right Field even if he only hits .250 his speed, fielding, and ARM are what the Tigers need in Right Field, his batting will come around, Play him every day and Trade Off Magglio, he is way to slow and has a ruber arm.....Get Halladay and keep/Play Thomas and the Tigers Win It All..........
