Big League Stew - MLB

Since no one seems to have any good ideas about solving these weather shenanigans that have extended our stay in Philadelphia for at least another day, I thought I'd just go ahead and propose an unconventional idea of my own.

Let's load the Rays and Phillies on the next plane to O'Hare and finish Game 5 at Chicago's Wrigley Field.

Wait, wait. Hear me out here.

According to Yahoo! Weather, it's a little bit chilly and cloudy in the Windy City, but it's at least it's not raining.

(Meanwhile, I swear I just saw Kevin Costner and Dennis Hopper floating and fighting their way down Philly's I-95 on a couple of junk battleships.)

I know what you're saying — "'Duk, you just want to get back to Chicago so that you can walk to work, sleep in your own bed and eat things that don't involve a heavy layer of cheese whiz."

You'd be right, of course. Still, the idea stands on other merits unrelated to yours truly.

For one, the Phillies will get the support of a Cubs fanbase that assumed there would be baseball still going on at Wrigley Field in late October. Hungry to see a championship won in front of dead ivy, they'd be eager to offer at least 3 1/2 innings of support for a franchise that might be suffering even longer than the Cubs if it weren't for Tug McGraw striking out Willie Wilson.

In the same vein, baseball and Fox would get a jolt in the ratings for viewers flipping through the channels and believing for a moment that the Cubs somehow did make the World Series. For an even bigger blockbuster, they can dress the Phillies up in Cubs pinstripes and the Rays in Boston's away unis. (And, really, how would that be any harder of a slap to Philly and Tampa Bay fans than starting the games when everyone on the East Coast is starting to think about bed time?)

Finally, Commissioner Selig could add a strange-relocation bookend to having the Astros play up in Milwaukee even when there were other, more logical locations available.

OK, so I suppose none of this would be fair to the Rays, especially since they were already told there was no room at the inn in Philadelphia and have a fanbase that's getting jobbed by the books in Vegas.

Then again, as one commenter accurately pointed out this morning, I hate the Rays because I had a disappointing romantic experience while I was on vacation and am jealous I don't live there. So screw 'em. We'll see Joe and his boys in the Chi.

Have a crazy idea of where to relocate the end of Game 5? Let's hear it.

What's left of Shea Stadium. There's no more scoreboard, restrooms, concession stands or seats, but hey, it's still standing, sorta.

    Move it to Alaska.
Sure, it might be a little cold today, but hell with the Fudd's it shouldn't matter. I would think literally half the state would turn out, and not to mention the game could be started at 3 local time and it'd be dark enough for the "night game" feel Fox seems to want.

Why not San Diego? It's like 80 degrees here right now. And Petco would offer a great pitching scenario for both teams. In a perfect world, the World Series is played under sunny skies, in warm weather. Maybe the commisioner will figure that out when this years WS ends in November.

Move it to Tokyo. There's a huge fan base in Japan, there's Akinori Iwamura, and you'll probably sell out. Plus, with the global location, it starts at 6 in the morning, and FOX gets all the ratings of your local news outlet (this actually may be an improvement). Plus, the kids can decide: Cartoons, or Baseball?

Well considering both teams are on the east coast, Phillies in the North, and the Rays in the south, why not play game 5 right in the middle at Turner Field in Atlanta? The weather is clear all week...Just an idea. Playing somewhere else completely takes out the home field advantage, which really isn't fair for the phillies even though they are up by two games and I hate them.

why dont we just move it to the Staples Center? C'mon people they need to play in Phily because this is the World Series, not just some regular season game. Its already almost half over. There is no point in moving it to another city because the Phillies need their home stadium respected. think of it like this, if game 5 does get moved to Zimbabwe, then the Phillies and Rays would still need to fly back to Florida. So I say just wait it out another day until they resume play. and besides judging by the low rating, many people aren't even watching the games...... so dont start packing your bags to Spain to go watch Game 5 because its not happening :)

Sorry, but the Cubs and/or Wrigley Field shouldnt be mentioned until next Spring (or at least until after the World Series). Face it..they lost. Yahoo! sports writers need some better stories.

Milwaukee.....Miller Park always hosts games when the weather conditions force teams to relocate.
    Either there or Toronto's Skydome.

So, if the Beers beat Detroit and Denver beats Atlanta in the American Southwestern Division East Northern, then Milwaukee goes to the Denslow Cup, unless Baltimore can upset Buffalo and Charlotte ties Toronto, then Oakland would play LA and Pittsburgh in a blind choice round robin. And if no clear winner emerges from all of this, a two-man sack race will be held on consecutive Sundays until a champion can be crowned.

Is the World Series still going on? Hmmm, I'm a baseball fan, I thought the season ended a couple of weeks ago. Then again I love on the east coast and don't watch tv after 11pm so I don't even get to see the first pitch. Get it over with already!

Why not leave it where it is? Philly fans are some of the most dedicated in sports.Remember they have lost more than any one else in history. It would be wrong to rob the fans of the chance to see thier team clinch it in front of them.

Why not play the game at Olympic Stadium (in Montreal)? That way, the World Series than No One Cared About could be played in front of thousands of empty seats! Fitting, no?

I say call it a season, Let the teams go home and we'll pick up where we left off somewhere in spring training... It's only proper that if we're going to let Bud Selig ruin baseball that we help him do it right. He!!, lets start next season off and halfway through it have the Rays play the Phils in a 3 1/2 inning game that starts at 2am and ends at 4am in a sandlot on the outskirts of Jersey. Whoever wins gets homefield advantage it what we'll now call "Bud Seligs Really Swell Bat & Ball Game Challenge" If we're going to F*&$ up americas past time... LETS DO IT RIGHT!!
