Armed with the giant $105 million contract extension he signed last week, Milwaukee Brewers star Ryan Braun(notes) had to figure that he'd see an increase in the already-large number of marriage proposals he gets from female fans.
But who knew one woman would try to separate herself from the posterboard-toting pack at Miller Park by printing her cell phone number above her suggestion? And yet that actually happened on Friday night as the fräulein above made sure to place all 10 of her digits on her very earnest offer.
You probably know where this bad idea jeans scenario is going, of course. The fan who said her name was Robin and her sign appeared on FOX Sports Wisconsin, and hilarity ensued as fans from Waukesha to Wauwatosa entertained themselves by flooding her voicemail inbox.
Kurt Allen of Midwest Sports Fans has some play-by-play of what followed:
The rest of the half-inning was pure raw comedy, with Braun's would-be lady wondering why her phone was ringing off the hook with calls and texts and why field reporter Telly Hughes would possibly want to interview her.
'It seemed like a good idea," she said in the ensuing interview.
I do have to give the girl credit for hanging tough in the midst of extreme embarrassment, but the old Southwest Airlines 'Want To Get Away??' campaign had to be an option at that point.
When asked by Hughes when she might turn her phone back on — the woman replied, "Maybe next week when I get back to school."
The great twist in the story is that Braun — who has a girlfriend — got wind of the sign after the game and actually tried to call Robin's phone (video here). Alas, her voicemail box was full and Braun couldn't even leave a message with an answer to the proposal.
"I guess it wasn't meant to be," said the reigning NL Player of the Week.
Braun can certainly keep trying, though, because an attempt to call the number on Monday afternoon revealed that the fan hadn't yet switched to a new one (which is why we've placed the old ball-and-glove logo over the last four digits).
