David Roth vowed he would not miss another chance to watch his son pitch for South Carolina at the College World Series if the Gamecocks returned to Omaha after winning the national championship in 2010.
But when his son's team made it back, David Roth found himself in a tough spot. Unable to get personal time off from work, he needed to make a decision.
Michael Roth announced it on Twitter on Saturday:
How's this for dedication? My dad had to quit his job to make it out to Omaha. Couldn't get here last year. #novacationdays
As decisions go, this one seems as touching as it is impulsive. David Roth, a 57-year-old college graduate, really had quit his job selling Volkswagens and Audis in Greenville, S.C.
He was unemployed but in the stands at TD Ameritrade Park on Sunday, watching his son pitch 7 1/3 innings in a 5-4 victory for South Carolina against Texas A&M.
"Obviously, it was pretty special considering it was Father's Day yesterday," [Michael Roth] said Monday. "I'm glad that he's here. It's been pretty cool having my family here. [...]
"My dad's been a huge inspiration for baseball for me," he said. "It's definitely nice to have him out here."
Definitely nice, yes. But how many parents out there would make, or could even entertain making, the same call?

Michael Roth has not allowed an earned run in 37 1/3 innings for South Carolina, and his ERA for the season is 0.97. As a result of his success, the Cleveland Indians made him a 31st-round pick in the June draft. Roth is unsigned so far, but even if he signs, he doesn't get many guarantees professionally. His career could be over quickly. It could be over this week.
And that's probably where a lot of his father's motivation comes from.
Most players reach this point in their baseball career only with the help of one or both parents making sacrifices along the way. But these sacrifices usually take the form of long car rides, expensive camps and equipment, and time. And it all might require a parent getting a second job to make it all come together.
But actually quitting a job? In this economy? Noble, sure. Maybe not as noble as donating a kidney or bone marrow, but good luck getting a transplant if you don't have a job and health insurance to pay for it.
What David Roth did was risky, even reckless — depending on many unknown (to us) financial factors for the Roths. But even the gesture — "I have quit my job to watch my son pitch in the College World Series" — it boggles the mind. It's awesome.
Is he worried about his dad getting another job?
"No, he'll be OK," Michael Roth said. "Gamecock Nation will help us out."
Better make sure South Carolina wins again, just in case.

While I admire a person putting their family ahead of other things, remember this is a car sales job. If he is any good he will be able to get other opportunities and perhaps have some benefit from all the publicity. Foolish boss could have gotten the free publicity by doing something else.
if you want to look up the dealership, its steve white volkswagen audi in greenville sc
He knew his son would make millions in 2-3 years. But yeah...just call in sick.
"Definitely nice, yes. But how many parents out there would make, or could even entertain making, the same call?"
That is because the corporations have purchased your politicians and moved all your jobs out of the USA. You have let your employers become your slave masters.
Funny how many of you give in to your employers. The business of selling cars is so important that a few days would've caused the company some pain? Grow a pair people.
yes 1 what happen to his vacation days and 2 must be more to not letting him off lack of no car sales 3 @#$% fan cry about everything 4 is his boss a Clemson fan
If the guy needed the job & will be in bad shape financialy because of quiting he was a jerk for quiting. Little kids want thier parents to watch thier every move (mommy watch this) grown men are independent & do not want help or to be cheered on if it causes damage for the person doing the cheering.
It is not practical for an employer to cater to every whim of its workers. If they did they would not survive & a lot more people would be out of a job.
If this guy really wanted the time off he most likely did not take the responsibility to get it off i.e., better plan his vacation time, pay someone else to do his job or work for free on days off. I have worked @ jobs in the past where workers would pay several days wages to another worker to get the day off plus the worker filling in would get paid by the company.
The employer was wise to get rid of someone that was not responsible. If the worker was a real asset to the company he would not have lost his job & it is his responsibility to make himself valuable.
Just goes to show you that all that matters to businesses today is to make money, to hell with family and values. Shame on his boss or bosses for not giving him the day or two off, or trying to get someone to fill in for him. I will never bye an Audi or Volkswagon. Jerks. Good on you dad, being there for your children has to be number 1.
