Big League Stew - MLB

Our long road trip ended with a three-day series in Kansas City over the weekend. I knew that  the Royals were undergoing new renovations at their stadium last season, but now it is all upgraded and complete. After our visit, I have to say this: If you haven't been to a Royals game at Kauffman Stadium before (or even if you have), I highly recommend that you check it out this season. It's a great baseball environment.

The new upgrades give it a minor-league feel, but on a much larger scale considering the size of the stadium. The new "fountain" seats that they added in both right center and left center are a nice addition, and probably the one I really liked most. Those look like great seats and seem like a great place to sit during batting practice and the game.

During the game, I think the Royals do a great job with their events between innings. From the beginning of the game — and then pretty much during every inning — the fans were loud and screaming for something, from launched hot dogs to onfield races to t-shirt giveaways. It was cool to see the fans standing for more than just wanting the last out of an inning — or standing between innings other than the middle of the seventh.

We saw a lot of this in Anaheim as well, especially with the movie clips they put on the big screen that incorporate the Rally Monkey, which may be the best thing going in an MLB stadium these days.

I know some people would say that the noise created from the big screens and display boards around the ball park telling fans to make noise can be annoying at times, but I would much rather have noise than quiet fans not seeming to be into the game. The people who dislike baseball usually give the reason that the game is too slow or there is not enough constant action. The game doesn't have the nonstop action of, say, football or basketball, but at least being at the game should still be an enjoyable time no matter what is going on on the field. Some people have even said they had more fun during a loss than a win, simply because of all that was happening around them in the stadium.

All in all, I wouldn't say that Kansas City is my favorite stadium, but it is a great place to watch a game no matter who the opponent is. In the end, my favorite ballpark is Anaheim.

Hmmm....I can't believe that his favorite place to play isn't the Metrodome. Now THAT is a classic ballpark.

"The new upgrades give it a minor-league feel"
Might want to clarify that one, sounds like kind of a put-down.

I'm a Wrigley Field kinda girl (old school) and don't care for all the in-between-innings stuff they have at a lot of stadiums. But I have only heard good things about Kauffman, it looks pretty nice on TV, and I'd love to catch a game there someday.

Kaufman is an awesome ball park, especially w/ the renovations now. Perfect place to watch a ball game.

I went to a couple of games at Kauffman back in the late 90's (Johnny Damon was the starting center fielder). It's a great stadium, much cleaner and nicer than Dodger stadium ( I live in L.A.).

Most city dumps are cleaner and nicer than Chavez Latrine, Larry.
Of the new stadiums, AT&T (SF), Petco (SD) and PNC (PIT) are all great. Wrigley's great because of the old school feel and the atmosphere. It's also better kept up than Fenway, which is a dump (baseball atmosphere notwithstanding).
I haven't ever been to Kauffman, but I've always liked the design. Hopefully I'll see a game there someday.

New K is awesome. Had tickets on Sunday seats were in the outfield just in front of the fountains. Walked in the gates when some guys wife got sick and he stopped my and gave us his tix. Diamond club 10 rows behind homeplate. Sweet. Went to our other seats 6th inning and watched Granderson do his thing 30 feet in front of us. Guys a row up giving him hell, didn't even phase him. Nice guy

The K has some nice improvements, but they also had some serious blunders with their recent renovation. For one thing, they have already started bringing in porta-potties for big crowd games. OOPS! Also, they put in this nice restaurant that takes away most of the concourse on the main level. So, if you enter on the third-base side and have tickets on the first-base side, you find yourself going through a narrow passageway, bumping and grinding with the other fans trying to do just the opposite, and hoping that nobody mugs or gropes you.
Once you get to your seat, though, it's beautiful, and still a great bargain.

Kaufman isn't bad, I enjoyed it. Going again in May so I'll get to see the renovations myself. Still personally enjoyed the Diamond Backs stadium when it was new, and I would like to think I like the Braves, if they'd ever get rid of that silly Coke bottle.

Not to veer off subject too far, but have you ever watched football? It is anything BUT non-stop!

I love the K and can't wait to see the new improvements. I'm not sure what he meant by "The new upgrades give it a minor-league feel". I said it was in a good way, but it sounds like an insult.
Good to see KC get some love.

awesome article about the K. I have been going to games since I was a little kid; one of my first games was during the World Series.....The Truman Sports Complex ( Arrowhead and Kauffman ) is one of the best sports facilities in the US. If you haven't been to a Chiefs or Royals game, check it out!
look forward to your next column, CG......next time you are in Kansas City, you should go down to the Power and Light District or hit up some Jack Stack BBQ.....it's good times!!!!

when he was saying it has a "minor league feel," he wasn't putting down kaufman as second rate. obviously from the context, he was saying it seemed small and cozy, like a minor league ball park.
never been to kaufman. hope to some day.
    and baseball's non-action is better than football's non-action. 11 guys in a circle going over the coach's instructions? D-u-l-l.

been going to the K for over 30 years. After touring many of the newer and older ballparks, there's no better place to see a game. i still wish they would've brought the fences in alittle when they put the seats out by the water spectacular in the outfield. i just hope that someday they'll have a great team to go with a great stadium. as for curtis granderson, always enjoyed watching him play even though he's on detroit. in fact i have him as a friend on facebook. just a great all around guy and wish he'd come play for my royals

After seeing all 30 MLB stadiums I'd agree with Mr. Granderson on the K. Only a couple things I'd change with the K if they could turn the stadium a 180 degrees so you could see a little more of the valley. Second, move the Negro League Baseball Museum on the stadium grounds and you would have the number one stadium in the country. In fact by having the Negro League Museum and the K together you make the trip a destination rather than a stadium.
