Big League Stew - MLB

First we paid for the AIG people to keep living the life in those luxury hotels.

Then we were asked by auto execs to start bankrolling their private jet habit.

Now it looks like we're going to be footing the bill as Mets GM Omar Minaya tries to fix his awful bullpen by going after Francisco Rodriguez or Trevor Hoffman.

Yes, as strange as it might seem, the Mets are truly now America's team — at least in a financial sense of the term — as a result of the news that the U.S. government is helping Citigroup with a $20 billion bailout.

Despite a toilet stock price and its plans to axe 53,000 people from its payrolls, Citigroup says it can't — and won't — attempt to back out of its 20-year, $400 million naming rights deal for the Mets' new ballpark.

Whether we're Mets fans or not, that leaves us on the hook to float the Mets $20 mil for campaigns that inevitably end in a September collapse.

From CNBC's Darren Rovell:

"You know, those (naming rights) decisions were made in a different time and a different place and we have a legal and binding agreement around that and so I never heard it discussed," Citi's CFO Gary Crittenden told Erin Burnett on our "Squawk on the Street" this morning. "I don't think it's an issue."

Look at the bright side, though. While we don't get any perks from hotel stays or corporate jet travel, at least this expense we're getting stuck with might have some residual enjoyment. As such, I'm making the suggestion that each of us get to rename the stadium for a day apiece over the next 20 years.

What would you rename Citi Field?

I wanted to see an American flag plastered over Manchester United's kits after the government took control of AIG, but alas.
BTW, there is no guarantee the $20 goes towards payroll, or we'd have seen the Mets spend like drunken sailors already. The Wilpons are pocketing that.
I say we should call it like it is and go with DIZNEE PARK, cause it's just as soulless as every other new ballpark, including CBP, new Busch, etc.
    Or Ebbets Field Jr.

Obama's Playground, but be careful. He may want to rip out the infield and put in a basketball court.

BTW, if Omar signs the washed up Hoffman, he's gonna get a call from the FBI.

Instead of naming it for a day can we each just take turns pi$$ing on it?

How about Summer Field? You know, because Mets baseball and summer are two things that end in September.

I think they should go with the classic "Memorial Stadium." Then they can put a monument park a la Yankee Stadium in the outfield. Except instead of player's names on the plaques, they can have the names of failed financial houses.

They should combine the old stadium name with the corporate name and thus be known as [profane]I Field.......