My husband did the same thing many years ago when his son was playing for a travel team in Orlando. His employer would not let him off, so he quit. This caused many years of headache and hardship for our family. It was a selfish move on his part, and taught his son nothing other than he is more important than a commitment to a job and taking care of the rest of the family. This college aged grown man should not be so proud of this move by his dad. Commitment comes in lots of forms, and we as a society are raising self-important brats!!!! Life happens, and we don't always get what we want. It sucks, but why should this man throw away a career because of his son's interests. His son is a grown-up!
His son, being a baseball player, makes a lot of money. Can't he give some to his father, or just plain support him!
really hate to be the buzzkill in this very heartwarming story but something tells me the father had wanted to quit his job even before this. Its a very kind gesture but think about it.. his job wasnt all that great to begin with and to be honest had i worked at a crappy place that i wanted to leave and heard i had the choice to watch my son play baseball or keep my job. depending on my financial situation of course but i think i might choose to see my son play. yes a job is a job but perhaps the dad was in a position to do so. lovely story eitheir way so props to the dad!
He should have just called in sick
Anyone know where I can get a Gucci or Prada handbag? Perhaps a polo shirt?
Also, this article was interesting, when I read it days ago....way to stay current Yahoo!
way to go :)) we all need priorities and family must come first!!! way to stick it to the man!they don't care about YOUR FAMILY just the bottom line.Blood Sucking vermins
You see it as reckless David. I see it as beautiful. And please, Pops is a car salesman....If I owned a car dealership I would be begging him to work for me. Who WOULDN'T want to buy their car from him? :0)
Why was he out of vacation days! Didn't he think his son's team was good enough to make it back to the World Series? If he made that vow, then he should have scheduled those days off in advance. It's his own fault.
hi sara i read your comment and i want to be a friend
I have a funny feeling the name of the manager at this dealership is Trend Trader.
And you have it all wrong.
He wasn't asking to go to EVERY game.
He wasn't asking for the company to close its doors for a week.
He WAS providing for his family.
His son is pitching in the COLLEGE WORLD SERIES. Not just another game.
He wanted a day off. Big freakin deal.
What? If he's not there, the company shuts down? They close their doors? They go bankrupt, all because this one guy isn't there for a day?
GIVE ME A BREAK!!!
Having a job does NOT mean they OWN YOU!!!
And for all of you others ripping on him for wanting to see this AWESOME, and proud event take place, either don't have kids, or you have a kid whose biggest accomplishment was learning to ride a bike, in which you had no part of teaching them. It was the neighbors dad that showed him. You were too busy with your AWESOMELY, FABULOUS job. And did not want to ruin your chance at a perfect attendance pin for the 6th year in a row.
Oh, and don't forget about the free doughnut you got for working the Saturday of your kids birthday.
Bravo....you da man!!
You deserve the dedicated employee parking spot in the FRONT ROW BABY!!!!
FACT IS: If you miss the BIGGEST DAY of your kids entire life, to go earn a days pay, I feel sorry for your kid. And I DONT CARE HOW MUCH YOU MADE THAT DAY!!!
You lost, and your an idiot.
He quit his job because he couldn't get the time off from his work ; what kind of employer was he working for ? The name of his employer should be disclosed - talk about negative image for the company.
With the fame he has gotten as a result of his actions and the media coverage, something tells me he will not be unemployed for very long.
Good luck.
A good father makes sure he can provide food, shelter, medical care and other NECESSITIES for his family before going to a stupid game.
Get real people. Businesses don't revolve around childrens' sporting events or parents' "needs" to go to them.
I learned a valuable lessen many years ago....I was asked to come in on one of my days off! I remember I had big plans when I told the boss "NO" Guess what he asked me? He asked me; If I mentioned I wouldn't be able to work on a few of my days off when I filled out my job application? He was spot on! I never complained again...Sometimes you need to toughen up. Look at our military men throughout the years they have given their lives and missed so much more than many of could ever imagine! One more thing this boss was the best. Another co worker called in sick with a soar throat the boss replied that it was alright he didn't hire him to sing and he would see him soon! "Charlie" had learned from the best and his work ethics were No different than what he expected his employees to have been...
Perhaps the father should have never worked a day in his life so he could be there for every moment of his child's life...now that would be truly praiseworthy! he could witness every glorious sneeze that came from this amazing child. Then his child would know that the entire universe revolves around him. I'm tired of the self esteem generation.
He's an idiot!
