NEW YORK — The New York Post photographer wore the hesitant look of a man who normally wouldn't be doing something like this were it not for the fact he worked for a tabloid newspaper and his boss would fire him if he did not. And so there he stood silently during several questions about Jimmy Rollins' guarantee, through a couple on Charlie Manuel and even through a couple on the very newspaper he was holding in his hand.

Finally, there was a lull in the questioning of Phillies outfielder Shane Victorino(notes) and the photog could not put it off any longer. Raising his camera in one hand and the cover with the picture of Victorino dressed as a cheerleader with the other, he spit out a quick request that sounded both sheepish and prematurely regretful.

"Shane, could you ..?"

"No, I'm not holding that up, bro."

"Okay."

Victorino immediately turned his attention elsewhere. The photographer walked away.

At least he could tell his boss that he tried.

There are many ways to tell that a World Series is being held in New York — and not, say, St. Petersburg, Fla. — and one of them is to simply look at the press coverage in that town. On Tuesday morning, bundles of the New York Post hit the city streets with the following sarcastic headline: "GOTHAM TREMBLES: The Frillies are coming to town!" The cover was bolstered by a photo of Victorino's torso melded onto the legs of a high school cheerleader and an accompanying article detailing why New York is better than Philly. (Actually, it was more about why Philly and its fans are "second-rate" and took three reporters to put together, which is a sad reflection on the NY Post.)

For the most part, Victorino was a good sport about his starring role on NYC news racks. He said someone alerted him to the newspaper via text message, but said he didn't understand why he and not one of the bigger stars was targeted as the main villain. He also made a few cracks about the cheerleader's legs.

Eventually, though, the center fielder tired of the newspaper questions as much as he tired of questions that started with "about what Jimmy said ..."

After the photographer had left, Victorino looked down at a copy of the paper and finally showed that it bothered him a bit, labeling the departed photographer a "clown."

"Get these out of here," he said.

Here's a video clip of Victorino,in happier times, talking about the NY Post cover:

In defense of us sane New Yorkers, only idiots read the Post. It really is a third rate tabloid disguised as a newspaper.

it's going to get a lot uglier when the Phils take the Yankees out in 4 or 5. Defending WFCs and soon to be back to back WFCs.

Shane better not let that bother him, that is NY press at its normal best. The series should make for good baseball. The yankees seem to have developed a team spirit that has been missing in the past. And philly has been there recently and should be up for it. The first game pitching should be awsome. I don't like the yankees because they are in my teams division, my team is Baltimore, and I realize that baltimore will never be able to compete with NY on a consistant basis. The yankees do it by the rules, and every other owner and team has the same rules that NY but not the money. I cant fault NY for being succesful. I still hate them damn yankees.

Pedroia, Youkolis, Ellsbury, Lester, Papelbom... I'd say thats pretty good talent development. But nobody can top the Phils in this category.... Utley, Rollins, Howard, Hamels, Victorino (kind of), Chooch

I heard that he was just upset beause he wasn't wearing high heels in the picture. Just typical writers....not real Yankee fans. All of these stupid articles even make us Yankee fans annoyed at the press. It's ridiculous. How about some real baseball articles?

johnny blue do not even bring up the name chambelain, the kid is a bum, nothing more than a thrower. yeah alright youve got some yankees left over from the good team, but this team was clearly bought. why are the yankees in the world series? because they bought cc, aj, tex, a-rod, damon. this isnt years of hard work of scouting and development coming to fruition, its years worth of millions spent.
I commend the phillies as a top notch organization for how they run there team. the majority of this team was built from the ground up, 5 of their 8 starters are home grown, and they have done a tremendous scouting job to fill the holes with pieces acquired by trade, or picking up a player who was left for dead like jayson werth.

I feel sorry for the people of New York. The Yankees are a pretty good team but the post must not have any faith in them. Why else would the paper try to make fun of the Phillies. Any its going to be the Phillies in 5. And as for the guy who made the comment about Shane being upset about not wearing heels, I've seen Jeter in a dress. He's no beauty either.

With retro uniforms and all kind of tribute badges - why not every game 3 of the World Series played in drag? Give them all a Manny pregnancy hormone shot the day of the game.

About the "bought players". They are all paid for moron. Phillies players don't play for free. Home grown? How many are from Philly? How many are even from the US? All the owners are rich, Steinbrenners just spend their money on their team. I think every player, no matter what they say would be on the next plane to NY if they got called. Everybody grows up wanting to playfor the Yankees.

funny ad. wont be so funny when the philies win this series.i dont really hate new york or new yorkers even though being from philly im supposed to. and to number 22. i think what they meant by home grown, is from the phillies farm system, not free agents. i dont look at it like the yankees "bought" a team. i look at it as the yankees farm system must be the worst in baseball. it has to be when your team is made up of mostly free agents. you'd have to go back to when gas was under a dollar per gallon to find a good yankee player/players( jeter, petite) the phillies and yankees do things differently. the yankees have stayed pretty much on top mainly through free agents. thats their way of staying competitive. im not mad at them. the phillies have gotten competitve through the players they brought up in their farm system( rollins, utley, howard, ruiz, ) the yankees best players are in their mid to late 30's. the phillies best players havent turned 30 yet( except for rollins) which way is or will be more successful? who knows. what i do know is that my phillies will win in 5 games!
