Big League Stew - MLB

This morning, a blog I had previously never heard of — MLB News Online — posted an item saying that Barry Bonds and the Yankees were close to a deal and that it was "anticipated forthwith."

I didn't put much stock into the site's "confidential clubhouse source" and that was before my Y! Sports colleague Tim Brown backed up my hunch with good evidence.

While sniffing out the report's validity (or lack thereof), Brown was told by Bonds' agent Jeff Borris that the rumor was "not true."

Furthermore, it appears that the league remains united in turning its back to the Home Run King.

"I’m not in negotiations with the Yankees," Borris told Yahoo! Sports. "I’m not in negotiations with anybody.”

But while the Yankees might not be interested in bringing Bonds and creating a circus in the Bronx Zoo, a high-level Yankees source told Brown that signing Richie Sexson, who was released by the Mariners last week, was imminent. ESPN's Buster Olney is reporting that Sexson-to-the-Yankees is a done deal, so it appears that Bonds remains free to be second half rumor-fodder for at least a little while longer.

Might it be time to fire up The Barry Bonds Job Watch series again?

Will ANY team pursue Bonds in the second half?

"Forthwith" is the word of the day, as in, "Sexson's career resurgence will begin forthwith."

Sexxxson joins the illustrious list of other recent Yankee scrap heap pickups that includes Bubba Crosby, Aaron Guiel, Craig Wilson, etc.

Sexson is a never was, Bonds was still one of the best players in the league last year. And to think the Yankees could have signed Bonds for less than Sexson.

I hope the Yankees get Sexton. Another bat that swings and misses a lot. Bonds would have been great. Throw a cancer like him into the locker room to divide them up. Maybe they could get Sammy Sosa to cme play as well. Go yankees keep picking up the scabs that no one else wants. If seattle dumps you what does that say about your play?!

Richie Sexson couldn't handle the pressure of hitting in front of SEATTLE fans, possibly the nicest fans in baseball. How do you think he will handle Bronx BooBirds after his first 3 K game.

Why on earth would the Yanks want a player that the crappiest team in the entire league just released because he couldn't cut it even there?

Reggie and Bonds, pretty much the same. who cares if the Yankees get Bonds, they'll still be the most hated team in the league/sports...might as well get a championship and be hated.

cousy: that goes to show you how rascist MLB is, Bonds is banned why??? Because he used Roids??? yet some one like giambi admitted to it and he is still out there getting paid and getting praise friom the media...if Mark Mcgwire came out of retirment and offered to play for league minimum every team would line up to have him play, yet bonds who had 20+HR's and an aboove 265 BA. is shunned with no offers??? C'mon its not rocket science

Baseball is the only Holier-than-thou sport that is STUPID enough not sign a player like Bonds (Guys like Dennis Rodman or Pac Man Jones would never have trouble finding work).
It's entertainment folks! And cancer or not, Bonds got on base more often than ANYONE IN MLB, and at the age of 42, 43, also hit 26 and 28 home runs the last two years while only playing around 125 games a year (yes he was also tested for roids every 6 weeks). When does NFL training camp start again??

the colluding yanks will get what they deserve with this signing. You sign a hack who's barely hitting .200 over one of the most productive players in MLB LAST SEASON... enjoy missing the playoffs hank, lets hear your arrogant @$$ then...disgusting

If Bonds is willing to play for the league minimum why not? who wouldn't want a player with his abilities and transcript at the bargain price of league minimum.

It looks like a good move by the Yanks. While he hit just .218 with the Mariners, Sexson's split stats are revealing. He was hitting .340 against lefties and a mere .178 against righties. This sure sounds like a platoon at first with Sexson batting against lefties with either Giambi and Betemit hitting against righties. How is Sexson defensively?

this is by far a bad signing. he is not going to play the outfield and we already have dh's so they did it for the money. it would have been far far better to sign kenny lofton for a couple of mil.

It's a shame that MLB is in a conspiracy not to hire Barry Bonds. if he took Steroids or not, MLB knew about years before it all became public and MLB made TONS of money off of guys like BONDS, MCGUIRE, SOSA, PALMERO, CONsECO. MLB knew all about the steroids, no question about that. now that they are older and out of baseball they want to destroy these athletes. same like they are doing to Clemons, he retires and all the dirt comes out. MLB is corrupt from the TOP on down to the umpires. MLB is all about money. Especially when they names this IDIOT president of MLB, what a conflict on interest is that. an owner of a team president of MLB. what a joke. it's no wonder I cannot stand to watch more then 3 innings of a game I grew up loving. playing in 3 leagues every summer to hate the game.

Sexson to the Yankees....hmm, well at least you have a new ballpark to look forward to. Actually, NY fans have another thing to look forward to from Sexson, it's LOB (runners left on base)...enjoy keeping track of that number every game...unless Giardi bats Sexson after their next pick-up..Andruw Jones. Let the good times roll!

Take it from a diehard Ms fan: Sexson is gonna rock. It's scientific. Here's the formula: take any player who was at one point in their career decent; put up some good numbers, hit for average, hit for power, drove in some runs, pitched really awesome. The Ms pay WAY more than they are worth to acquire them. THey come to Seattle and SUCK. Notice I used caps. The Ms get rid of them for a steal or nothing in some cases, then have have this HUGE resurgency and they rock...
Here are some examples: Segui, Olerud (he had like one good season), Cirrillo, Aurillia, Olivo, Matt Thornton, Pineiro, Meche, Villone, Franklin, Marte, Podsednik.
Don't even get me started about the players that were awesome and we just let them go cause they weren't in the plans.
Yankee fans. Watch, Sexson will blast like 20 dingers for you in the next two months. If he doesn't it's because something sapped all of the talent out of him here in Seattle. This place is like kryptonite for ballplayers.
