This Rays' 'sailboat' stadium looks pretty cool

Don't adjust your monitors, people. Pictured above is a rendering of the Rays' proposed $450 million waterfront stadium in St. Petersburg. The photos of this plan have been available for some time, but the team just released this image yesterday, which features the park with the roof in the "closed" position. As you can tell from the photo, translucence is king. And after seeing those Lindsay Lohan photos in New York magazine, I have to ask: Who doesn't love translucence?

The roof is supposed to resemble a sail and I suppose it does. But it also kinda looks like a kids' pillow fort. Not to mention that the long post in the outfield originally reminded me of Montreal's Olympic Stadium.

Still, I really like this plan, which could be completed as early as 2012. It'll be unique to the Bay area and it's obvious that anything has to be better than Tropicana Field. The sad truth is that until the Rays and Marlins get new stadiums, I'll never attempt to hit every ballpark in the bigs.

This design would make the Florida swing worth it, though.

Now if only they could figure out how to equip it with A/C.

UPDATE: Getting plenty of e-mails and comments about how it looks like a spaceship or jet taking off. Can't say I disagree.

Way Cool!! Looks like a jet taking off. One worry. Ever been here in a bad rainstorm? Wind and rain travels sideways. OOPS! More importantly.....With women like Jessica Alba and Katherine Heigle around who even bothers to look at Lindsay whatshername??

The entire design is designed to cool down the stadium. There is also a likelihood of the water providing a cooling effect. In addition, since most games will be at night, the weather will not be as bad as it would be during the day. I can not say anything about the rain.
But really, it's a great design I think. I live here in Tampa and I believe it would be great and be a bit more accessible.

Ever heard of Hurricanes, they are a Norm down there right. So one good storm and it is bye-bye baby right. Other than that it is a great concept hopefully the Marlins get it. It is what the city needs and for the team.

It seems like there going to have the same problem they have now with the roof or cover on the field. The balls are hit into the catwalks and lights in the dome, and it takes away from way a real game should be played. The sail's lowest point if you notice will be right above the infield, where the highest popups are hit. I think they failed to think this out. There should have been another 2 towers behind homeplate to the made the same shape there going for i nthe picture above, expect it would have raised the sail another 100 ft in the air or more. Then There's the prob with stong winds and ripping the sail or replacing the sail. I wonder how they'll go about that? Hmm
