Big League Stew - MLB

It doesn't take much for New York fans to get a little anxious, but lest they get comfortable with cliches like "it was only one game," here are 10 reasons to be a bit skeptical after falling behind the Phillies 1-0 in the World Series.

1. Losing Game 1 at home: Teams that win the opener have captured the entire World Series at a 62 percent clip since 1903, but winning the first serve has been a much bigger advantage in recent years. Game 1 winners have won the Fall Classic six straight times and 11 of the last 12. The 2001 and '03 Yankees both lost their openers — one on the road and one at home — en route to eventual defeat.

2. A.J. Burnett(notes) starting Game 2: Eighty million sure doesn't go as far as it used to. Burnett has struggled with his control during the postseason — well, his entire career actually — and his start in ALCS Game 5 featured a bomb of a first inning. It's entirely possible that he'll perform well tonight, but his presence doesn't inspire the type of confidence you'd usually ask from someone in his rotation spot or at his salary level.

3. CC neutralized: CC Sabathia(notes) was the Yankees' biggest trump card in the first two rounds, fueling his team to three victories that seemed almost automatic. Though he pitched well on Wednesday, Cliff Lee(notes) and the Phillies finally stepped up with an antidote and deflected the biggest bullet in New York's rotation.

4. Cliff Lee isn't going anywhere: Let's make this simple. Four postseason starts. 0.54 ERA. 30 strikeouts in 33 1/3 innings. Two more possible turns in this World Series.  Any more questions?

5. Poor Phil Hughes(notes): Though he developed into a reliable bridge to Mariano Rivera(notes) during this season, the young reliever has been shaky in his past two appearances, getting only one out while allowing three earned runs via two hits and three walks. Not exactly the time for an emerging star in the bullpen to start struggling.

6. Bottom of lineup bottoming out: The trio of Robinson Cano(notes), Melky Cabrera(notes) and Nick Swisher(notes) went 0-for-9 on Wednesday night and with the exception of Cabrera's ALCS, has been notably nonproductive this postseason. The Yankees' lineup depth could be a big advantage over Philadelphia, but unless that black hole closes up it certainly won't be.

7. Disappearing DH: After tonight's game, the series will head to Philadelphia where neither team will have the luxury of the designated hitter. For a Yankees' fan base that has become terrified of Joe Girardi's next call to the bullpen, having him manage his pitchers under National League rules has to rank as a scary thought.

8. Absent A-Rod? As I said after Game 1, there's no reason to push the panic button or get down on Alex Rodriguez(notes) after an 0-for-4, three-strikeout night. However, it's perfectly  acceptable to stress over who will replace his production in the lineup if he struggles a few games. As much as he'd like to, A-Rod can't carry the team every game.

9. Leering lefties: Coming into Wednesday night's game, Sabathia had not allowed a home run to a left-hander at the new Yankee Stadium. Chase Utley(notes) changed all that with two home runs and the prospect of having both Utley and Ryan Howard(notes) (2-for-5, two doubles) aiming for that right field fence for three more games (if necessary) has to be a frightening one.

10. Philadelphia is tough: New York fans are always going to be confident their teams can beat all comers, but I think the No. 27 dreams were halted a little bit by Game 1's realization that the Phillies are defending world champs for a reason. The king stay the king and to change that paradigm, the Yankees have to come up with an extraordinary effort above and beyond what it took to beat Minnesota and Los Angeles. Starting tonight.

A big BLS head nod to The Fightins for the facepalm screencap.

...and why did Joe G. take out CC in the 8th...why did he take out Marte...why did he take out Robertson...it seems as though he gave up after the 7th. The Yankees batting in the 8th and 9th would be a lot differnt if the score remained as 2-0 instead of 4-0 and 6-0!!!

Ummm... I'm pretty sure the Yankees do not have an advantage in the depth department... Both teams have equally dangerous line-ups... throw away the reg-season stats... Howard is quickly becoming one of the best players in baseball... not just because of his home-runs... They play better defence as well... Yankees will probably have to beat Lee at least once... I don't think they can get it done

there are only 2 reasons to worry:
    1. The Phillies are good. The Yankees and fans know this, it's not a real shocker. People seem to think Yankee fans expect a sweep every time. We arent stupid. I think the Phils are jus as good. In fact the two teams are eerily similar.
    2. Yankees bullpen, aside from Rivera, has been atrocious. That's a reason to worry. We need starters 7 and then Rivera 2, it's bad.
On a side note, why are people so down on Burnett. He's inconsistent, so are most pitchers. In the playoffs he's had 2 GREAT games (wild sure, but few hits and runs). Then he had the real bad game and suddenly,. he's been bad all playoffs. I dont get it. He was treated that way during the season too. he had some great games as expected, a few horrible ones. That's how he's always been, so his ERA ends around 4. Sure he's not worth $80 mil, but who is? Without him where would the Yankees be? They needed him to replace Mussina, and he has.

Joseph M is right, you cant buy wins. The Yankees dont try to buy wins. That's just a the only comment a Yankee hater can come up with. They use their money to keep their top players and bring in free agents they need (Yanks lost Mussina and overpaid Giambi, brought in Sabath/Burnett and Texeria, that's running a good team). I agree it'd be nice if all teams did the same (some can but dont, some cant), but trust me, buying a team doesnt work. Most of the playoff teams spend a lot of money too, so it's not as if the Yankss are doing something drastically different.

there you go a typical yankee fan. yankeesfan it's not going to be that easy winning the next 3 games. The Phillies are going to win the world series because Charlie Manuel knows how to manage a bullpen, AJ Burnett sucks, and the Yankees have no bridge to Mariano Rivera. The Yankees will be lucky to send this series to 6

Let's not overreact. Yes the mighty Yankees lost, but they lost to a brilliant Cliff Lee, anybody would have lost. Dd Girardi gave up after the 7th? I think he did, and I think he was right. In fact where it not for Rollins' outrageous throw the Yankees would have scored exactly NO runs, that is actually 2 less than needed to balance what a good Sabathia allowed the Phillies to score. I do not know if the Yankees will rebound, if Pedro is great , then the Phillies could easily be on the way to ultimate victory, otherwise everything is open!

IS IT NOT OBVIOUS THAT THE PHILLIES ARE A BETTER TEAM? YANKEES ARE OVERRATED, OVERPAID, AND YANKEE FANS ARE THE WORST IN THE GAME, im gonna enjoy watching AJ get shelled and A-Rod and overpaid Teixera get owned by Pedro! bring out the brooms! phillies in 4.. they will win EVERY game in this series.

Mikez, everyone knows the Yanks payroll is highest. But anything over 100 mil is high. All of the playoff teams except the Twins and Rockies have high payrolls. Yankees are higher why, because besides the free agents, they kept Rivera, Posada, Jeter, Cano, ARod (trade, not bought) rather than let them go like small market teams need to do. Not disputing difference between top and bottom teams, but the Yanks and Phils and most playoff teams are very similar. What's the difference if the Yanks pay ARod and Jeter more than the Phillies pay Howard and Utley. They are both stars, doesnt matter if the Yanks paid more. That was my point. The Yankees didnt buy a team. They did spend money to add to their team, like most other teams who can do. I know I cant win the argument, but no matter what the Yanks spend you cant buy a championship. if that was true the Yanks would win every year just because they have the highest payroll, right? The reason the Yanks havent won lately is a lack of good farm players, which in turn "encourages" them to bring in more free agents, which doesnt make for a good team, and is the reason the Yanks dont win anymore.
